Our Thoughts
We recently purchased a rural property and plan to build a new home on it.  In the meantime, we'd like to leave some possessions for property maintenance there on the property and want to keep those items secure. The Master Lock Portable Key Safe is roomy enough to keep all our necessary keys safe, without us having to hand off a key ring to whoever will be working on it and then have to get that key ring back. 

The Portable Key Safe has this vinyl coated exterior case to prevent scratches - it is very smooth to the touch, with no sharp edges.  You'd have to work pretty hard to be able to scratch a door with this!  It's also meant to keep the Key Safe, safe from the elements.

First up, you open it with the grips on the sides of the protective case.  There are some instructions shown on the inside of the case - as near as I can figure out, they are for if you fat-finger your code - just slide the C button down (bottom center) to reset, then punch in your code again to open the unit.  The unit comes fully open-able, so you then set your own code. You can choose up to 12 letters and/or numbers for your code.

Here you can see the inside - nice and roomy!  There are directions imprinted in the black plastic for the way the little yellow arrows go for setting your own code.  Change the arrows using the sequence for the code you choose, and you're done!  You'll need to enter the code both to open the unit, and to close the unit. It's easy to change the code, too.

My husband says this is such a well made, sturdy key safe that if we weren't going to be using it, he'd like to take a 30.06 to it and see if he could destroy it or not!  Men.  Gotta love 'em!  Always wanting to blow stuff up. :)

My Thoughts

I received a Master Lock Small Safe - 5900D to review. My husband travels a lot for work and this safe has given him an added feeling of security when leaving personal belongings in his hotel room.

The safe is small and easily fits in a suitcase or work bag, not taking up much room. It easily fits a phone and wallet, with a bit of space left to add a few other smaller items.

Setting and changing the code on the safe was easy. The numbers spin easy and the buttons to open the safe were easy to press and didn't require much pressure.

A must have for anyone who is traveling or while on a family vacation. The cord that goes around a table legs or something else, was thick and wouldn't be able to be cut with typical scissors, so you can leave it with piece of mind the average person won't run off with it.

 My Thoughts

No matter what your age, it's a good idea to have a Sentry Safe in your home. It protects your valuable papers from a variety of threats. Flooding, fire, or theft-- the sentry safe could save some of your important treasures if any of these disasters strike. Personally, I don't often keep cash in the house (that's play money in the safe) and most of my jewelry is silver, so  it's not worth that much, but I still have some things that I like to store in my safe. Birth certificates, car titles social security cards--these things are a hassle to replace so it's best to keep them safe. We also have a few valuable collectibles that we can store in there. And I always keep my USB drives in a fireproof box. Then all my family photos and important online documents are safe as well.

The Sentry Safe is a great investment for anyone who has anything special to store. It's very sturdy and also extremely heavy. If someone breaks into your house, they aren't going to be able to run down the street with this, that's for sure. Yet, it's also compact. I have a pair of filing cabinets I'm putting on top of it, which helps conserve space. Inside, there is plenty of room. There's even an adjustable  shelf to help keep things organized and a little tray on the door for smaller items.

The bolts that hold this thing closed are practically indestructible. It's not going to be easy to get into this safe without the combination. Using your safe is simple too. The lock combination works pretty much the same as any other. There are three numbers to unlock it, which can be found inside the manual. Just make sure you keep that manual if you don't have a good memory because without it, you aren't getting back in.  I just love this safe. I feel way more secure having it in my home.

This lock will see years of use with us.  We use MasterLock locks (including the 5D) on toolboxes, outbuildings, even on our boat!  I think my favorite of all their many lock options, is the "keyed alike" option. There's a long story involving the vacation from hell, where one of our problems was solved with "keyed alike" MasterLocks.  Prior to that, I didn't know you could buy them keyed alike, we'd always purchased individual locks as needed.
