Springhill Series One DVD Review

***Complimentary copy received in exchange for an honest review***

Mixing the delicious drama of a soap with mysterious, supernatural elements, Springhill, Series 1 debuts on DVD from Acorn on June 18, 2013. The series is created by Paul Abbott (Shameless, State of Play, Cracker) and Frank Cottrell Boyce, veterans of Britain’s Coronation Street, and buoyed by strong screenwriters including Russell T. Davies (Doctor Who, Queer as Folk). Springhill is like a cross between Twin Peaks and EastEnders as it follows the Freemans family’s shocking revelations and electrifying confrontations, with few taboos left untouched. Broadcast in 1996-1997 on the Sky One satellite channel and later on Channel 4 in the U.K., the program has not aired in the U.S. The DVD 4-Disc set contains the first 26 episodes ($59.99, AcornOnline.com).

Liz and Jack Freeman have been happily married for almost two decades, tending to their Liverpool home and raising five boisterous children. But their lives are thrown into turmoil with the unwelcome arrival of Eva Morrigan, a vengeful woman who harbors the family’s darkest secrets. Eva is hell-bent on getting even with Liz, which drives the once-cheerful clan into chaos.

My Thoughts

Springhill is pretty much a British Soap Opera and its certainly dramatically delicious. This show has it all. There are elements are intrigue, a little shady romance, and even some paranormal elements to make things spooky. The Springhills are a family with a lot of secrets. They are raising their five children and everything is great until the mysterious Eva moves in. Its obvious they don't really want her around but they're afraid to turn her away. Like most soap opera families, there is a lot of turmoil between them and every one is out for themselves. Though at some points, its gets a little corny and the acting can be over the top, like any other soap opera, Springhill, its addicting and hard to stop watching. Who is Eva really? What does she wants from the Freemans? And will everyone survive until season 2?

If you want to get a little supernatural drama, grab your copy of Springhill Series One from Acorn Media for only $59.99.
