Dalgliesh, Series 1 DVD

Enigmatic Inspector Adam Dalgliesh, (Bertie Carvel, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Doctor Foster) is a cerebral, reserved man who specializes in solving unusual murders. As he investigates crimes in 1970s England, he plumbs the darker depths of the human psyche in his pursuit of justice. Based on P.D. James’s global bestsellers.

My Thoughts

Dalgliesh is a brand new crime-based drama set England during the 1970s. Based on the novels by PD James, the series centers around an inspector named Adam Dalgliesh. As both a widower and a poet, his mind tends to skim the dark side but he also comes up with unique ways to solve crime. This first season includes three full length adaptions.

Shroud for a Nightingale- A nursing student is murdered by poisoning and Adam must figure out who the villain is.

The Black Tower - Adam visits an old friend at a retirement center, but when seniors start dropping like flies, Adam gets wrapped up in the mystery.

A Taste for Death - Two young men are murdered inside a church and Adam must find out why this sacrilegious crime took place.

Set in the late 19th century in Toronto, the methodical and dashing Detective Murdoch enlists radical new forensic techniques like fingerprinting, ultraviolet light, and trace evidence to solve some of the city’s most gruesome murders. This five-disc DVD or four-disc Blu-ray set ($59.99, Amazon.com) includes the special 200th episode and Q&A with Yannick Bisson and Daniel Maslany (Detective Llewellyn Watts on the show). Season 13 of Murdoch Mysteries previously premiered weekly on Acorn TV from December 2019 – April 2020. Called a “glorious streaming service… an essential must-have” (The Hollywood Reporter), AMC Networks’ Acorn TV is North America’s most popular and largest streaming service featuring high-quality television from Britain and Beyond.

Unfortunately, he is still rattled by suspicions about Violet Hart’s (Shanice Banton) appointment to coroner. The station also sees a new addition with Special Constable Robert Parker (Marc Senior), an African American former Pinkerton who went from suspect in a union murder to helping solve the case. Meanwhile Dr. Julie Ogden (Hélène Joy) is happily settled into her role as a full-time surgeon at Toronto Mercy Hospital but is surprised by the attentions of her colleague Dr. Andrew Dixon (Sebastian Pigott).

Inspired by Maureen Jennings’ novels, this popular series has garnered an amazing 45 Gemini® and Canadian Screen Award nominations from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television during its run, and Yannick Bisson won Canadian Screen Award’s ‘Fan’s Choice Award.’

My Thoughts

Murdoch Mysteries is one of my favorite crime based shows. I love period drama, and I love learning about criminal investigations. This show combines both in a late 1890 - early 1900 setting. You'll learn how forensics experts solved the cases before they had the help of computers and DNA.  The cast of characters are funny, interesting, and diverse. This season includes 18 new episodes.

Staring Blindly Into the Future - Tesla gets into a fight with Thomas Edison and disappears.

Fox Hunt - During a fox hunt, the dogs stumble across a dead body.

Kill Thy Neighbor - Murdoch is framed for the murder of his neighbor after he turns up dead.

Things Left Behind - Watts finds a body in an alley. Murdoch takes that case while Watts investigates the theft of a painting.

The Future is Unwritten - Julia and Murdoch want to prove Violet is a murderer. Crabtree is missing.

This is such a great series. All of episodes are a bit on the dark side, but they are always tempered with humor. Both the costumes and the sets are realistic and really help to paint a picture of the time period.   This series is definitely a refreshing switch from the norm, and I'm looking forward to watching the  next season. If you want to take the advantage of a full set of amazing old world  stories, than this is the box set for you. You can order Murdoch Mysteries: Season 13 on DVD or Blu-ray on Acorn Media or Amazon.

MISS FISHER & THE CRYPT OF TEARS

In Acorn TV’s first feature film, the Honourable Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis, The Babadook) embarks on an exhilarating new journey of mystery and mayhem through exotic 1920s British Palestine and the opulence of grand London manors.  Fisher frees a Bedouin girl, Shirin Abbas (Izabella YenaHigh School Lover) from unjust imprisonment in late 1920s Jerusalem, and unravels a wartime mystery concerning priceless emeralds, ancient curses, and the truth behind the suspicious disappearance of Shirin’s forgotten tribe. Partially crowd-funded by the series’ die-hard fans, Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears continues the story of the global sensation, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and is the series’ first new installment since 2015. Premiered in select theatres and Acorn TV (DVD/Blu-ray 1-Disc, 1 feature-length film, $24.99). (Limited DVDs/Blu-rays, Online Screeners Available).

