DVD Review: Lovejoy Series 2

“One of television’s most charming and appealing characters” (The Washington Post) returns in Lovejoy, Series 2, arriving on DVD from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand, on September 2, 2014. Previously aired on A&E, the series, based on the popular books by Jonathan Gash, stars Ian McShane (Deadwood, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) as Lovejoy, a rascal of an antiques dealer with a heart of gold. McShane is joined by Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey) and Dudley Sutton (Cockneys vs Zombies, Smiley’s People) in this lighthearted whodunit. Outstanding guest stars in this series include Celia Imrie (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Ian McNeice (Doc Martin), Neil Dudgeon (Midsomer Murders), Warren Clarke (A Clockwork Orange), Brian Blessed (I, Claudius), and two-time Oscar®-nominee Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton). This DVD 3-disc set includes 12 episodes ($49.99, AcornOnline.com). Series 1 and 2 are also available to stream on Acorn TV, the premier British TV streaming service in North America.

Golden Globe® winner Ian McShane returns as Lovejoy, the roguish antiques dealer with an eye for sorting real treasures from fakes. In the wild world of riches and relics, Lovejoy’s skills are invaluable, especially when he finds himself surrounded by people who would kill to make a fortune.

In these 12 episodes, Lovejoy finds himself pitted against a roving band of French thieves, a vicious Greek kingpin, and a wide variety of snooty British aristocrats—among others. But with the help of his trusty team, including Eric (Chris Jury, The Big Game), Tinker (Dudley Sutton), and the exquisite Lady Jane Felsham (Phyllis Logan), Lovejoy’s gift for solving mysteries is the genuine article.

My Thoughts

Lovejoy mixes the world of antiques with the world of crime and this man can spot a shady criminal as easily as he can spot a forgery. He might be a little bit of a rogue, but he also has a good heart. Series 2 includes 12 exciting episodes.

Just Desserts - Lovejoy just spent 8 months in prison for a crime he didn't commit and now he's out for revenge.

The Italian Venus - Lovejoy gets in the middle of family drama when a rich man has a hold on his brother.

Bin Diving- One of Lady Jane's friend's is robbed and Lovejoy is the prime suspect.

Montezuma's Revenge - It appears as though an Inca artifact is cursed, but is it really magic or something more sinister.

Who Dares, Sings - Lovejoy helps his friend refurbish his bar, but needs a good explanation of where the furniture came from.

One Born Every Minute - Lovejoy tracks down an artist for a client, but there might be more than painting involved.

National Wealth - Lovejoy takes on a film star as a client and French criminals are involved.

Raise the Hispanic-A bride asks Lovejoy for help when a body is discovered on her wedding day.

Sugar & Spice - Lovejoy visits his daughter at school and winds up helping out the headmistress.

Lily's Pearls -Lady Jane asks Lovejoy to check into a land deal and they discover it's not as kosher as it seems.

Riding in Rollers - When a widow gets a raw deal at a charity auction, Lovejoy is on the case.

The Black Virgin of Vladimir - Lovejoy finally gets his revenge for his false imprisonment.

This was such a great series. It has all the mystery without a lot of forensics, making it a fun and entertaining watch. You can order Lovejoy Series 2 on DVD for only $49.99 at Acorn Media or on Amazon.
