Protecting Your Child’s Health: Expert Answers to Urgent Environmental Questions - #Giveaway

"Practical information to help build the best possible future for your child." —from the foreword by Mona Hanna-Attisha, MD, MPH, FAAP, author of What the Eyes Don't See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City

As a parent, you know your most important job is protecting your child. But, you may not know as much about the numerous environmental hazards your child encounters every day. In a sea of "natural" products and questionable online experts, where can you find information you can trust? Protecting Your Child's Health offers clear guidance on assessing and preventing the risks where your children live, learn, and play. Written by experts at the American Academy of Pediatrics, this practical Q&A guide offers evidence-based answers to questions about food and water safety, air pollution, radiation, pesticides, and more, helping you keep your children safe from the day-to-day environmental dangers in your home, school, and community.

Excerpt

Question:  My 7-year-old daughter is due for her annual physical exam. I have seen news stories about the potential health effects of plasticizers and possible relationship to early puberty. She likes to use nail polish and lotions with fragrance. Given that she already has early signs of puberty, I would like to know what this means for her health.

Answer Generally, puberty is occurring earlier in girls. Specifically, the age at onset of breast budding is occurring earlier, although the age at first menstru- ation is thought to have remained stable over time. Increasing obesity plays a role in earlier maturation. A variety of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been shown to either cause delay or promote early development of puberty. Research is ongoing to enhance our understanding of the role of EDCs on growth and development and on puberty because the early onset of puberty is a risk factor for development of breast cancer later in life. Until we know more, it is wise to take a precautionary approach and reduce exposures to EDCs in foods and other products.

My Thoughts

I have four children, but even with twenty years of experience, I still have a million questions when it comes to their health and safety. The world can be a dangerous place, and while we can cover things like stranger danger and alcohol awareness, the every-changing environment is an area where I felt I needed a little more education. The book covers a variety of topics ranging from the best choices when you're feeding your newborn to how to handle all the complexities of puberty. There are also tons of tips on how to eat healthy foods, like avoiding foods with antibiotics and the safest way to store your foods. One of my favorite sections covered home safety and how to keep your home free of harmful chemicals.

This book provided a great deal of valuable information about the health hazards children face every day of their lives. I thought at first it might be a little too wordy or boring, but the question and answer format makes it a quick and easy read as well as an educational one. I would recommend this book to mothers everywhere, whether your kids are newborns or teenagers. There is something in here for everyone. When you finish reading, you'll come away feeling armed with all the information you need to keep you children safe.

CarSeat CoPilot Automatic Alert System Keeps your Child Safe

The CarSeat CoPilot Automatic Alert System is a patented technology device, designed to assist parents and caregivers in remembering their most prized possession in the backseat. The seat belt clip sensor attaches to the straps of your child’s car seat, transmitting a signal that triggers the alarm sound with the key fob (included), when separated by more than 10 feet. The CoPilot purposely does not rely on a smartphone app, cellular data coverage, BluetoothTM technology, or WiFi connectivity, indicating that it should work at all times.

Features:
  • PATENTED TECHNOLOGY: It is a patented use of radio wave communication for this product. The CoPilot purposely does not rely on a smartphone app cellular data coverage, BluetoothTM technology, or WiFi connectivity, indicating that it should work at all times.
  • HOW IT WORKS: The CoPilot is a seat belt clip sensor that attaches to the straps of your infant/car seat, transmitting a signal that triggers the alarm sound with the key fob (included), when separated by more than 10 feet.
  • WHY YOU NEED IT: At least 52 children have died in unattended cars so far this year, making it the second-worst year in history, and with the holiday madness coming up, it can continue to happen because no parent thinks it can happen to them.

My Thoughts

It will never happen to me. That is the type of stuff that happens to other people. We have all thought that at some point. I have literally had that conversation with my husband about falling asleep at the wheel. "Do you think anyone this has ever happened to thought it would happen to them?" This, after the umpteenth time he told me he was fine. These are the kinds of things we do no prepare for that we easily could. Why would we not use something so simple to protect our children from the simplest mistakes or oversights we as parents can make? That is what the CarSeat CoPilot Automatic Pilot System keeps from happening. It is super easy to install. It goes over the already existent straps of the car seat and sits below the chest clip at the top.
It comes with two key fobs, one for each parent. If the key fob and the CoPilot are separated by more than ten feet while it is still "clipped," then the alarm will sound on the key fob. I know I have a four week old right now, and sleep deprivation can play some serious tricks with your mind. 55% of kids that were injured in the car, the parent or caregiver forgot they were in the car. The other thing that I really like about is it does not require wifi or bluetooth. EVERYTHING requires bluetooth or wifi these days, so it is nice to have something that doesn't. It come with really easy to install directions. It comes with two micro usb cables to recharge it. You can recharge it in your home or in your car if you have a usb port. This is peace of mind you hope to never have to use, but can save the most important thing in your life if you do have a potentially life threatening slip of the mind.

