Women make up less than a quarter of STEM professionals in the United States, and numbers are even lower for women of color. But a growing group of researchers is exposing longstanding discrimination and making science more inclusive.
Science has provided humanity with invaluable technologies, lifesaving medicines and awe-inspiring discoveries. But there is also a dark reality to the field: gender and racial discrimination that have persisted for generations. Women make up less than a quarter of STEM professionals in the United States, and numbers are even lower for women of color. But there is a growing group of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists, exposing longstanding discrimination and leading the way in making science more inclusive. A biologist, a chemist and a geologist lead viewers on a journey through their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from outright harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, scientific visionaries, including social scientists, neuroscientists and psychologists, provide New Perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable and open to all.
My Thoughts
Picture a Scientist is the story of woman who are fighting for a place in the scientific world. Gender equality is a problem in every career, but female scientists really get the cold shoulder from their male counterparts. This documentary follows some of the real women making waves in their field. Follow a biologist, a chemist and a geologist through their daily process and see the strides they're making for world and their fellow women.
If you want to learn about the struggle for quality in the science world, this is an excellent lesson. If you want to grab a copy of this educational documentary for yourself, you can find it online at PBS.org or Amazon.

As an advocate for education, I strongly believe in the power of learning and self-discovery. Education provides the tools for personal growth and empowers individuals to achieve their goals. However, it's important to remember that education is a collaborative effort. You can rely on others to "write my outline for me," and embrace the process of critical thinking, research, and writing to develop our own outlines, fostering a deeper understanding and ownership of knowledge.
