Review: Poetry For Young People Series

National Poetry Month is in April! There is nothing better than reading to your children, and better yet? Reading them timeless poetry classics! We have been blessed with great poets such as, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Lewis Carroll just to name a few!

I am a huge lover of poetry and enjoyed our block of poetry writing in high school. And found writing poetry very relaxing and really helped to encourage creative thinking. Now with kids, I am so thrilled to have received these books so that they may know some of these great authors, and foster their love of reading and poetry!
African American Poetry:
A beautiful way to introduce your child to several different poets! Kids everywhere can benefit from this book, as we get a closer look into history and how circumstances have influenced these 27 poets!

Robert Frost: A timeless, and beautiful poet, this collection encompasses all of Robert Frost! Poignant and remarkable, you are taken and placed into each poem. Frost calls on all of your literary senses to help you see and feel all of his lines. My favorite has always been "The Road Not Taken."
Excerpt:
To the Thawing Wind

First the poem calls to the thawing wind, asking it to bring an end to winter and to usher in spring. But soon it changes, as we learn that the speaker is also a poet. By the end he is asking the wind to bring him inspiration for his poetry, to bring him and it new life outdoors.

Come with rain, O loud Southwester!
Bring the singer, bring the nester;
Give the buried flower a dream;
Make the settled snowbank steam;
Find the brown beneath the white;
But whate’er you do tonight,
Bathe my window, make it flow,
Melt it as the ice will go;
Melt the glass and leave the sticks
Like a hermit’s crucifix;
Burst into my narrow stall;
Swing the picture on the wall;
Run the rattling pages o’er;
Scatter poems on the floor;
Turn the poet out of door.

Langston Hughes: A wonderful literary work of art from poet Langston Hughes. A great man, who invented the "jazzy poetry" style was truly a man before his time! He often wrote dated poems about how the "negro" was or wasn't advancing. This collection of poems depicts a time when the African American was still oppressed, and tells the stories of heartache and triumph.

These are wonderful books for a school teacher and any child that is interested in the art of poetry! A great way to open the communication lines not only for the African American poets but for life in general! I loved these books, and will read them to my children for years to come!
