Summer Camp Snack Ideas from Spork Foods

School is almost out for summer and kids will be heading off to camp soon! Typically you might worry that your they won’t make healthy choices while they’re away from home, but this year, you can send them off with healthy snack options to keep their nutrition in check. Heather Goldberg and Jenny Engel of Spork Foods have put together their top 5 list of kid-friendly summer camp snacks. See their superstar snack recommendations below.

Kid’s Summer Camp Snack Ideas- by Heather and Jenny- Sisters and Owners of Spork Foods

1)    Pistachio Chewy Bites - This completely nutritious snack is made of protein packed pistachios, delicious dried cranberries, and agave nectar. This unique flavor combination is the perfect snack for kids any time of day. The convenient, individually wrapped bites are easy to toss into your child’s snack stash and send them off! Steal one for yourself and eat it on the way to work while you’re at it!

2)    Fruit Leathers - Fruit leathers have come a long way since we were kids. They’re packed with vitamins and minerals, yet disguised in a fun-to-eat snack! Stretch Island Fruit is our favorite! The grab-and-go aspect is always great too, just in case your little one gets hungry on the bus. We guarantee this snack won’t be traded come the lunch hour!

3)    Popcorn- Corn has more nutrition in it than one might think! It’s actually incredibly high in antioxidants and is fun to eat, a win-win for parents and kids. Earth Balance makes a new, non-dairy aged white cheddar popcorn that’s non-GMO and very tasty. There is a reason corn has been a food staple for thousands of years…it’s healthy and delicious!

4)    A Good Old Fashion Banana- Let’s face it, this fruit is the original to-go snack. A banana’s thick skin acts as natural tupperware, it’s loaded with low glycemic carbs, and will give your kids the energy they need to run around all day. If endurance athletes can lean on bananas for nutrition, surely we can too.

5)    Kale Chips- Kids like kale these days (lucky for us). What an incredible alternative to potato chips and other fried foods! Kale Chips are absolutely jam-packed with vitamin K which builds bone mass in the body. This treat will provide the crunch they love and the nutrients you love for our developing kids to eat!  One of our favorite companies is Just Pure Foods, because all of the products are organic, made with love and taste amazing.

-Tips from Jenny Engel and Heather Goldberg of Spork Foods.

My Thoughts

We got to test out the Pistachio Chewy Bites and they are really awesome. Each one is a delicious blend of two of my favorite things: pistachios and cranberries. These nuts and berries are merged together into a mini bar. They are a chewy and delicious combination of salty and sweet that is a mouth watering concoction both kids and adults can enjoy.

Each Pistachio Chewy Bite comes in its own individual package to ensure freshness. This makes them a great snack when you're on the go or to toss in school lunch boxes. In addition to tasting great, they are packed with protein and fiber. Best of all, they are a 100% natural choice, that is gluten free, dairy free, GMO free, and vegan friendly.

Pistachio Chewy bites are available in major grocery store chains across the country such as: Fairway, Shoprite, A&P, Roundy’s, HEB, Safeway, Ingles, Gelson’s, King Kullen, Earth Fare, Price Chopper, Wegmans, Save Mart, Lucky, Hy-Vee, Shop n’ Save, etc.  They are also available online at Amazon.com and Puritan.com.
Pricing: 6-Pack $5.99 and 16-Pack $12.50

My Non GMO Box - The Subscription Box that is GMO Free!

One of my children is allergic to gluten. This has presented a lot of problems because we don't want to leave him out or treat him differently. So we have to buy gluten free for  everyone. It was a big change for all of us.  When you buy gluten fee products, they are more expensive than most store brands, so you want to make sure it's worth the purchase price before you buy.  My Non GMO Box offers a unique subscription service that allows you to sample a variety of unique gluten-free, non GMO products each month. For as little as $14.99 a month, a new selection gets shipped right to your door, allowing you to sample some of the best gluten-free products on the market and see which ones you enjoy the most.

This month's box was filled with tons of great items. There were chips, fruit snacks, teas and more.  Here's a little run down of what we got to try:

Nacho Bean & Rice Chips
Two Leaves and a Bud Tea Company Whole Leaf Organic Tea Sampler
Tasty Brand Organic Wild Berry Fruit Snacks
Nature's Path Dark Chocolate Chip Bar

 All Natural Honey Sunflower Butter
Chocolate Mint Honey Pattie

Some of the brands I received I was familiar with and a few I've even reviewed on this blog, but the flavors were varieties I hadn't had a chance to try yet. Other brands I had never heard of before getting my My Non GMO Box, but they were all awesome!

If you're looking to try out some new snacks that you can feel good about giving to your family and you want to make healthy choices without a lot of guess work, you should definitely give My Non GMO Box a try. Getting one of these boxes in the mail makes it feel like Christmas every month! To learn more about My Non GMO Box and all they have to offer, you can visit their website. Somersault Snacks Review

***Product was received for free in exchange for an honest review.***

Somersault Snack Co., is a natural food start-up based in Sausalito, CA. What are Somersaults? They’re a scrumptious nut-free sunflower seed snack with all the protein and half the fat of almonds. As our name suggests, our packaging is fun, featuring different characters symbolizing each flavor which kids love, and they’re healthy, which parents also love! An alternative to unwholesome snack foods that can give busy moms and their kids energy in bite size form. Our sweetest flavors Cinnamon Crunch and Dutch Cocoa only have 7 and 4g of sugar per serving, so there are no sugar highs or crashes to worry about, just sustained energy.

1 oz bags are great for lunchboxes, and the 6 oz resealable pouches are great for storing in the car, ready for whenever a snack attack strikes.

We’ve recently had our top two flavors – Pacific Sea Salt and Cinnamon Crunch- certified as GMO free by the NonGMO Project. In other news, your readers can now purchase nationally at Target and Costco!

Our five flavors include Pacific Sea Salt, Cinnamon Crunch, Salty Pepper, Dutch Cocoa and Santa Fe Salsa.

Our Thoughts

This really is a great snack option for being on the go, however, I personally keep thinking of hiking when I take a bite from one of these. I think this would be an awesome snack to bring along with you while you are out and about on a nature hike, not just for long car rides. Protein and fiber are sure to keep you feeling full and tie you over for your next meal.

As for the flavors and texture, I like the uniqueness ofof SomerSaults snacks. Little bite sized circles, you can taste the sunflower seeds (which I love) and the flavors are very distinct. I was not too impressed with the Dutch Cocoa or the Sea Salt. The Cocoa has a very tiny cocoa flavor to it but mainly tastes like the sunflower seeds. It would be great for a light "dessert" snack, but when I eat cocoa flavored items, I want to taste the cocoa! As for the Sea Salt, it was just a bit too salty for me, just not my personal taste, but others may love it.

By far, my aboslute favorite (and my kids') was the Cinnamon. Oh my word, they tasted just like roasted almonds in the winter time! These were the first to go, loved them so much, they just tasted amazing. A perfect dessert snack!!

The Salty Pepper was surprisingly good. I was a bit apprehensive of trying them after the Sea Salt but I actually like the pepper flavor. It works well in place of regular chips and could easily be eaten with a nice juicy burger in my opinion. The Santa Fe were just as surprisingly tasty and reminiscent of a Doritos chip. A tasty snack all on their own.

Healthy, tasty, flavorful snacks, surely something for each family member! Not to mention, how cute is the picture on the packages?!
