My Thoughts:

Like many people out there, I have had dental insecurities for many years. Growing up, I have seen countless dentists and orthodontists about ways to improve my smile. Some would recommend braces for six months to even three years at one point. Others said my teeth were great and a couple small procedures or veneers would fix them, but they were very pricey and braces would be off the table if I ever did want them. As I got older and decided to go to college, I did not have the time or extra expenses to invest in the process of fixing my smile, yet I still dreamed of my perfect , whiter and more professional looking smile being a reality someday.

My Smile before Instasmile.

My biggest insecurities with my smile had to do with the spacing between my two front teeth. I also had a small fang tooth at the top, a generational tooth passed down to many of us that didn't match the other side. When I heard of Instasmile's clip in veneers via social media, I knew I needed to check out the company. With graduate school coming my way in the next couple of years, it seemed like the best time to look into improving my smile.

I was thrilled to be able to review Instasmile. I placed my order for the upper and lower sets in Classic A1 through the phone and the customer service team explained that first, an impressions kit would be sent to my home. Once received, I could make a webcam appointment, and they would walk me through it. The impression process was a lot easier than expected. Included in my kit was the putty to mix and the trays to take the impressions. The customer service representative walked me through each step from mixing the putty to holding the trays for as long as needed. Once the impressions were approved they were sent off in the box included for the free re-delivery to Instasmile. Once my impressions were received, an email was sent to me with the expected shipping date of my completed veneers.

My Smile after Instasmile.

Once my veneers arrived I was shocked at how beautiful the coloring was and how perfectly shaped they were to my teeth. They were packed safely with an included case with a mirror inside for easy storage after use. I put them in and they fit with no problems. It was amazing to see myself with a new smile for the first time. It was such a special moment! Immediately I began showing them off to family and friends and they too were thrilled with my results.

The only side affects I have had thus far is minor pain at the bottom of my teeth and a small lisp for the first couple of days I used Instasmile. The lisp is slight and lasts a couple of minutes until my mouth begins to adjust to having my teeth straight. The most common questions people have asked me so far is if I can eat and drink with them and the answer is yes! I have already done both and my teeth look perfect without any staining. It takes a little getting used to at first because like with talking, you are learning how to move your mouth and tongue around the veneers. Once you find your rhythm, you'll be good to go!

My smile hasn't been more beautiful since Instasmile! I truly can't recommend them enough. If you are someone interested in improving the color, appearance, or your overall confidence in your smile, check out the links in this review to the Instasmile website. Their dedication to customer service is wonderful, and the process is so much smoother, less time consuming, and more affordable than the traditional way of veneers or braces. I'm so grateful to the Instasmile team for assisting me through this process and I know you will be too!

Rethink your resolutions this holiday season

As holiday season begins, you may be spending more time thinking about what dish you should prepare for the next family gathering or crossing people off your holiday shopping list. But the holidays are also a time to begin “rethinking your resolutions.” The average person gains 7 to 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas – making it much harder to achieve those healthy living resolutions, such as losing weight, once January 1 rolls around.

To help you manage your goals for 2018, Great Expressions Dental Centers (GEDC), a leading dental service organization, wants you to consider your New Year’s resolutions well before it’s time to act on them. In order to do so, they have put together tips on how to “rethink your resolutions".

  • Maintain weight: Before you sit down for a big holiday dinner or sneak a tasty treat, take the time to prepare a healthy dish that can be enjoyed by you and others. By consciously watching what you eat during a time that you typically feast, you are setting yourself up for success when trying to get healthy in 2018.
  • Save money: Don’t lose your hard-earned money. Give your insurance company a call and find out how much money you have left in your medical benefits flex account. Once you’ve determined how much you have left in your account, take the time to call your local dentist or doctor to schedule appointments or services you have been putting off. If you don’t use that money, you lose it!
  • Have a plan: Having a plan in place or determining your resolutions prior to the holidays will help you stay on track as you work towards a final goal. It can also be important as you may loss motivation around the holidays, but you can always think back to your resolutions to remind yourself why the change was important to you in the first place.
  • Be kind: The holidays are typically a time that we spend celebrating and thinking about others. It’s important to not only be kind to family, friends and strangers during this time, but also to yourself. You want to start the New Year off on a positive note in an effort to enable yourself to succeed!