Theraplex® Helps “Beat the Heat”.

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD’S SENSITIVE SKIN COMFORTABLE THIS SUMMER:

Recommended by Dermatologists, Theraplex® Helps “Beat the Heat”.

As balmy summer weather heats up, it is not unusual for people to experience a dramatic increase in perspiration, often causing sensitive skin to “flare up.” This is especially true for children who have eczema. To help keep your child’s skin “cool in the shade,” the experts who make Theraplex® skincare offer summer tips designed to keep sensitivities in check.

·        To help keep your child feeling cooler and drier, avoid the sun when it is at its strongest (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m)

·        Apply a sunscreen SPF 30 or higher. Many pediatric dermatologists recommend physical sunscreens as they may be less irritating than chemical sunscreens.

·        If your child has been in the ocean or pool, rinse chlorine or salt off with a gentle cleanser and immediately apply a moisturizer such as Theraplex ClearLotion.  A light, fast penetrating emollient oil spray, ClearLotion has earned the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. When applied to damp skin, it uniquely wraps around water on the skin's surface, sealing in moisture and replacing the natural oils that water and soap can strip away. After towel drying, ClearLotion leaves skin moisturized for hours without greasiness. And, because ClearLotion is a spray, you will be able to apply it to even the wriggliest of children!

·        Make sure your child drinks plenty of fluids.

·        For added protection and comfort any time of day or night, try Theraplex Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Skin Protectant with natural colloidal oatmeal. It also has earned the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. This enriched moisturizing formula helps to relieve dry skin with superior moisturization that lasts for hours. It soothes your child’s dry, sensitive skin without parabens, fragrances, preservatives, or lanolin.

My Thoughts:

I've had sensitive, dry skin ever since I was a little girl. Finding the proper lotion and skin care regime has always been difficult. Not only do I try to avoid greasy moisturizers, but finding one that actually works all day to provide relief can be a challenge. When I read about Theraplex's ClearLotion I loved the idea. I've always applied my moisturizers after a shower since the pores are open from the heat. I'm a huge fan of natural oils too, so this product was ideal.

Application of the Theraplex ClearLotion is extremely easy and convenient! After a shower or swim, spray the lotion onto your skin. I like to rub it in with my hands to ensure I get every area. It immediately begins soaking in. Then, pat dry your skin with a towel and you're ready to continue your day! The ClearLotion does not stick or transfer to your towel so there's no need to worry about residue. It also does not leave a greasy feeling on the skin either. I began noticing a difference in the texture and softness of my skin after the first application. After a few weeks I can honestly say my skin looks and feels great! No dry bumps or dry patches! I am excited to keep using the Theraplex Clear Lotion.

My Thoughts

My son has not had a fever since he has been born so far, thank god. So I haven't been able to get a true essence of what this device could do in the event of a cold. However I did give it a whirl overnight to try it. This device, above anything else, gives you peace of mind. Instead of having to wake your child when they are sick and need as much rest as possible, you can monitor their temperature through this device and the app that you can download along with it. You do not want to have to wake them and take and uncomfortable rectal temperatures in the middle of the night. It is completely waterproof so you can give them a bath with it as well. It can be used over a 24 hour period of storing temperatures, and reminding you of when you are supposed to give medicine. It has a three year battery life, which is fantastic. It comes with 15 adhesives for attaching them, and you have to change them every 24 hours.
I love the idea of it all being stored and graphed so that you can show the results to your doctor as well. This is great when you are stressed because you have been dealing with a sick crying infant and you cant remember the last time you showered or ate. You can show the doctor accurate information of when you took temperatures and gave medicine. The app is easy to use and convenient. It also comes with a convenient storage case for keeping everything together and portable. This is definitely something I highly recommend for parents. It is such a piece of mind when your child is sick. It is also much safer for your infant, because it is constantly monitoring, so you know the moment their fever spikes. I love this so much.

Documentary Review: Our Daily Dose

They say that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Documentaries this like, from the creator of the film "GMO OMG", are perfect examples of this philosophy in action. Jeremy Seifert takes viewers on an illuminating, yet sometimes depressing, journey into the debate on using Fluoride in drinking water.

Recently, new studies have come out that have led to changes in the common practice. Some places have stopped adding fluoride to their drinking water, while others have reduced the amount. Seifert examines those studies and speaks to a variety of experts about this practice and whether or not it is actually damaging human health, rather than protecting teeth.

