 About the Company

From gleaming pots and pans to distinctive counter tops, fixtures and sinks,  copper brings a classic look to any kitchen or bath. What’s more, this metal has antimicrobial properties that can kill infection-causing bacteria*, making copper the perfect surface to keep your family safe from infection.
“Although it has been around for centuries, copper continues to bring a warm, unique style into our homes today,” said Victoria Prather, manager of communications at the Copper Development Association. “That’s why we decided to launch the Copper Home Innovation Challenge. We want to showcase the innovative ways that people are using this timeless metal in their everyday lives.”
Known to gracefully age over time, homeowners who choose to allow the natural patina of the copper to emerge truly enjoy the unique character it brings to their kitchens. “Copper has the ability to reflect your lifestyle,” said Prather. “It’s a material that has character, and can react to certain elements differently.  The countertop that surrounds your kitchen sink might vary in patina from other areas around the kitchen. This is what gives copper the warmth and depth that people have long admired.”

Furthermore, copper plays an even broader role in the kitchen: it is essential in our daily diets. Since the human body cannot make copper by itself, it must be obtained from a balanced diet and from our drinking water. Foods like whole grains, nuts, seeds, organ meats (liver, kidney), shellfish, legumes, and dark chocolate are all good sources of copper, so don’t forget to stock your kitchen full of them!
Copper can also be used in the bathroom to give the space several different looks—from elegant to earthy. Copper tubs and shower stalls become an instant focal point in any bathroom. With its ability to kill bacteria, copper also makes a great surface for bathroom counters, sinks, faucets and grab bars.
How are you using copper in your home décor? The Copper Development Association invites you to share with us your unique, copper-centric kitchen or bath project in this years’ Copper Home Innovation Challenge (C.H.I.C, for short). From now until October 15th, simply visit www.copperchic.org and submit your project for a chance to win a $250 Williams Sonoma gift card.

All projects will be judged by Phyllis Harbinger, ASID and principal of DCI Studios; Meghan Edwards, web editor for Interior Design magazine; and Wayne Seale, project manager of architectural applications at the Copper Development Association.
