iPlay Mittens & Hat Set Review & Giveaway

I agreed to review a hat, mittens, and mitten clip for Iplay because we have cold snowy winters here in Minnesota.  Wouldn’t you know the very day the set arrived it was a balmy 74F in November?  I didn’t have to wait long; a cold front pushed through that night bringing the temps down by 40 degrees  - cold, blustery, and even a little snow!  Perfect!  My 3yr old son and I needed to run to the grocery store quick before supper.

These came sized for “Toddler, 2 -4 yrs”.  My kid is a tiny little peanut, so these will fit not only this winter but next winter too, and maybe the winter after that!  I’ll be honest – I *just* got him a new hat and gloves a couple weeks ago because #1 I somehow lost both of his stocking caps from last year, and although the previous winter’s mittens still fit, they are difficult to put on and I don’t like them.  I saw some mitten clips in the store too but didn’t buy them as I figured they would just be more winter gear to lose.  My son is special needs with low muscle tone and delayed fine motor skills, so he cannot yet put his own gear on.  He sure can take them off, though, so lost gear is a great possibility.

The mitten clips:  I attached the mitten clips to his coat and to the mittens before even attempting to put the mittens on him. Because this kid will take mittens and a hat off as soon as he possibly can, I tried to pull the clips off both the jacket and the mittens and found that I very easily could do that, which means he can too.  There is, however, a perfect workaround!  For the mittens, make sure the inside seam is inside the teeth of the clip (see photo) and they will stay put; if it isn’t (see photo) a good hard tug will pull them off.   For the jacket, his coat’s outer fabric is a smooth, almost slippery fabric and I didn’t have to tug very hard to get the clips to slide right off.  But again, we have a perfect workaround!  There is a narrow strip of fabric with a snap so the sleeve cuff can be tightened.  I just attached the clip to that strip of fabric, making sure to get all of it within the teeth of the clip.  He won’t be able to get those off without learning first how to work the clips!

The mittens:  I got his coat on him and it was quite funny watching him try to shake the attached mittens off his coat.  Because he is so small, the mittens were a bit big too, but I have to say I love the Velcro around the wrists.  This isn’t the cheap Velcro that quickly gets lint in it, making it less sticky.  I was able to tighten the mittens around his tiny little wrists and they stayed on!  Well, they stayed on until in the grocery store he finally had it with the mittens and used his teeth to pull them off his hands.

The hat:  I really like the design of the hat.  I don’t know if it’s because of the chin strap or what, but this hat stayed in place.  Stocking caps never really seem to stay in place on him and I always feel like I’m pulling them back down over his ears but pushing them up off his eyes.

I wish I’d been able to get some super cute pictures of him wearing the Iplay gear, but every single time I pulled out the camera he got mad and wasn’t having any of it, LOL!
