Governor, The: The Complete Collection

Two-time Academy Award nominee Janet McTeer (Damages, The Honourable Woman) stars in this gritty prison drama by acclaimed British crime writer Lynda La Plante (Prime Suspect, The Commander). After a disastrous riot at Barfield Prison, Helen Hewitt (McTeer) helps investigate an inmate’s suspicious death. When the governor of Barfield is subsequently ousted, Helen takes the job, becoming the youngest woman in charge of an all-male prison. Determined to clean up the place, she causes resentment among both prisoners and officers with her new ideas and no-nonsense attitude. Despite the odds stacked against her, Helen works tirelessly to earn the respect she deserves. With shocking plots and pointed social commentary, The Governor delivers a brutal, unflinching look at prison life and the challenges that women in power confront.

The excellent cast also includes Academy Award nominee Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda), Eamonn Walker (Chicago Fire, Oz), Derek Martin (EastEnders), Ron Donachie (Game of Thrones), and Golden Globe winner Idris Elba (Luther, Thor films).

My Thoughts

The Governor is an exciting drama series that is set inside a prison. It centers around Helen Hewitt who is sent to the prison to investigate the death of one of the inmates. She later takes over as the governor of the prison after the old one is fired. She become the youngest woman to ever manage an all male prison. The series includes twelve exciting episodes.

Season 1

1- A prisoner is killed during a riot and Helen investigates. Helen takes the job as the governor.

2- Helen is unprepared for questions during a television interview. Plus, a prisoner tries to escape, one of the cells are robbed, and a rich inmate joins the prison crew.

3- The prison gets two new inmates. One has a violent past and one is terrified. Helen is placed under review after the breakout.

4- Several prisoners go on trial for a hanging. Helen is called as a witness.

5 - Helen hires new officers, and two female employees. Alan is granted home leave, but he lied about being married.

6- Tragedy strikes just as Helen is expecting a visit from headquarters. Psychologist Maureen is getting too close to Norman. Anthony is plotting a hit.

Season 2

1-Helen is no longer governor. She is now doing hostage research, and gets called back to the prison during a hostage situation.

2- Helen leads the investigation into the hostage situation. No one likes the new governor.

3- Helen is back as governor. Snoopy's sentence is extended.

4 - The officer's aren't sure its good idea to take the prisoners phones. The prisoners practice for a musical.

5- Helen moves Braithwaite to a regular cell. Morgan has to go to the hostage inquiry. Snoopy gets transferred out of protective custody.

6- Helen takes over the musical. The inmates plan an escape.

I really enjoyed this series, and I'm a little disappointed that it's already over. There are lots of twists and turns, and I always enjoy a show that features a strong female lead.  I would have loved to see it extended for a few more seasons. However, the twelve episodes that are available are awesome and won't leave you disappointed.  If you want to purchase this DVD set for yourself, you can find it online at Acorn Media or on Amazon.

Thanks for sharing information on this series. It sounds amazing and has some fabulous actors in it. I adored Edris Elba as Stringer Bell in The Wire and would watch anything he is in.