6 STEPS TO PEARLY WHITE TEETH

A lot of people desire a set of sparkling white teeth, but when it comes to making the decisions that will help us attain one, we opt for the opposite! Red wine, tea, coffee, all guilty of staining our pearly whites, but we still guzzle them on a daily basis.

That is why we suggest that people research and get familiar with the recommended foods to eat to get pearly white teeth.

We all know the benefits of having white teeth: and just in case you don’t know or might have forgotten, let me remind you. Studies have shown that your smile or teeth are the first thing that someone notices about you and having white teeth not only gives the impression that you are healthy and personally hygienic, they also make you look more successful, more employable, more attractive and even five years younger. This gives you the confidence to smile and proudly display them.

Certain foods are recommended to assist in your pursuit for white teeth, but none will serve as a miracle cure or be more effective than a regimented oral hygiene routine.

Celery and carrots can help in whitening your teeth by washing away food debris while also strengthening your gums.

Cheese. Hard cheese contains calcium that strengthens both your gums and teeth. Cheese also contains a milk protein called casein that can reduce the loss of minerals from your enamel. It has also been noticed that cheese can raise pH – the level of acidity of a substance – of the mouth for some time after eating it, thus, discouraging tooth decay.

Herbs. Herbs such as parsley contain enough chlorophyll that neutralizes bad breath. It is also a source of antioxidants and essential oils that keeps the body healthy. Note however, that excessive consumption of parsley is bad for the health. Another herb that does wonders for the teeth is licorice root.

Oil. The swirling action of oil around your mouth can help to loosen debris in the mouth; consequently, reducing bacteria growth and population in your mouth.

Water. Ensure that you take in enough water every day. Your body needs to be hydrated in order to produce saliva for your mouth. By taking water regularly through the day, you decrease the growth and population of bacteria in your mouth and body.

Green and black tea. They contain polyphenols which suppresses the growth of bacteria. Green tea can promote good gum health as it is anti-inflammatory. Avoid herbal teas as they may contain sugar which is bad for your teeth. You should also consider white tea as it contains some bio-available fluoride.

Since this write-up is about 6 steps you should take to get pearly white teeth, let’s get on with it already.

·        Step 1: Brush and floss your teeth regularly and thoroughly. Although this is an obvious one, many of us however, do not brush or floss our teeth properly. You should ensure that you brush at least twice a day and for at least 2 minutes each. By skipping this step and doing the others you would not be maintaining your teeth.

·        Step 2: See your dentist. Before you apply any special treatment to your teeth, ensure that you visit your dentist and explain what you are planning and why you want to do it. Seeking a dentist’s professional opinion and advice is essential so that you do not end up with damaged teeth.

·        Step 3: Eat foods that whiten the teeth. You should consider buying and eating the following foods as they can naturally whiten your teeth. Such foods include strawberries which contain Malic acid that removes surface teeth discoloration; seeds like sunflower seeds and nuts like walnuts or almonds also remove surface stains by their abrasive texture. Another recommend food to whiten your teeth is onions, they help to prevent plaque from forming on your teeth when your chew them raw; apples are also great and they are recommended for teeth-whitening as their high water content promotes saliva production in our mouths.

·        Step 4: Avoid anything that stains the teeth. Foods rich in sugar should be avoided as they can stain your teeth, making them look discolored. You should also stay away from cigarettes if you wish to have and maintain white teeth. Stay away from sticky, chewy foods and limit the intake of drinks or fruits containing citric acid, as too much of it can lead to enamel erosion
.
·        Step 5: Thoroughly research professional and recommended over the counter whitening treatments. Ensure that you only use products that are FDA approved as safe for dental use.

