Bathing your little one for the first time can be a little daunting. Babies' skin is especially delicate and prone to diaper rash, chafing or eczema, motivating parents to find products that are as healthy and gentle as possible. With the right supplies and a bit of practice, bathtime can be a cherished bonding experience. From prepping to washing, these bathtime basics will keep babies' skin at its healthy, huggable best:
- Organize: Once your little one is in the bath you won't be able to leave them, so set out everything you'll need before you begin: A cup for pouring water, a soft wash cloth, cotton balls for cleaning baby's eyes and ears, a towel, a brush or comb, lotion or oil, a diaper, diaper ointment and a clean set of clothes. Make sure to wear something you don't mind getting wet!
- Prepare the Bath: Fill a baby bathtub or a clean kitchen sink with a few inches of lukewarm water. Test the temperature using your elbow or wrist to make sure isn't too hot or cold. A quick tip to prevent little ones slipping is to line the bottom with a washcloth. As you carefully lower them into the tub be sure to keep one hand supporting the baby's back, neck and head. Continue supporting the baby throughout the bath with one hand, and use the other hand to wash.
- Skip The Soap: Traditional soap has a pH of 9, which can leave skin dry, tight and even more vulnerable to damage. For a healthy scalp and balanced skin, try a soap-free milky cleanser like Baby Sebamed Shampoo or Baby Sebamed Wash, which are uniquely formulated to rebalance and maintain a healthy skin pH level of 5.5. (Both $13.49 and available at SebamedUSA.com)
- Maximize Moisture: A quick coat of cream after any bath is just as important as the bath itself. Dry skin can leave little ones itchy and uncomfortable. To avoid loss of moisture, take three minutes to apply a baby cream like Baby Sebamed Cream after every bath. ($13.49, SebamedUSA.com)
Baby Sebamed is different than other baby skincare and haircare products because they do more they simply cleanse and moisturize. They are also protect a new's baby's delicate skin. Created with a special PH balance, Baby Sebemed provides a barrier of protection to prevent irritation from the elements.
My kids aren't newborns anymore, but they do have sensitive skin, so I was excited to try out Baby Sebamed shampoo and body wash. It's a gentle formula free of parabens and phthalates. It's also tear free and won't burn their eyes. It creates a nice lather and hair comes out shiny and tangle free every time, but it also helped to improve my daughter's dry and itchy scalp. I noticed a marked decrease in dandruff after only a few days of using this product. The wash is just as gentle as leaves skin clean without drying it out. It also has a very light and refreshing aroma.
The baby cream is another wonderful product. It has a light, crisp scent and leaves skin feeling rose-petal soft. It glides on smoothly and is gentle and safe for a newborns skins, leaving behind no greasy residue. It comes in a squeeze bottle that should easily last for at least a month and it smells divine. I'm definitely happy with the results and look forward to trying some other products in the line.