My Thoughts

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is one of my favorite series from Acorn to date. I love a good historical mystery and the roaring twenties in one of my favorite time periods. The costumes are stunning and each episode has a surprising ending.

This set includes a DVD/Blu-ray combo on one of Miss Fisher's Full length episodes.  In Crypt of Tears, Fisher helps to rescue a young Bedouin girl who was sent to prison. Fisher fights to prove her innocence, she learns there is a much bigger conspiracy. There are stolen gems and curses to overcome, and the disappearance of an entire tribe.

What I love most about this series is Miss Fisher herself. She holds a place of respect in a male-dominated world and it is a spot that is well-earned. Yet, she loses none of her femininity.  Her style is flawless, her personality spunky, and her wits incredibly sharp. Follow Miss Fischer as she investigates clubs during prohibition and slinks fearlessly through dark alleyways. Not only does she come across as an amazing sleuth, she does it a carefree way that will leave you smiling once the danger has passed. If you enjoy shows with strong women, this is one you simply can't miss.

You can order Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears on DVD/Bluray  at Acorn Media or Amazon.

My Thoughts

While I love all the intense crime thrillers available today, it's also nice to find one with a little humor once in a while. Agatha Raisin offers just that. After almost being accused of murder herself, the former executive discovers she's pretty good a solving crimes. As more people turn up dead, she joins forced with the local detective to bring the murderers to justice.  The thid season includes four feature length episodes based off the best-selling novels.

Agatha Raisin and the Haunted House - Agatha finds herself mixed up in murder in a Halloween themed special featuring an all star cast.

THE BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES, Series 6

Acorn features the Blu-ray/DVD debut of one of Acorn TV’s most popular series, THE BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES, Series 6 on May 19, 2020. Considered to be “New Zealand's tongue-in-cheek answer to Midsomer Murders” (The New Zealand Herald), this detective drama features quirky, complex characters, piquant wit, as well as mystifying crimes and compelling whodunnit investigations.  After transferring from a big city to the little town of Brokenwood, DSS Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea, Go Girls) and Detective Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland, The Almighty Johnsons) investigate the macabre. Now on a four-disc DVD set or two-disc Blu-ray set ($59.99, Amazon.com) with a 10-minute behind-the scenes featurette. Series 6 of The Brokenwood Mysteries previously premiered on Acorn TV in January. Called a “glorious streaming service… an essential must-have” (The Hollywood Reporter), AMC Networks’ Acorn TV is North America’s most popular and largest streaming service featuring high-quality television from Britain and Beyond.
In Series 6 of this charming New Zealand mystery, detectives Mike Shepherd (Rea), Kristin Sims (Sutherland), and Sam Breen (Nic Sampson) investigate a death at a steampunk event, a novelist’s killing modeled on a murder in his new book, the shooting of an animal rights activist, and a suspicious suicide at a women’s prison.
My Thoughts

The Brokenwood Mysteries is a fast-paced series set in New Zealand. It revolves around Mike Shepard, a homicide detective. He sets out to solve some grisly murders along with his partner Kriston Sims. This season includes four exciting episodes including:

The Power of  Steam - A murder takes place in the steampunk community during a fireworks display.

A Real Page Turner - An author is murdered just like one of the characters in his book. The person found with the body is Shepard's ex-wife.

Dead Men Don't Shoot Ducks - An animal rights activist gets killed while interfering with duck hunts.

Dead and Buried - A suspicious suicide occurs in the prison. Their investigation brings them face to face with many convicts they helped put away.

I really enjoyed this new series. The stories were all exciting, though definitely gruesome at times. The New Zealand scenery was lovely and all the actors did a great job.  If you'd like to grab this awesome box set for yourself, you can find it online at Acorn Media or on Amazon.