·        Step 6: Do not eat just before going to bed. Cultivate the habit of eating hours before bedtime. This is because plaque development is usually worse at nights and eating just before going to bed increases this development.

Follow these simple steps and you will be well on your way to that Hollywood smile!

Great Expressions Shares 4 Tips to Enjoy a Safe Halloween

Are you one of the 75% of parents that has Halloween safety fear? 75%! Even though that number is incredibly high, only 33% of parents talk to their kids annually about Halloween. As Halloween approaches, Great Expressions Dental Centers (GEDC) wants to ensure the safest Halloween night ever by sharing a few tips.

4 Tips to Enjoy a Safe Halloween:

  • Light up! The best way to avoid injuries is to ensure your children are visible to those around you. Only 18% of parents use reflective tape on their children’s Halloween costumes, even though it’s the best way to ensure this.
  • The more the merrier! Only 12% of children five years of age or younger are permitted to trick-or-treat alone. The best way to ensure a safe Halloween is to get a group together and spend the evening with them, parents included. Safety in numbers.
  • Refresh on general safety steps. Children are twice as likely to be killed by a car while walking on Halloween night than at any other time of the year. Remind your children to look both ways before crossing the street and to stick to walking on sidewalks as they bounce from house to house.
  • Brush your teeth! Cavities are scary, too. Avoid sugary and chewy candies – especially those with caramel. Instead, select a few pieces of candy to eat in one sitting, rather than munching all day.  This limits the amount of time that the sugar is around to help make cavities. No matter how many treats they consume, be sure they brush their teeth immediately following to prevent tooth decay and cavities.

Back to school: Fight Bullying with a Smile

More than one out of every five students reports being bullied. More than half of bullying situations stop when a peer intervenes. With back to school season right around the corner, Great Expressions Dental Centers(GEDC) wants to take a stand against bullying with one easy gesture – smiling.
Smiling is one of the best and most simple ways to prevent bullying. As your child prepares to head back to school, GEDC would like to share the following tips with you to ensure your child, and your readers’ children, know how to combat bullying:
1.       Simply smile. A simple smile is all it takes to begin a friendship. Encourage your child to smile at their peers when they head back to school - especially those that are the target of bullies. This simple gesture can help someone in need. If your child is the one being bullied, help them understand that most bullies are just looking for a reaction. Encourage them to simply smile instead of getting worked up in an effort to get bullies to leave them alone.
2.       Get crafty. For bullied students, heading back to school can cause great anxiety. Spend some time with your child before school begins and create a craft that they can hand out to their classmates in an effort to make everyone feel included. GEDC recommends adding beads to a safety pin as a “friendship charm” – a perfect addition to a backpack or pencil case.
3.       Stand up to bullies. If your student sees someone being bullied, educate them on how to stand up against a bully. Most bullies feel foolish after being confronted. After confronting the bully, encourage your child to reach out to a teacher or trusted adult to report the behavior.
4.       Treat others the way you want to be treated. This tip is nothing new, but can be very powerful. As back to school season begins, take time to talk with your children on how to respect their peers and use their smile to comfort others and make friends.

5 Simple Gum Health Tips From the American Academy of Periodontology

Nearly 50% of adults 30 years old or older have periodontal disease in the U.S., and that number spikes to 65% in adults 65 years old or older. And it’s not a disease that’s readily discussed, despite the fact it’s 2.5 times more common than diabetes.

Studies show that smiles make you look more attractive, lower stress, elevate your mood and make you look younger. On the other hand, gum disease can lead to social anxiety and discomfort from loss of teeth and bad breath. Yet, many people don't take proper care of their gums. In fact, a 2015 survey from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) showed that 27% of U.S. adults lie to their dentist about how often they floss their teeth, with 14% saying they’d rather clean the toilet than floss. That’s hard to believe, isn’t it?

