INTRODUCTION
What follows is an excerpt from
Burke Lennihan's book, Your Natural
Medicine Cabinet, dealing with natural remedies for fear, anxiety, and
panic.
The article begins with Quick Fix
suggestions to use when you're in the midst of an upsetting episode. It
continues with suggestions for ongoing care if you regularly experience these
feelings, including herbs such as chamomile and St. John's wort, supplements
such as magnesium, and vitamins.
The article includes homeopathic
remedies for specific personality types and circumstances. Anxious about going
to the dentist? There's a remedy for that. Worried about public speaking?
There's a remedy for that. Concerned about losing your job or not having enough
money? There's a remedy for that, too.
Finally, for those with chronic
anxiety, the author suggests resources that go beyond the basic remedies in her
book.
This excerpt illustrates the wide
range Burke Lennihan covers in Your
Natural Medicine Cabinet -- from vitamins and minerals to homeopathic
formulas and breathing exercises -- all drug-free solutions to common, everyday ailments.
More
information about the book, Your Natural Medicine Cabinet, and author Burke Lennihan,
follows the excerpt. Thanks for giving this material a try -- we hope it helps!

Natural Remedies for Fear, Anxiety
and Panic
by Burke Lennihan
~ Quick Fix ~
* A GABA
formula like Natural Factors PharmaGABA. GABA is short
for "gamma-aminobutyric acid," a brain compound that increases the
production of alpha brain waves, promoting a sense of relaxation.
* Rescue
Remedy works for sudden frights or shocks of all kinds, and it can help heal
physical traumas as well as emotional blows. It comes in a wide variety of
formats now: a special blend for kids, another one for falling asleep at night,
and the option of lozenges for those who want to avoid the few drops of alcohol
in the original formula.
* Homeopathic
blends Calms Forte, Sedalia, or Liddell Anxiety Oral Spray.
* Breathe
as slowly and deeply as you can. Deep breathing helps to calm your system, just
as anxiety makes your chest tight and your breathing shallow. Inhaling the
fragrance of rose oil makes it luscious!
* The herbs
passionflower, wild oats, hops, and chamomile are traditional calming herbs
contained in the Calms Forte formula recommended above, in mildly potentized
(homeopathically energized) doses for best results. They can also be taken in
an herbal blend. If you prefer a hot cup of herbal tea, chamomile is a good
choice, especially if you have trouble sleeping when you are anxious.
* Kava
kava, valerian and St. John's wort are additional herbs traditionally used for
calming. (Some people seem to be sensitive to valerian and report a sort of
reverse effect from it: they don't sleep as well and they wake up with a
feeling of mental dullness, almost like a hangover.)
* Magnesium
has a calming effect for many people, and an easy way to take it is in powder
form: Natural Calm, which can be stirred into water to make a lemon-flavored
drink.
* The B
vitamins are also really important for your mental health. Take a multivitamin
that contains a lot of B vitamins (50 to 75 mg of each) and consider taking
extra inositol and B3. The B3 (niacin) should be in the form of niacinamide so
that it does not cause flushing and a pins-and-needles sensation.
~ Homeopathic Alternatives ~
NOTE: For more information on how to
prepare homeopathic remedies, see pages 204 to 208 of Your Natural Medicine Cabinet.
The single
homeopathic medicine that matches you best will give you greater relief than
the more generic combination remedies Calms Forte and Sedalia. For example:
* Aconite:
for people with sudden panic attacks, which might include the feeling that they
are about to die. It's also used for physical problems that come on suddenly,
typically around midnight, perhaps with heart palpitations and/or a high fever.
Aconite is most commonly used when fear of dying accompanies an acute physical
complaint (and it can often resolve both the physical and emotional symptoms).
It is sometimes used when the problem is primarily emotional, such as panic
attacks with heart palpitations.
* Arsenicum:
for people with many fears related to survival -- fear of illness, of dying, of
not having enough money, of losing their job, of becoming homeless. These fears
may seem groundless to anyone else but may seem overwhelming to people who need
Arsenicum. These people also tend to be neat freaks and control freaks. They
may also be parents hovering over their children and fretting over every
possible germ exposure.
* Argentum
nitricum: for people with specific fears (flying, going over bridges) where the
person has a vivid imagination for what might go wrong ("What if this happens? What if that happens?"). If the person has the typical
physical symptoms of Argentum nitricum, it is especially likely to work. These
include rumbling intestinal gas and explosive diarrhea. Sometimes fear of not
finding a bathroom is the biggest fear!
* Gelsemium:
most often used for fear of the dentist, fear of going to the doctor, fear of
medical tests, fear of exams, and even for pets who have a fear of the vet.
(How do they know they're going to the vet?) People who need Gelsemium express
their anxiety with a numb, brain-dead, "deer in the headlights" kind of quality, and they may feel
totally drained of energy with droopy eyelids as if they are about to fall
asleep. They may get diarrhea because their anal sphincter is also too relaxed.
* Lycopodium:
most often used for fear of public speaking, although Gelsemium will work
better if the physical symptoms match better. People who need Lycopodium tend
to have digestive symptoms, especially intestinal gas. The basic feeling with
Lycopodium is "I'm
not big enough for the job. I'm not qualified for what I've been asked to do." I've used it for clients who have
been promoted, with full confidence from their manager, but who feel like
imposters in their new position.
~ Lifestyle Support ~
These
suggestions are meant to help with occasional or mild anxiety. If anxiety is a
major ongoing problem for you, homeopathy is likely to help, but it's beyond
the scope of self-care. A professional homeopath can find the best match for
you from among hundreds of medicines, many of which are not available
over-the-counter.
If you
would like to know more about how professional homeopathic care can help heal
your emotional symptoms, consult Robert Ullman and Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman's Prozac-Free. It's not a self-help book,
however its vivid case stories will give you a sense of what professional
treatment can do.
If you have
ongoing major anxiety you'll need nutritional support too, which you can learn
about from Dr. Mark Hyman's excellent book, The
UltraMind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First -- The
Simple Way to Defeat Depression, Overcome Anxiety, and Sharpen Your Mind.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Burke
Lennihan entered Harvard planning to become a doctor like her father, but she
developed a passionate commitment for natural healing as an undergraduate, and
her life took a different turn. At a time when there was no professional
training in natural medicine, she graduated from Harvard at the top of her
class and opened a health food store.
She ran her
health food store until she was 40, interacting with thousands of customers and
developing a treasure trove of knowledge about natural remedies -- from her
studies and, more importantly, from talking to customers about what worked for
them and how they could tell it worked.
She
currently practices homeopathy at the Lydian Center for Innovative Medicine in
Cambridge, Mass. She lectures on homeopathy at Massachusetts College of
Pharmacy and at Lesley University. A health expert on Dr. Mehmet Oz's
Sharecare.com, she produces a local TV show, A Healer In Every Home, available on the GreenHealingTV channel on
