Have any of you ever watched the TV show South Park? Remember the episode in which the kids had to vote for a new school mascot and it came down to either a giant douche or a turd sandwich?
Politics has gotten that way, for real. At work, in my personal life and family, I keep hearing things like,
"Both candidates stink."
"I don't want either one to win."
"I'm just not voting."
"It doesn't matter if I vote or not."
I can agree with the first two, but the last two get my dander up, especially if I hear a woman say that. If a man says it, I just tell them that if they don't vote, they have no right to complain. But if a woman says that to me, it leads to a scolding.
Do you have any idea what women went through to get the right to vote? The picketing, the arrests, the postcards, the lobbying, the arguing, the force feedings, the constant disappointments?
I think of women like Alice Paul, the Pankhurst family, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and all they went through and I just can't let them down. For us to refuse to vote makes their fight pointless. It's throwing rights away that our ancestors worked hard for. Imagine if women refused to be pilots, after all women like Amelia Earhart and Jackie Cochran and Nancy Love and the WASP did.
It's just wrong.
It makes their sacrifices for nothing. And I don't know about you all but I like to think my sacrifices mean something.
The movie Suffragette reveals just the tip of the iceburg of what some of the women went through to obtain the vote. Though it takes place in England and follows the militant movement, America was having the same battle.
Watch it, imagine yourself in her shoes, and then tell me you're going to throw away your right to vote. I dare you.