The good news is that gum disease is preventable, or reversible, if people follow these 5 Simple Tips for Healthy Gums:
  1. Brush twice a day (morning and night) and floss at bedtime. Each activity should take about 2 minutes, although flossing can take a little longer until you get the hang of it. The sequence doesn’t matter as long as you do a thorough job.
  2. Visit a periodontist once a year. While regular dental checkups are always important, periodontists receive an additional 3 years of training after dental school and have the necessary expertise and experience to most effectively treat gum disease.
  3. Watch your diet. Cut down on foods that are high in sugar such as cakes and cookies, and avoid sugary drinks like lemonade and cola whenever possible. Your gums—and your waistline—will thank you.
  4. Know the early warning signs. Symptoms of periodontal disease include red and swollen gums, bleeding while brushing or flossing receding gums, loose teeth, pus between the gums and teeth, mouth sores and persistent bad breath. If you have one or more of these symptoms, make an appointment to see a periodontist immediately.
  5. Check out Gumblr.org. This fun, educational website from the AAP will help you find a local periodo

Colgate Daily Repair #MyColgateSelfie

In celebration of National Women’s Health Week (May 8-14, 2016), Colgate Total is inviting women across the country to pledge to put their health first. It’s difficult to balance all your family’s needs with your own, so this week serves as a time to remind women what steps they can take to improve their health. One simple, yet effective change you can make is switching to Colgate Total Daily Repair products, allowing you to take your oral health off that lengthy to-do list.

I was lucky enough to test out the Colgate Total Daily Repair Toothpaste as well as the corresponding mouthwash and toothbrush. Colgate Total Daily Repair Toothpaste contains a multi-active formula that helps repair early teeth and gum damage before you may know it even exists.

This toothpaste a refreshing blast that leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean for hours. But the great taste is only the beginning of the advantages. This amazing toothpaste keeps both your teeth and gums looking their best. Brushing with this toothpaste protects your gums as well as your teeth. Often times, it's unhealthy gums that cause people to loose their teeth. This happened to my own grandmother, so I love that this toothpaste can help keep my gums healthy.  When it comes to my teeth, I noticed a marked difference in buildup after only a few uses. They looked whiter, and the enamel on my teeth has improved and looks less translucent.

The  brush was the perfect compliment to the toothpaste. It removes plaque but is gentle against your gums, so you won't have to worry about access bleeding. Finally, the mouthwash provides a burst of freshness that leaves your mouth feeling clean all day long. With Colgate Total Repair,  your breath will stay fresh for hours, but more importantly, you're reducing plaque and tartar build-up and greatly reducing the risk of gingivitis.  This one toothpaste really gives your the total package you need for a bright and shiny smile.

If you'd like to learn more about Colgate and all the oral care products they offer, be sure to visit the Colgate Total Daily Repair website. To keep up with new products and promotions, you can follow Colgate on face book.

My Thoughts

We all want a whiter smile. I know for me, years of coffee and tea have stained my teeth. I have tried some of the advanced whitening kits, but they made my teeth feel sensitive to hot and cold, and many of them just take too much time. When you have four kids, you're lucky to find time to brush at all, let a lone sit around with gel on your teeth for hours. The new Colgate Optic White Platinum High Impact White Toothpaste is the perfect way to get a whiter smile without any aggravation or discomfort. It works great and doesn't take any longer than your normal dental routine.

The Colgate Optic White Platinum Toothpaste works really well. Just brush as normal and your teeth will be four shades whiter in only a few weeks. As an added benefit, it also seals out new stains before they start. It comes in several varieties including Glistening Mint that leave your breath minty fresh and your teeth sparkling white. The  fresh mint flavor freshens your breath and the advanced stain prevention technology prevents new stains from forming.  I also love that it doesn't leave my teeth feeling sensitive like so many other whitening products I've tried in the past.

The Colgate Optic White Toothpaste is a force to be reckoned with. My teeth are looking whiter than they have since my teen years and I am thrilled with the results. If you want to give the new Optic White line a try, you can find it now in retailers nationwide. To learn more, be sure to visit the Colgate Optic White website.

