Akin to an Australian Doc Martin with its fish-out-of-water premise and eccentric characters, the new medical dramedy THE HEART GUY, Series
Gifted but arrogant heart surgeon Hugh Knight (Rodger Corser, Glitch, The Doctor Blake Mysteries) leads a charmed life in Sydney. He believes his talent lets him live outside the rules—until an incident involving drugs and alcohol brings his world crashing down. Placed on probation and banned from performing surgery, Hugh retreats to his rarely visited hometown of Whyhope in rural Australia.
Working as a GP at an underfunded hospital with a no-nonsense boss (Hayley McElhinney, The Babadook), Hugh struggles to reacclimate to rural life. And his complicated family situation makes his fall from grace even worse. Between his politically ambitious mother (Tina Bursill, Home and Away), emotionally distant father (Steve Bisley, The Great Gatsby, Mad Max), and his ex-girlfriend Charlie (Nicole da Silva, Wentworth, Rush)—who is now married to his younger brother—Hugh is constantly reminded why he left Whyhope. Can he start afresh, or will his bad-boy tendencies end his medical career for good?

My Thoughts
The Heart Guy is a fun new series that merges medical drama and comedy into one fun package. The series centers around a genius heart doctor named named Hugh Knight. His life is going great until he is arrested for a drugs charge. Now he has to return home and work in the little hospital where he grew up. This leads to conflicts with his family, especially his ex who married his brother. Series one has ten episodes.
1- Hugh returns home after his arrest. He interrupts his parents anniversary party and learns his brother married his old girlfriend.
2- Hugh tries to substitute his urine with a patient to avoid getting caught drinking, but it tests positive for marijuana. Penny still gives him a second chance.
3- Hugh is concerned about Jim's health. He tests a prototype on a big, and hits on Charlie.
4- Hugh is sued for malpractice. He brings his brother back to Sydney and catches him with another woman.
5 - Hugh becomes a local hero when he saves a young athlete from a trap.
6 - Hugh loses a patient after a bar fight. His rival shows up in town for a transplant.
7- Hugh has to deal with a meth-addict who cuts off his own penis.
8 - Hugh is allowed to perform surgery again, and Meryl wants to run for mayor.
9 - Hugh is worried his hand is damaged, and Joey gets a bad diagnosis.
10 - Penny accepts a job in the city, and Charlie is a little interested in Hugh's relationship with her.
This was a great show. There is lots of drama, but also plenty of humor. I'm enjoying the gradual evolution of Hugh as he starts to come to terms with his new life and realize the errors in the way he lived before. I also love the love triangle with the brothers. I'm excited to see what happens next season.
