The Forgotten Pharaoh #Free on Amazon

Over four thousand years ago, the great Pharaoh Djedefre was cursed for murdering his brother. Centuries later, a team of archaeologists sets out to prove his innocence. Julie Gerber isn't thrilled to be pulled out of school her senior year to follow her parents halfway around the world, but the cute Brit and the sexy young patron of the project make things more exciting ... maybe too exciting.

As the team digs deeper into the mystery, they unearth something they never expected. Animals and people are drained of blood and some simply vanish. Julie knows there's something sinister going on at the excavation site, but with a documentary on the line that could make or break her parents' career, they refuse to walk away. Now the team must find both the ancient murderer and the monster that's hunting them down. With the bodies piling up, only one thing is certain—some secrets are meant to stay buried.

Book Review: A.C. Deen's "Awakening"

Paranormal is one of my all-time favorite genres, and I love getting to check out new authors. From the description of this one, I thought this was going to be a fun read. I was sort of right, and sort of disappointed at the same time.

The story follows a young woman whose sudden transformation to a supernatural creature adds complications to a time in her life when there are already a lot of changes to deal with. The normal things one goes through when preparing to go to college and start their adult life take a back seat to trying to adjust to physical and mental changes that come with her new power.

First off, let me say that I really enjoyed the lead character. There were several aspects of Ellie that I could relate to, despite the massive transformation she undergoes and the crazy circumstances that result. I think the author captured that struggle of finding your way well, and she also did a good job of showing the various challenges Ellie faced, as well as how she overcame them.

On the flip side, this book was written in a bit of a different way. It's entirely told in a "this is what happened" style, along with a couple of letters, rather then a dialogue/narration style that I am used to from other books. It feels like there is so much potential yet to be unlocked from this author, and I will be interested to see how she grows and develops as she continues on the writing path.

Again, it's a bit of an unusual writing style, but it's got an interesting premise, a cool lead character, and the potential for many more adventures with Ellie. I'd recommend reading the sample to see if the style will work for you.

About The Originals The Complete Second Season
As Original vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson returned to the vibrant, supernaturally charged city of New Orleans in season one, he was stunned to learn — along with his siblings Elijah and Rebekah — that Hayley, a werewolf, was pregnant with his child, and his vampire protégé, Marcel, whom the Original siblings had thought long dead, was ruling the French Quarter. Soon, a bloody war escalated between vampires and witches — the stakes raised by powerful teenage witch Davina and by Klaus’s bond with Cami, a student with a painful past — and a ruthless pack of wolves seized the opportunity to stage a violent coup. Now, in season two, a new status quo must be adjusted to, as the newly empowered werewolves control the city. Klaus struggles with weaknesses as Elijah desperately tries to save Hayley — now a hybrid — from a vicious spiral of self-destruction. Meanwhile, with the re-emergence of several Mikaelsons, “family is power” takes on new meaning.

Short Story Review: Crimson Beat by Elle J. Rossi

The Spring Equinox brings a slew of nasties to the streets of Nashville. Huntress Josie Hawk is determined to get her arch enemy to sign a treaty, whether the Assembly is behind her or not. But when Keller O'Leary--sexiest vampire alive--returns, will Josie learn to be a team player, or will she stake the heart that has captured hers?

About the Author

Elle J Rossi grew up in rural Indiana surrounded by great people, a huge family and more animals than she could count. But the sites and sounds of the world beckoned, so she left her small town to escape into a creative world full of music. As a full time singer she was able to lose herself in a thousand different songs in a hundred different places.

After meeting the love of her life and settling down, she yearned to find a new and fulfilling creative outlet. Overly fond of the happily ever after, she wondered what it would be like to have her own characters lead her down dark and twisted paths. The very first word on the very first page sealed her fate. She'd found a new love. She'd found her escape.

