Based on the acclaimed novels by Edward St. Aubyn, the five-part series tracks Patrick Melrose (Benedict CumberbatchSherlock, Doctor Strange) from a privileged but deeply traumatic childhood in the South of France, through severe substance abuse in his twenties in New York and, ultimately, toward recovery back home in Britain. Benedict Cumberbatch delivers a powerhouse performance as English aristocrat Patrick Melrose in this “devastating and brilliant adaptation” (The Economist) of the novels by Edward St Aubyn. Chronicling the hilarious highs and devastating lows of his tumultuous life, this blackly humorous drama follows Patrick from his childhood trauma at the hands of an abusive father (Hugo WeavingThe Lord of the Rings films, The Matrix) and neglectful mother (Jennifer Jason LeighThe Hateful Eight), to the peak of his heroin addiction, and his attempts to stay sober and support his family.

“Beautifully acted by an exceptional cast” (CNN.com), it also stars Blythe Danner (Meet the Parents), Allison Williams (Get Out), Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife, Partners in Crime), and Indira Varma (Game of Thrones).

My Thoughts

Patrick Melrose is an adaption of a popular novel. The mini-series centers around an aristocrat and his crazy lifestyle including addiction and the road to recovery. We also learn about tragedies he  suffered in his childhood that lead to all his struggles. The set includes five episodes :

Bad News - Patrick has to collect his father's ashes. He is in the throes of addiction and things spiral out of control

Never Mind - We learn about the horrors Patrick faces when he is just a child

Some Hope- Now in recovery, Patrick attends a big social event and hopes he can stay sober

Mother's Milk - The mother donates her home to a odd charity instead of giving it to her son

At Last- Patrick comes back for his mother's funeral and is forced to face his past. Will it effect his sobriety?

This was a truly excellent mini series that gives you a glimpse into the life of modern aristocrats. It's both darkly humorous and dramatic, and so exciting, you'll want to watch all the episodes back to back. The stellar cast did an awesome job bringing the characters to life, and it gives  you a realistic look at addiction.  If you want to order this fantastic blue-ray set, its available online at Acorn Media and on Amazon.