I think the most depressing part of the movie for me was seeing how little changes over time. We've seen product after product on the market, that is supposedly safe, that later turns out to be the opposite. Usually, this is accompanied by some deriding the new information and ignoring the implications.  Seifert shows how this has happened with fluoride as well, and offers some data that questions just how effective it even is in protecting teeth.

I would recommend this to people who are interesting in organic, clean living. Also, for those who are interested in learning more about fluoride, and the less-reported side of this issue.

Review: Sleep 'n Sync

Helping Children Achieve Their Goals
The daily stresses in a child’s life are typically caused by test-taking, bullying, anxiety, and many other things. Deborah Hamui, founder and CEO of Sleep'n Sync was highly aware of this information when she created Sleep'n Sync- a revolutionary, audio soundtrack that helps children become more receptive and acquire skills needed to live optimistic, successful lives, while they are sleeping.
Implementing audio with an engineered background soundtrack with binaural beats, Sleep'n Sync synchronizes the child’s brainwaves, creating greater receptiveness while the child is asleep. The program includes audio that should be played on a daily basis while a child is sleeping, during a relatively short period of time. Results are evident in as little as six weeks.
Sleep'n Sync offers programs for many of the challenges that children face every day, such as: test-taking skills, autism, ADHD, bullying, reading comprehension, communication skills and more!
Every child deserves the opportunity to:
  • be happy and satisfied
  • do well at school
  • have strong, healthy relationships
  • be flexible and adaptable
  • feel great about themselves

Sleep and Learning
What does sleep have to do with learning?
Many studies have shown that sleeping good and enough improves our learning, and although the information we learn we take in mostly when we are awake, we need to sleep it out to actually get it soundly learned.
Why? Because sleep participates in the consolidation of our fresh memory.
How? The brain-cell clusters that are activated when we learn when awake are activated again when we sleep, right after that awake period, suggesting that the brain connections that were formed when we were taking information in when awake, are reactivated when we sleep, therefore relearned and stored in the right place.
Research has demonstrated that even a nap in the middle of the day can help us learn, and that we need to sleep enough to function properly and learn effectively when we are awake. When we try to study, let’s say for a test, and we study over and over the same information, but we don’t sleep enough time, we do not get it soundly established in our brain.
And if we pretend to take in too much information before we sleep, through the night or just take a nap, our brain doesn’t get it. Studies have found that our learning worsens over the course of several sessions of learning, when we do not get sleep. This means that we can take in a certain amount of information properly and then we have to give our brain the chance to secure it in our memory through sleep…in other words, we can “burnout” as we study too much information in a session, or series of sessions, with no sleep periods in… So we have to understand that to really learn, we need to get some sleep…enough sleep to get everything properly registered in our head.
Memory and Sleep
How does the brain process the information and experiences that we have during the day at night when we sleep?
At night, our brain does not follow a simple process of input and then storage; our brain has a complex process that involves many interconnections between the many different neurons in different areas that participate in such a process. This process involves taking the sensory information from our most recent experiences, selecting what is relevant, discarding unnecessary information, and associating all this with other stored information from experiences that we lived before, that is, from information that was previously processed and stored in our brain.
In this process that happens when we sleep, relevant information is “filed” and reorganized in the right place so that we are able to retrieve it when we need it. This action of accessing and retrieving information can be a conscious or subconscious action.
Let’s say a girl is having piano lessons, and she needs to learn and practice a certain melody. Her piano instructor showed her the melody, its rhythm, its sound, etc., however the girl has to practice it so that when she plays the melody at the closing piano ceremony of the end of the year, which is coming soon, it comes out perfect. She tries practicing the day her instructor introduced her to the melody, but she is not comfortable with the outcome, so she doesn’t practice the following 3 days. Then, on the 4th day she practices the melody and she performs incredibly well. What happened? She didn’t practice the melody for a few days and then she does great!!!The explanation to this outcome is that her brain did practice the melody when she was sleeping, she rehearsed and practiced playing the melody in her sleep, for 3 nights. So when she played the melody on the piano while awake, it came out really well, she did practice and rehearsed the melody.
Sometimes the time our brain needs to process daytime inputs in longer periods of sleep, and at different stages of sleep. It is known that the different stages of sleep provide the ideal state to process different kinds of input. This means that some input from one experience may be processed in the immediate sleeping period, while other inputs of the same experience may be processed in later sleeping nights.
Sleep'n Sync offers many different programs to help children achieve their goals, including those on bullying, flexibility, anger, test taking, and reading comprehension & communication skills:
Bullying eBook

The goal of Sleep'n Sync is to empower children with the skills needed to overcome their obstacles. For additional information on the product, please visit www.sleepnsync.com.  You can also visit Sleep'n Sync on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube.