Now along with weaving haunting tales about the journey to love, she's creating cover art for authors around the world and loving every second of it. For fun, she cranks country music to take her back to her roots, and sings karaoke anytime she gets a chance. Her husband, two children, and two cats that rule the roost keep her company along the way and guarantee she doesn't get lost in the enchanted forest. She wouldn't have it any other way.

You can find out more about Elle J Rossi in these places!

My Thoughts

Josie Hawk is only half human. She spends part of her time running a bar and the other half defending the city of Nashville from monsters. Everything from vampires to djinns stalk the streets. As Ostara approaches, a day when the hours of light and dark are equal, they only get stronger. She's ready to do battle, but what she's not ready for is the return of her sexy vampire ex-boyfriend and his band, The Crimson Beat.

I LOVED this sexy short story. Josie Hawk is such a fun character with well-developed personality traits.  She's filled with strength, spunk, and a whole lot of stubbornness. It's hard not to fall for Keller's sexy Irish accent and you can see why Josie has a hard time staying away from him. In the midst of their sizzling romance, there's also no lack  of knife-welding action. A variety of intense battles lead Josie to the door of the leader of the dark in the hopes of bringing peace to Nashville, even if she has to die trying.

Crimson Beat is a fast paced and exciting read and I fully intend to dive into the rest of the Josie Hawk series.

Book Review: Redemption (Night School Vampire Hunter Trilogy Novella #3) by Michelle Cornwell-Jordan

Darkness fell over Ame’ Academy when Angel plummeted into the gaping twilight of the abyss. Ismet, Bella Donna, Elin and Rafael were now left to pick up the pieces.

But those that loved Angel refused to believe she was gone; so the search for her and the truth begins. Plus the clock is counting down; the Beast has escaped its pit and so the group of friends, with the help of unlikely allies must face an ancient evil, and once again face the heartache of losing someone they love, to save the world from destruction once and for all.

The highly anticipated and surprising finale to the Night School Vampire Hunter Trilogy!

 My Thoughts

The third novella in the Night School Vampire Hunter Trilogy picks up where the last one left off.  Angel has sacrificed her life to save her brother, her friends, and the world from an evil spirit. Now, left alone with their grief, her friends and her true love must deal with the chaos left behind. Rafael, Angel's soul mate, is so overcome by his grief, he's driven to the brink of insanity and her friends are forced to look for answers on their own in the hopes of freeing Angel before the prophecies can be fulfilled.

Redemption is filled with surprising twists and turns. I love all the unique mythological creatures that are brought into the story, including Lioness Shifters, fiery Djinns, Phoenixes, and vampire-witch hybrids. All of these creatures blend perfectly along with the Native American legends of the great Beast.  A lot of action is packed into this novella as the Alliance of the Supernatural battle the Beast for control of the Human and Supernatural world. It's a fast-paced read with an ending you'll never see coming. Just be sure to read the first two books in the series first so you get all the back story and can truly appreciate this unique work of fiction.

I’ve never been to Egypt.  It’s on my bucket list, but with four kids and a tight budget, it won’t be happening anytime soon. Since The Forgotten Pharaoh is set in modern-day Egypt, this made writing it a little more challenging. I normally set my stories in places I’ve lived or at least visited.  In the months I was writing the novel, I spent a lot of time researching Cairo, Giza and Abu Rawash. I looked at photos and videos on you tube, and read dozens of books on Egypt past and present.  I probably did more research on this book than all my others combined. During my studies, I learned about several interesting tourist spots in Egypt and tried to include them in the story. Here are a few of my favorites, all of which Julie Gerber got to visit.

The Great Pyramid of Giza- This is one of the most well-known tourist locations in Egypt. It’s hard to get a good idea how large they actually are when you’re looking at pictures, but the pyramid built by Khufu is over 700 feet tall.  I also learned they now offer laser light shows outside the pyramids. That sounds like a show worth watching.

The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities – I changed the name of this museum because a lot of shady things happen there, but the fictional setting was loosely based on The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. This museum stores the largest variety of Egyptian artifacts on the planet.  You can view golden sarcophagi, mummies, canopic jars and much, much more. No trip to Egypt would be complete without a stop there.

