The Mysteries of Mental Illness DVD

Explore the evolution in understanding, and the dramatic attempts across generations, to unravel the difficult questions surrounding mental illness people have grappled with throughout history: What causes it? And how is it best treated?

Episode 1 – Evil or Illness?: Examine ancient conceptions of mental illness and the establishment of psychiatry. Hear contemporary stories of people living with mental illness, including an aspiring astrophysicist with schizophrenia and an Olympics-bound boxer with OCD.

Episode 2 – Who's Normal?: Trace efforts to develop guidelines for diagnosing mental illness rooted in empirical science rather than dogma. Explore how science and societal factors are deeply entwined with shifting definitions of mental health and mental illness.

Episode 3 – The Rise and Fall of the Asylum: Follow the origin and downfall of mental asylums in the U.S. Glimpse inside Cook County prison, the nation's largest unintended mental health facility, meet the detainees in their care, and see the challenges they face both inside and out.

Episode 4 – The New Frontiers: Explore today's most cutting-edge treatments, based on the latest understanding of mental illness, through profiles of patients undergoing deep brain stimulation surgery, infusions of ketamine and modern electro-convulsive therapy.

My Thoughts

Mental Illness is often painted in a negative light, and it's something that needs to be changed. In this documentary, the stigmas around mental illness are dismantled. The series follows several people who have been diagnosed with conditions including schizophrenia. It also gives you an inside look inside a mental health facility and how they've changed over the years.

Mental Illness is something that needs to be talked about more often, and this documentary helps us to better understand the effect it has on the lives on those who are dealing with mental illness. If you'd like to grab a copy of this informative DVD, you can find it  in stores nationwide or online at PBS.org or Amazon.

I feel like I need to take care of my mental health. I can’t say that I have any serious problems, but in general I began to get tired faster and more strongly.

When my mom's friend told us that her daughter had become a lesbian, we were very surprised. She had never talked about it before

As I watched this film, I also thought that I have superpowers, but this is not so))) I believe that a psychic is a good specialist, whom you should rely on in difficult situations in life. I found information about how much do psychics cost when I really needed good advice. I can say that it definitely works, but it all depends on how you feel about it and what kind of psychic is working with you.
