DVD Review: The Saint, Set 1

Based on the bestselling, long-running novel series by Leslie Charteris, The Saint debuts on DVD on August 5, 2014 from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. The Saint follows the adventures of Simon Templar, played by British actor Simon Dutton (Dangerous Beauty, By the Sword Divided), as a criminal who targets only evildoers. Produced in 1989, this series of TV movies had limited broadcast in the U.S. through syndication to independent commercial stations, therefore this DVD set is the first opportunity for most U.S. viewers to watch this version of the timeless character. The DVD 3-disc set includes three feature-length movies, each with an adventure that British drama fans are sure to enjoy ($49.99, AcornOnline.com).

Simon Templar – known as the Saint from his initials– is a suave, sophisticated super-sleuth with a taste for theft and beautiful women. He lives on both sides of the law, courting danger with a smile. Women adore him, criminals fear him, and the police are often two steps behind him.

Filmed in exotic locations around the world, these three adventures find the Saint chasing kidnappers, trapping murderers, and saving an old flame’s father from a financial scam, all while staying impeccably dressed. Guest stars include Gayle Hunnicut, John Astin, Rebecca Gilling, and Ed Devereaux.

Includes: The Brazilian Connection, The Blue Dulac, and Fear in Fun Park.

Leslie Charteris’s bestselling novel series was a cultural touchstone that ran from 1928 to 1963. Novels have spawned multiple popular adaptations, including a ‘60s television program with Roger Moore, a 1990s feature film starring Val Kilmer, and this series of TV movies from the late 1980s. Simon Dutton played the character in six TV movies.

My Thoughts

The Saint is a tale of a modern day Robin Hood who steals from the evil rich and has a thing for pretty women. Based off the best selling novels, this series brings us intrigue, danger, and a handsome rogue who faces it all with a smile. Set one includes three exciting episodes including:

The Brazilian Connection- Simon Templar puts his own plans on hold to bring down a international crime ring involving the abduction of infants.

The Blue Dulac - Two of Simon's friends are killed by a bomb in Paris and Simon travels there to extract his own unique brand of revenge while posing as a jewel thief.

Fear in The Fun Park - Simon travels to Syndey when a friend's daughter is abducted. He runs into an old flame and discovers that young girls are being kidnapped and  used as slaves.

This exciting series features a suburb cast, beautiful backdrops and unique story-lines. If you want to pick up a copy of this great series, The Saint, Set 1 available on Acorn Media for only $49.99 or you can grab a copy on Amazon.

How fun! I love when they take old classics (their message), and put a spin on them to make a new movie.
