Dirk Gently DVD Review

***Complimentary product received in exchange for an honest review***

In the vein of Monk and Psych, and based on the novels by beloved author Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), Dirk Gently arrives to DVD from Acorn on April 2, 2013. Broadcast on BBC in 2010 and 2012 and available to U.S. audiences for the first time with its DVD release, this four-part dramedy stars Stephen Mangan (starring opposite Matt LeBlanc on Episodes) as Dirk Gently, a perpetually insolvent yet uncommonly talented holistic detective. The series follows the affably played detective as he spins coincidences into explanations for seemingly unsolvable mysteries. Although he’s regarded as a mere con man by some, Dirk often delivers astonishing results with his unusual tactics. This rollicking adaptation also features Helen Baxendale (Friends, Kidnap and Ransom), Lisa Jackson (Daniel Deronda), Jason Watkins (Being Human), and Bill Paterson (Traffik). The DVD 2-Disc Set includes the pilot and the first three episodes ($39.99, AcornOnline.com).

Meet Dirk Gently. He’s poorly dressed, perpetually insolvent …and uncommonly good at solving mysteries. As proprietor of the Holistic Detective Agency, Dirk follows methods that are, in his own words, “based on an almost unswerving belief in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things.” Dirk is aided—and frequently irritated—by his hapless assistant, Richard MacDuff (Darren Boyd, Holy Flying Circus). Together, they tackle cases ranging from a missing cat to a murder that may involve the Pentagon.

My Thoughts

Dirk Gently brings you the light side of the law. This slovenly detective will offer up lots of laughs with his new age approach to crime solving. He doesn't go the normal route with his investigations, but instead trusts the universe will provide the answers, and though his method might seem shoddy, he always seems to come out on top.  Dirk and his often baffled partner Richard do not discriminate and take on cases as minor as missing pets or as intense as espionage. This disk contains four hilarious episodes and each one left me wondering how it could be so funny but still leave me guessing until the very end. This series is definitely British comedy at its best.