Cairo Marketplace – The Cairo marketplace is a giant bazaar that merges the old with the new. You can pick up electronics or ancient artifacts, both of which probably have a 50/50 chance of being authentic. Sample cuisines, peruse art, and just have a great time. Even doing window shopping online was fun.

The Colossi of Memnon – This place simply fascinated me. These two giant statues have stood for thousands of years and were a tourist attraction even back in ancient times. Noblemen from all over carved their names in the stones to show they had visited. The statues were named after Memnon, a hero of the Trojan War who was slain by Achilles. They called him the Ruler of the Dawn.  The thing that made this sight so special was that on certain mornings, always within two hours of sunrise, a lucky few would hear Memnon’s song rise from the lower base of the carvings. The stones would actually hum.  They believe now the phenomena had a natural occurrence. An earthquake shifted the stone at some point in time and dew became trapped in the crevices. When the sun rose, the rapid temperature increase inside the porous rock created a soulful sound.  Unfortunately, it’s been a very long time since anyone heard the statues sing, but it’s still an amazing story.

Cairo Tower – I stumbled across this place completely by accident while trying to decide where my characters should stop to eat. The free-standing concrete tower is crowned by a circular observation deck affording an amazing view of greater Cairo and the River Nile. The lattice work, which has been enhanced with purple lights in more recent years, was crafted in the design of a lotus, an iconic symbol of the pharaohs.  I watched a few videos of the view from the tower, and it was truly stunning.

Of course, there are many more captivating stops in Egypt and in my novel. It would take forever to talk about all of them. These are only a few that will be on my personal itinerary when I finally make it to Egypt. Until them, I’ll just keep reading about them.

The Forgotten Pharaoh - Fact vs. Fiction

Purchase

Julie Gerber isn't thrilled to be pulled out of school her senior year to follow her parents halfway around the world to unearth a lost pyramid. However, when the cute British guy and the mysterious financier of their project both fight for her attention, things start to get interesting.

The pharaoh known as Djedefre was cursed for the murder of his eldest brother. The work of the archaeologists brings new secrets to light, ones that prove the fallen god-king wasn't the villain history had painted him to be. Can they prove his innocence?

As the team digs deeper into the mystery, members of the party vanish or end up dead. Someone is determined to keep the truth hidden at all costs, even 4,500 years later.

While The Forgotten Pharaoh is primarily a work of my twisted imagination, there is some truth to it.  Djedefre was a real pharaoh of the Forth Dynasty. Hearing his story on a documentary on the History Channel is what spurred the idea for this novel. I took some real facts and explained away some of the holes in history. Some of my explanations are paranormal in origin, but not all of them. Occasionally, I took some liberties for the sake of the story.  Today I will separate fact from fiction, and tell you some of the truths of Djedefre’s story.

Djedefre - The tomb of Djedefre was first discovered in the early twentieth century by French archaeologist Emile Chassinat. Because the pyramid had been destroyed as well as all the statues, it was believed for years that Djedefre had committed some horrible crime, possibly even murdering his older brother to steal his crown.  The fact that he chose to build away from Giza, the location of the Great Pyramid built by his father Khufu, also led credence to the assumption there was a rift in the family.  Because the site had already been robbed and no valuables were found, it was abandoned for decades and for all those years, Djedefre was vilified without any solid facts. Later, the area became a military zone and was off limits until only a few years ago. Then Egyptologists revisited the site to prove once and for all whether Djedefre really did murder his brother.  This is what my story is based on, but I did elaborate quite a bit about the condition of the tomb. The real tomb is destroyed inside and out, so the Egyptologists could only work with the rubble left on the site and other clues they found throughout Egypt.  They now believe Djedefre is innocent of his brother’s murder and only moved his pyramid to Abu Rawash because the location on the hill allowed it to stand taller than even the Great Pyramid.  It is thought it was once the most beautiful pyramid in all of Egypt, until the Romans invaded and repurposed the polished granite and limestone.  No one is sure how long Djedefre reigned. Some hieroglyphs suggest it was only a few years while others feel it was decades, and while there is no solid evidence as to the kind of ruler he was, they have discovered hieroglyphs  in the tomb of his niece, Meresankh (daughter of Kawab), that praised him. They also found a large boat in the tomb of his father Khufu that they now believe dispels the theory of a family spat.

