Poetry in America, Season 2

Poets, public figures, and members of various communities join series creator Elisa New to engage in intimate readings of a single American poem. Each episode mixes lively discussion with archival materials, location footage, and vivid animation. The series offers audiences an immersive and accessible experience in reading poems that touch on many aspects of American life, past and present.

These poems include: Urban Love Poem – Marilyn Chin, One Art – Elizabeth Bishop, The Fish – Marianne Moore, This Your Home Now – Mark Doty, Finishing the Hat – Stephen Sondheim, You and I Are Disappearing – Yusef Komunyakaa, This Is Just to Say – William Carlos Williams, and Leaves of Grass – Walt Whitman.

My Thoughts

Poetry in America is a documentary that delves into the often obscure world of American poetry. There are beautiful readings as well as deep discussions. Some of the poems that are analyzed include:

Urban Love Poem - Marilyn Chin
One Art - Elizabeth Bishop
The Fish - Marianne Moorre
This Is Your Home Now - Mark Doty
Finishing the Hat - Stephen Sondheim
You and I Are Disappearing - Yusef Komunyakaa
This is Just to Say - William Carlos Williams
Leaves of Grass - Walk Whitman

This is an excellent DVD that helps bring to light the art of poetry -- something that has sadly fallen to the wayside in recent years. It's a great way to introduce people to a few new writers. If you want to purchase a copy of this DVD for yourself, you can find it online at PBS.org or on Amazon.
