Brimming with romance, action, and period atmosphere, this Emmy®-Award winning drama stars Anthony Andrews (Brideshead Revisited), Jane Seymour (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman) and Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings, X-Men). The tale follows a dashing young Englishman who masks his identity to save French aristocrats during the chaotic days of the French Revolution. Broadcast on CBS in the 1980s, the miniseries won the Emmy® Award for Outstanding Costume Design and was nominated for Outstanding Drama Special and Art Direction.
The tumbrels roll through the streets of Paris, carrying enemies of the new French Republic to their appointments with “Madame Guillotine.” But to the revolutionaries’ fury, more than a few of France’s hated aristocrats have escaped execution thanks to the actions of a dashing young Englishman known as the Scarlet Pimpernel (Anthony Andrews, Brideshead Revisited).
One aristocrat interests him above all the rest, the beautiful Marguerite St. Just (Jane Seymour, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman). In his pursuit of Marguerite, he has a dangerous rival, Citizen Chauvelin (Ian McKellen, The Lord of the Rings, X-Men)—a revolutionary leader charged with tracking down the elusive Pimpernel.

My Thoughts
I have long been a fan of Jane Seymour and the Scarlet Pimpernel is one of my favorite films. Originally airing in the 80s, this film won several awards and its no surprise. This movie offers something for everyone, from sword fights to romance. There is political intrigue and even some humor. The story revolves around the Scarlet Pimpernel, an undercover hero who makes it his duty to save aristocrats from the guillotine after the revolution. Sir Percy is the alter ego of the Pimpernel, and a man few would suspect since he pokes fun at this own daring feats. However, he finds himself in more trouble then he imagined when he falls for the same beautiful lady as the leader of the head hunters. This British drama offers more than just a great film. There are beautiful costumes and historical settings that make you feel as though you stepped back in time. The action is amazing and you could almost look on this as the French version of Zorro or even an old world caped crusader. Definitely a wonderful film rich in history and talent.