Hetepheres – Hetepheres was the sister and wife of Djedefre and she added a whole new element to my story.  Initially she was only supposed to be briefly mentioned, but her tale was so intriguing I had to work it in.  First of all, she really did wear a blond wig—the only Egyptian queen we know of who did so.  This alone makes her stand out. It’s also a fact that she is the longest living queen on record for ancient Egypt and there is absolutely no record of her death. No tomb has ever been found and to date no one has any idea what happened to her. She simply vanished from the timeline. I explained her disappearance in the book, but it is purely fancy.  It is completely true that she married all three of her brothers in turn and had a daughter named Meresankh by Prince Kawab. They were indeed very close and when Meresankh died before her mother, Heterpheres gave up her tomb to her daughter. This was a great sacrifice for an Ancient Egyptian, who believed their tomb was passage to the afterlife. Much of the information we know about Heterpheres was discovered in the tomb of Meresankh which plays a huge role in The Forgotten Pharaoh.  The tomb is also one of the most well-preserved ever to be discovered and was only recently opened back up to tourism.  Inside is a lovely portrait of the fair-haired queen.

Kawab – Prince Kawab was indeed the crown prince of Egypt and first in line to succeed Khufu. He died before his father, and thus never took the crown. There is still speculation as to how he died and talk of foul play, but there is no proof that he was murdered. No one knows much about him at all, and all my speculations are purely fictional.

Khufu – Khufu is the pharaoh who built the Great Pyramid.  By some accounts, he was believed to be a tyrant who sold his own daughters into prostitution in order to raise the money to outdo his father’s pyramid.  This theory played in well with my storyline, so I went with it.

Khafre - Again, there are more questions than answers, but Khafre did succeed Djedefre to the thrown and even married Hetepheres. Some think he may have murdered Djedefre or killed him in retribution, but many of these theories have been debunked by the recent revelations at Djedefre’s tomb.

The Sphinx – No one knows for certain who built the Sphinx, but in the documentary about Djedefre, it was suggested he may have built it to honor his father Khufu. I went with this theory, but it is only a theory.

These are just a few of the things I learned in while I was studying Djedefre.  I encourage everyone to do their own fact-finding. A great place to start is the HISTORY CHANNEL'S "The Lost Pyramid" of Djedefre. The details I presented here are to the best of my knowledge, based on months of research. However, one of the exciting things about Egyptology is that new evidence comes to light all the time, so new information may be discovered. Who knows, my version may turn out to be closer to the truth than even I imagined.

Our Thoughts
I love historical fiction, and Her Dear and Loving Husband sounded right up my alley - especially with its interest in magick, past lives, and the Salem Witch Trials.  It hooked me right from the beginning pages.

A little bit into it, I admit I was sorely disappointed - not the writing, not the story - but James' secret?  He's a vampire.  I dislike vampires - vampire movies, vampire books, anything to do with vampires.  Revulsed.  Maybe it's a past life thing of my own, who knows?  If I had known James' secret before reading this book, I probably wouldn't have picked it up.  Which would have been too bad for me!

Her Dear and Loving Husband is a tender love story and despite my personal aversion to vampires, I quite enjoyed it.  I will say though, I was very glad James was no longer a hunter!!  I enjoyed the book so much that I think I'm going to have to get the whole trilogy . . . sigh . . . there are a few loose ends in the story that I wish had been tied up - but it doesn't detract from the story itself.  It's well written with strong characters - definitely an enjoyable read! I look forward to reading the entire trilogy!
