Holiday Gift Guide - SparkUp Reader

In today’s digital age, children are much more likely to play games on a smartphone or tablet than draw with a pen and paper (like we did in the old days!).  But the Sparkup Magical Book Reader gives them a fun reason to try. The Reader’s main function is to allow parents (grandparents, friends, etc) to create personalized audio recordings of existing illustrated children’s books, which children can then listen to while reading. However, by its very nature, the Reader also enables children to create their own multimedia experiences.  A child armed with imagination, blank paper and something to draw with can create his/her own book (of any length – no novels necessary here!), and then bring this original creation to life with the Sparkup Reader, adding sound effects, voice narratives and even music.

Designed for children ages 3 through 8, the Reader attaches to the top of a book and records the user’s voice while tracking each page via its built-in camera.  Afterwards, any time the device is re-attached to that book, the camera recognizes its images and plays the appropriate recording for each page. The Reader can store up to 50 books at a time, and is available for purchase on Amazon or www.sparkup.com for $59.99.

My Thoughts

The SparkUp Reader is one of the coolest things I've tested out this holiday season. My children love to read books. We always read a few together each night before they go to sleep. But every now and then, I'm may be out at bedtime and I know they miss our nightly ritual. With SparkUp, they can hear mom read their story anytime they like.  It's also a fun idea to get grandparents, aunts, or other family members you don't get to see everyday to read a story, so your kids can hear their voices even when they are far away.

Using the SparkUp is super easy. You hook the device to the back of the book, then close the cover. When you switch on the power, the built in camera will recognize the book if it's one you've already recorded. If it's a new book, it will prompt you with the recording directions. On each new page, you hit the record button to read, then the start button to finish that page. Repeat the process until you make it through the whole book.  You can store up to 50 books in your SparkUp Reader!

So what happens if you want to delete a book? That's easy too. The SparkUp comes with a USB cable. With this feature you can keep track of the books you've downloaded and delete ones you don't want anymore. This allows the SparkUp to grow with your child as they progress to more mature reading levels. Once they learn how to read, they can even record books themselves.  The sound quality of the recording is great. Just be sure you go somewhere without a lot of background noise during the recording process.

I was absolutely thrilled with the SparkUp. I can't think of any downsides to it at all. It's easy to use and creates lasting memories. It's even a great price. I have a few books with built in recorders and they were over $20 a piece. For the same price of two of those books, I can record 50 of our favorites! Sounds like an all around good deal to me!

This is a great product for when parents may be away and the little ones miss mommy and daddy.