Whimzee's dog treats - a stocking stuffer for your pet's teeth.

Whimzee's Dog Chews

A company of dog-lovers, people-lovers and Earth-lovers. They're obsessed with bringing only the best, healthiest and most-fun dog products to the world. And they do it in a sustainable, socially-responsible way.

Connect with Whimzee's Dog Chews

My Thoughts

When these arrived, I thought they were adorable little hedge hog looking chews. I have a large dog, so 4 came in the bag. Upon inspecting, they were large and hard. It wouldn't be easy to break apart, and I felt like it would take my dog a little while to eat. I wasn't 100% sure if this was meant to be a snack to the dog, or if it would last a few days.

When first giving to my lab, she carried it around, but then left it alone. I'd bring it back to her and give it to her, but she honestly wasn't very interested in it. At least while I was around. I discovered that she ate it while I was away for a few hours. She has anxieties and usually chews on one of her toys while I am away--thankfully nothing she isn't supposed to.

I gave her another one, and the same thing seemed to happen. She was disinterested when home, but when I was gone, she'd eat it. So I can't report how long it took her to break it apart and enjoy.

The ingredients in the Whimzee's treats let me feel safe with what I was giving her. There wasn't anything questionable in it. With all the ridges and grooves, I'm sure it was able to get some of the plaque off the dogs teeth. Over all, I was pleased with these and would continue to get them for her.

Celebrate the 2015 Halloween Candy Buy Back with Sparx

Halloween is a fun and exciting time for kids, but a destructible and toxic time for their teeth.  As a parent, how do you stop your child from partaking in the joy that is trick-or-treating? With the help of the 11th annual Halloween Candy Buy Back program, in which local dentists “buy” back kids’ Halloween candy in exchange for product packages, cash, or other incentives, Halloween can be enjoyable for kids, parents, and even US troops overseas!  This year, we want to promote a positive dental health message and hope to introduce kids to the great tasting, natural sweetener, xylitol.  While most children enjoy the taste of regular sugar candy, it is neither good for the child’s oral health or body.  Our product packages will be full of goodies including xylitol candy provided by Xlear Inc. which tastes great and is actually beneficial to your child’s health!

Founded in 2005 by Dr. Chris Kammer, the Halloween Candy Buy Back Program began as a way to keep excess Halloween candy “off the streets” and help keep kids’ mouths healthier. This year, the program is moving to be a force for good by teaming up with Xlear Inc., the leading manufacturers of xylitol products, and Tess Oral Health, makers of dental, professional, and oral hygiene products. Together they will partner with dental offices nationwide to reach the goal of sending 100,000 toothbrushes overseas as well collect children’s Halloween candy to give the soldiers a holiday away from home.  This simple act of kindness enables children to exchange their Halloween candy and receive a token in return while showing love and support to our men and women fighting for our country every day.

My Thoughts

Xlear is  the leading manufacturer of products made with Xylitol, an all natural way to prevent tooth decay.   Xylitol is a white crystalline substance that looks and tastes like sugar, and is now being used in a variety of products to help promote good oral health.  From candy to toothpaste, this amazing discovery is changing the way we think about oral hygiene.

SparX are tasty candies that are made with Xylitol. They come in three fantastic flavors including citrus, berry, and fruit. Each one is a sweet treat kids of all ages can enjoy. You can suck them or crunch them. Enjoy them one at a a time or by the handful. The fun tubes make them a great snack for on the go. They'd also be a a nice treat for Halloween. Right now, you can
get 30 trick-or-treat sized bags of xylitol candy in three great flavors: Natural Fruit, Natural Berry, and Natural Citrus. These naturally-flavored candy “dots” are loved by kids and parents alike, and are available for a limited time at xlear.com.

The products from Xlear are fun, functional, taste great, and best of all, they can help prevent cavities. If you'd like to learn more about Xclear and all the products they offer, head over to their website.
