Freaky Friday: A New Musical on Disney DVD

A contemporary musical update of the classic comedic story, "Freaky Friday” is based on Disney Theatrical Productions' stage adaptation of the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers. Sixteen-year-old Ellie Blake and her uber-organized mom Katherine, are constantly at odds about Ellie's messy room, sloppy clothes and seemingly careless attitude. Ellie really misses her dad who passed away a few years ago; she bickers with her younger brother and argues with Katherine who's getting ready to marry her fiancé, Mike – tomorrow.  As mother and daughter quarrel, they accidentally break the treasured hourglass given to Ellie by her father and then, suddenly, they magically switch bodies. Now, Ellie and Katherine must trade places at work and at school, and, during one crazy day, they'll learn to understand and appreciate each other.

My Thoughts

Freaky Friday is a fun story about a teenage girl and her mom. The two are struggling to deal with each other, and can't seem to see eye-to-eye. Ellie is messy while Katherine is organized. Ellie has a wild side Katherine can't understand and Ellie resents when her mother tries to reel her in. To make matters worse, Katherine is about to get married, but Ellie is having a hard time with it because she feels like her father, who passed away, is being replaced. After they break an hourglass that was a gift from her dad, Ellie and Katherine wake up in the wrong bodies. With Katherine's wedding only hours away, the mother and daughter duo need to step into each other's lives and try to understand each other in order to switch back.

I have loved all the Freaky Friday movies. The original was awesome, and the Jamie Lee Curtis/Lindsay Lohan  version in 2003 was even better.  However, as a lover of musical theater, I always get excited when anything is put to music. Having a few catchy songs mixed in with this classic story-line made it even better. I also liked how they made the device that switched them in this version associated with Ellie's father and the suggestion that maybe he was behind it. Overall, a fun new chapter of a classic that I enjoyed watching with both my daughters.
