DVD Review: The Syndicate All or Nothing

The BBC One and Acorn TV drama series The Syndicate: All or Nothing makes its DVD debut on November 15, 2016 from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. At the crumbling stately home of Hazelwood Manor, life for its few remaining downstairs staff is about to take a dramatic leap upstairs, when their small syndicate beats the unlikely odds and wins the lottery. From BAFTA Award-winning writer Kay Mellor (Playing the Field), the stellar ensemble features Lenny Henry (Broadchurch, Othello), Cara Theobold (Downton Abbey), Anthony Andrews (Brideshead Revisited), Alice Krige (Tyrant, Thor: The Dark World), Elizabeth Berrington (In Bruges), Melanie Hill (Stardust), and Richard Rankin (The Crimson Field). This set includes all 6 episodes of the series (DVD 2-disc set, $39.99, AcornOnline.com). This series had its U.S. Premiere in August 2016 on Emmy®-nominated Acorn TV, the premier North American streaming service for world-class television from Britain and beyond.

The stately home of Hazelwood Manor has been in the family of Lord Hazelwood (Anthony Andrews) since the 18th century. But the once-impressive manor is crumbling, and its owners are burdened with 6.5 million in debt. Lord and Lady Hazelwood (Alice Krige) have been forced to let go of most of the staff, and only five servants help maintain the estate. But when the remaining staff wins the lottery, the lines between upstairs and downstairs begin to blur.

BBC One aired two previous seasons of The Syndicate in 2012 and 2013. Each installation is a standalone season that features a different cast centered around five members of a betting pool winning the lottery in different settings. The Syndicate: All or Nothing was broadcast on BBC One in June 2015.

My Thoughts

Each year, The Syndicate introduces to a new group of people who hit it big in the lottery, and show us how it changes their lives.  This year, the servants in a floundering castle are the big winners, and their luck could mean the restoration if the estate they love. But can nobles who own the house let go of their power?  There are six episodes in this season.

1- Hazelwood Manor is 6 Million in debt and falling apart-Then the servants win the lottery.

2- Amy is missing and Godfrey was the last to see her. Lord Hazelwood's health declines.

3 - Spencer wants to sell the house. The police continue to search for Amy. Dawn uncovers some surprising information about Sean.

4- Nick is found and questioned about Amy. Dawn gets a ransom demand. Not everyone if willing to pay.

5- Despite Sarah's troubled past, she hooks up with Sean. Nick gets shot, and Andy is suspected.

6- Amy's disappearance is about to be solved, and Lord Hazelwood convinces Julie to reveal secrets that may save the manor.

This was a great show! I love the idea of the servants blending with the masters. There are a lot of great twists and turns, and the ending wasn't what I expected.  I haven't seen the first two seasons, but I definitely plan to look for them now. If you'd like to grab a copy of this fantastic series, you can find it online on Acorn Media or on Amazon.