Reading Comprehension and Communication Skills
Our Thoughts
We have a child who has both motor and speech apraxia as well as other diagnoses.  At age 6, I'd definitely like him to be more independent, but I know things are hard for him since his body doesn't cooperate with what his brain tells it to do.  We also deal with a lower emotional maturity, so there's been a lot of defiance and hitting on his part - only with me, however - he behaves for most other people.  That behavior has been wearing on me and we needed a change.
Sleep'n Sync offered to send the Flexibility I program, which includes both an audio track and binaural beats soundtrack.  The Flexibility I program is designed to help a child be more, well, flexible - more open to change, trying new things, coping with change and being able to be confident about changes and themselves.  Fear and anxiety can hold a child back - the thought "I can't do it" becomes "I can do it", which later becomes "I will do it" and then "I am doing it!"
This program is incredibly easy to do - after our son fell asleep for the night (you can use it during naps too, if your child naps), all we had to do was hit "play" on the CD player and walk away.  He listens to the program every night while he sleeps. (Sleep'n Sync warns do NOT use while driving!)
Each program comes with a nice little guidebook for using the program and includes helpful tips for helping your child overcome adversity.  The guidebook includes detailed evaluation forms, so you can keep track every week on the progress he or she makes.
While some children may show progress right away, others may take longer. Sleep'n Sync recommends the child listen to the program for at least 6 weeks, or longer. Our son began showing improvement in his ability to do new things and ask for help when needed during the second week.  By the fourth week, we were seeing much more improvement, and now 6 weeks into it, he is showing improvement in almost every area, including behavior. This program has come to us at a serendipitous time; we are increasing his speech, occupational, and physical therapies this year and having him be open to the coming changes is needed in order to accomplish what he wants to do most: talk.
The price is very reasonable and I would recommend Sleep'n Sync to any parent to help guide their child to be more flexible and adaptive!

Our Thoughts

When my husband and I got our FitBits, the kids wanted one for them too. I have been looking to find something that would work for them and not cost us too much seeing we have four kids and they're all wanting one.

The KidFit is a fantastic little tracker for the kids. It's got a snap bracelet that the little tracker fits into which means that it will tighten up on the child's wrist just enough so that it won't be lost. The tracker itself has an LED indicator for when the button is activated for syncing to a smart phone. The best part of the tracker is it is able to be charged using a USB port! This makes it easy to charge on the go or over night.

The KidFit has an App that is compatible with Android and iOS devices. It's easy to download and set up. So far it has worked well and you are able to have multiple trackers on the App to track multiple kids. This is definitely a plus for someone like me who has a few kiddos.

Since we started using the KidFit our kids come running to us right after dinner asking us to sync their bands so they can see who has the most steps. It's become a competition! If you're looking for a tracker, checkout the KidFit. I really think it's worth the $49.99!

Culturelle Probiotic Review

With the holidays here, such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, there are many goodies we're eating, and our kids. All this sugary food and "bad" food can cause many upset stomachs. The last thing you want to worry about while traveling from family member to family member is any gastrointestinal issues.

Probiotics help keep our stomach woes in check and Culturelle provides them for both adults and children alike! Eat well this holiday season with Culturelle to assist you and your family. Most importantly, these probiotics are dairy and gluten free, so even the most health conscious or allergen troubled child can enjoy the health benefits.

Our Thoughts

There are two different probiotic boxes that I received. One box comes in individualized powder packets so that you can mix them into a drink. This type is for children between the ages of one and three, that way you can mask the powder and so they aren't at risk of chewing on one of the chewables. Even though I do not have a child between the ages of one and three, my daughters and I all tested the probiotic packets so we could honestly review it. They were not too keen on the packets, they stated they could feel the powder in the drink when they drank it. I, however, had no issue, especially if it was mixed with juice and drank in one gulp.

Next we tried the chewables, which are for kids older than three. The only bad thing I have to say about the chewables is that Culturelle made them taste too good. My daughters will not stop bugging me about taking their daily probiotic, they would eat them like candy if I allowed them! I tried one myself and it really is good.

When it comes to helping with digestive issues, I can attest that it is helping my daughters, especially my youngest who is more prone to stomach issues. Any time she eats dairy her stomach bothers her, the severity depending on what type of dairy she is eating. Now that she is taking probiotics regularly her stomach issues are not nearly noticeable. Neither of my girls have any gas issues, my youngest doesn't complain of her stomach hurting after dairy and both of my girls are on a more "regular" schedule.

Good for the body and they taste amazing, I think this is a great probiotic brand! Check out their entire website, they have more than just items for kids, they have items for adults too!

Buy your packets here and chewables here, and don't forget to check them out on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest!
