Acorn TV features the DVD debut of Acorn TV Original Series QUEENS OF MYSTERY on October 29, 2019. The “wickedly offbeat” (Parade), contemporary mystery series follows the adventures of three crime-writing sisters and their niece, Detective Sergeant Mattie Stone (Olivia Vinall, The Woman in White). Using their knowledge of crime—both real world and fictional – together they solve murders in the picturesque English region of Wildemarsh. But no matter how many cases they’re able to crack, the unsolved mystery that still haunts the Stone family is that of Mattie’s mother’s disappearance 25 years ago. Queens of Mystery is Acorn TV’s third commission. Created by Julian Unthank (Doc Martin, New Tricks), this lighthearted mystery also stars Sarah Woodward (The Politician’s Husband) as the motherly Aunt Beth, Julie Graham (The Bletchley Circle, Shetland) as rebellious Aunt Cat, and Siobhan Redmond (Alfresco) as the book smart Aunt Jane. This Acorn TV Original earned a 2019 Emmy® nomination for Outstanding Narrator, voiced by 4-time BAFTA Award nominee Juliet Stevenson (Bend It like Beckham, The Hour). The DVD 3-Disc set features 6 episodes (three two-part mysteries), plus bonus behind-the-scenes featurettes and easter eggs ($39.99, Amazon.com).Queens of Mystery premiered exclusively on Acorn TV in April 2019. My Thoughts
Queen of Mystery is a fun series that centers around a group of female sleuths. A new detective named Matilda teams up with her three aunts who write crime novels. Even though her boss tells her to leave them out of it, they keep offering advice on all her cases, including the unsolved disappearance of her mother. This season includes three parts
Murder in the Dark - Matilda investigates a murder at a crime writers convention. The award is buried in his head and part of his newest book is missing.
Death by Vinyl - A group of 80s singers get together for a reunion. Matilda is called in when one of them is strangled with a microphone cord.
Smoke & Mirrors - A theater is adapting one of Matilda's aunt's books. When one of the cast is killed with a sandbag, Matilda must uncover the killer.
I really enjoyed this series. The mysteries are great, but aren't as violent as most crime shows. It's a fun twist, and the aunts make it humorous. I hope to see this show come back for a second season. If you want to order a copy of this fun DVD series, you can find it online at Amazon or on Acorn Media.
