Book Review: Checkout Time By Rosa Sophia

Naomi Vogler blames herself for her mother's tragic death, continually reliving the accident in her nightmares.  When she reconnects with her estranged father, he invites her to live with him in a little town called Witchfire.  A simple job stocking shelves overnight at a local grocery store seems a perfect distraction.  But when the manager of the store is found dead in the boiler room, Naomi's boring job becomes something much more complicated.  No matter how she looks at it, one thing is certain: retail is murder.

My Thoughts

Check Out Time is a mystery tinged with drama. Noami is a young girl struggling to deal with the accidental death of her mother. She moves to a new town with a father she never knew. With the help of her two friends Geo and Oliver, she lands a job stocking shelves at a grocery store on the night shift. She isn't there long when strange things start to happen. Someone is peeping in her window, her car is tampered with, and the night shift manager is found dead. It looks like a suicide but the manager of the store is suspicious and hires Alexis, a spunky native American private investigator with a fondness for Cuban cigars to get to the bottom of his death. Checkout Time takes you through a dozen twists and turns and always leaves you guessing. There are two mysteries in one because you will find out who is stalking Noami and who killed the night manager, if he was really murdered at all.

I really enjoyed Checkout Time and found all the characters to be likable and easy to relate to. Noami is a sweet young girl struggling with insecurities. As the stalker becomes more aggressive, I could really feel her fear and anxiety. I really loved Alexis. She wasn't afraid to get down and dirty and figure out what was really going on in the sleepy little town of Witchfire. Even some of the minor characters caught my attention. The drifter,Brian, who strummed his guitar outside the diner and helps Noami out of a few jams was a great addition to the story. There are lots of other characters too, meaning lots of suspects to keep you guessing. The ending was shocking and emotional and left me looking forward to more from this fabulous author
