DVD Review: BARBARY COAST

A must-see for fans of classic TV, Barbary Coast makes its long-awaited DVD debut on June 3, 2014 from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. Golden Globe® winner William Shatner (Star Trek, Boston Legal) stars as Jeff Cable, an undercover agent patrolling the wild streets of 1880s San Francisco. Broadcast on ABC during the 1970s and modeled after the original Mission Impossible, Barbary Coast features an enthralling Western tale of post–Gold Rush California wherein corruption, greed, and violence reign supreme in this bustling slice of life filled with casinos and saloons. In his first multi-episode TV series after Star Trek, Shatner polices the rough and tumble Barbary Coast, cracking down on the numerous criminals who have made a home there, with the help of a few (occasionally unwilling) friends and several amusing disguises. The DVD 4-Disc set includes the pilot movie and 13 episodes ($59.99, AcornOnline.com).

Even top public officials can’t be trusted, so Cable weaves elaborate ruses to uncover the Barbary Coast’s many plots. He also relies on the slick but beleaguered Cash Conover (Doug McClure, The Virginian), proprietor of the Golden Gate Casino. Conover reluctantly puts his business and well-being on the line for Cable time and again. The charismatic pair often find the cards stacked against them, but that doesn’t stop them from having a rollicking good time as they police a town mired in vigilante justice. Also starring Richard Kiel (The Spy Who Loved Me, Happy Gilmore), this Emmy®-nominated series is a playful take on traditional Westerns with a terrific cast.

My Thoughts

Barbary Coast  is a cowboy series complete with saloons, steam engines, gun fire, and ten-gallon hats. The series follows Jeff Cable, an undercover agent in San Francisco in the 1880's looking to crack down on crime. It gives a new spin to the typical cowboy show of its time because William Shatner becomes a master of disguise. The series only lasted for one season and this 4 disc set includes all 13 episodes as well as the movie pilot. Episodes include:

FUNNY MONEY: Cable is mistaken for a known counterfeiter and finds the tables turned when the bad guys are hunting him down.

CRAZY CATS: The theft of valuable Chines Jade could create an international crisis.

JESSE WHO?: Cable is on the look out for Jess James.

THE BALLAD OF REDWING JAIL: A horse thief leaves behind buried treasure and the team must find it.

GUNS FOR A QUEEN: Cable goes undercover to locate stolen guns from a ship that went down.

IRISH LUCK: Cable sets out to stop the assassination of a local Irishman.

SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE: Cable disguises himself as a gypsy to scare off a thief.

AN IRON-CLAD PLAN: Cable must recover stolen submarine plans.

ARSON AND OLD LACE: A arsonist is on the loose and Cable teams up with the female fire chief to bring him down.

SHARKS EAT SHARKS: Two con men face off with Cable in the middle of it.

THE DAY CABLE WAS HANGED: Cable goes after the possible murderer of Abraham Lincoln.

MARY HAD MORE THAN A LITTLE: Cable falls for the family member of a friend.

THE DAWSON MARKER: The team searches for stolen confederate money.

I know this was a short-lived series, but I had no idea what William Shatner had ever been in a Western. It was interesting to see him take on a role so different from Captain Kirk.  It was a fun take on Western's and I'm glad I got a chance to watch it. It's a shame it only lasted for one season because it was a humorous series that I would've liked to have seen more of.

If you'd like to grab a copy of this fun western series for yourself, it's available on Acorn for only $59.99.

I recognize the characters in the western though I don't know their names. They were in a lot of westerns so I know I would love this show. Thanks for sharing. Now I know what to look for as to movies name. Rita Spratlen
