When struggling rapper Coco (Azealia Banks) enrolls in a poetry class, she thinks her rhymes will impress her teacher, Professor Dixon (Jill Scott). Instead, Dixon challenges Coco to seek real meaning in her lyrics, setting her on a journey of discovery that takes her through rap clubs and poetry slams, leading her to find her true voice — and true love — in this uplifting movie costarring Lucien Laviscount and Common.
My Thoughts
Love Beats Rhymes is a wonderful drama that centers around a young rapper named Coco. She longs to be a famous rapper, but her teacher doesn't think her lyrics are quite good enough and encourages her to try harder. Though at first this is a blow to her ego, she goes out in search of the perfect lyrics by visiting clubs and poetry slams. She learns to find true meaning in her words, and learns quite a bit about herself. This gives her the chance to impress her teacher, and along the way, she might find love as well.

This is a great film that gives us an up-close and personal look into the world of rap music. Though rap has never been my favorite genre of music, this movie made me see it is a whole different light. There really is a beauty behind the rhymes. It's another form of poetry with a modern spin on it. The characters in this movie were endearing and the story line held my interest. I would definitely recommend it to fans of rap or anyone who enjoys an inspirational film with a little romance.
