A Year of Living Mindfully Book Review

From recipes to rituals to the rhythm of the seasons, A YEAR OF LIVING MINDFULLY: Seasonal Practices to Nourish Body, Mind, and Spirit is the last book on wellness you’ll ever need. Achieving optimum well-being can be as easy as attuning ourselves to the cycles of the year, according to the author, holistic well-being expert and entrepreneur Randi Ragan. Her guidebook for busy people aligns the mind, body and spirit to achieve an attainable plan for optimum health and self-care in every season.

In A YEAR OF LIVING MINDFULLY, Ragan presents practical solutions for lasting wellness, including stress relief and avoiding illness, as she explains how engaging with the seasons can enhance our overall well-being. She details seasonal themes and provides corresponding recipes, teas, tonics, exercises and daily practices.

Our Thoughts

I have said it before, but I am someone who is drawn to things that are visually appealing and laid out in an easy to understand manner. I love charts and I love correspondences. A Year of Living Mindfully has all of that combined with the holistic point of view of how to change your life. Perfect. This book talks about and recommends all of the things that I strive for in my personal life.

One of the cycles of life that I adhere to is that spring is for new beginnings, summer is for acting on your plans to make those new beginnings flourish, fall is for reaping the benefits of your hard work and winter is a time of reflection within and rest from the hard work you have done. A Year of Living Mindfully is very cohesive to my personal thought process on how this cycle works and additional correspondences are given in each section, from what spiritual element the season is connected to, to the time of day and to what animals are representative too (and many more!).

A Year of Living Mindfully is filled with personal experiences from the author, natural remedies, food recipes and so much more. It's laid out in such an easy manner to read and flip through to find the information you're looking for again. This is a book to keep on hand and constantly reference too as it definitely nourishes the soul and body.

Buy yours on Amazon and don't forget to check it out on Facebook and her blog!

Essential Oils by Britney Brinson

Britney Brinson is a driven, knowledgeable and charismatic author with passion for sharing her insights on topics such as health, fitness, meditation and self-help. She is all about connecting her personal experiences with her commitment to help other people unlock their full potential and make the best out of themselves in every aspect of their daily life...on a spiritual and physical level! Her publications speak to the audience on such a honest and personal level because Britney writes from a similarly personal perspective stemming from an intimate first-hand knowledge of anything she writes about.

Our Thoughts

In the beginning of the book Britney explains that oils are not universal. What oil is appealing to one person may hold negative connotations for another person if that particular scent reminds them of a dark time in their life. This could be seen as a healing opportunity, in my opinion, but it definitely makes sense that oils are different for each person. I never considered before the emotional impact of what our past scents can have on us and why one oil is not perfect for one situation across the board.

She provides recipes to make your own essential oil blends for specific healing purposes such as energy, confidence, happiness. Everyone needs more of that! A lot of the oils she recommends for healing (emotional or physical) aligns with much of what I already know in regards to oil correspondences. I like seeing that in a book because it makes me feel I can trust the author. If the information was too far off what I have researched on my own, I would have a hard time taking Britney Brinson’s word on her suggestions.

One of my favorite parts of the books is essential oils and chakras. I love chakras and balance mine routinely and utilize oils to do so already. Reading Britney’s point of view of oils and chakras is refreshing. The root chakra is associated with Frankincense, Patchouli, Cedarwood and more. I mean, the root chakra is an earthy one, and those are some pretty earthy oils. She makes excellent associations within this book! You can find chakra information all over the web but you’ll often just get where the chakra is, what it stands for and the associations with it. Britney goes one step further and explains signs of balance and signs of imbalance. I find this helps people understand and grasp the concept of energy and chakras more easily.

Our Thoughts
The stress of the last 10 years has slowly taken its toll on my skin, and I think I now look older than my years.  Or, at least, I look less than my age until I smile . . . then all the wrinkles appear. Not that I avoid smiling, haha . . .  Anyway, I love both making my own and trying out other natural skin care products but have not yet defeated those darn wrinkles. Made from Earth sent my their plant stem cell therapy to try.

Upon opening the jar, the fresh aroma wafted up and the scents I could most easily detect were the delicious scents of (organic) unrefined cocoa butter and the pink grapefruit (a hint of chocolate + citrus - yum!). The cream itself is very thick, yet light and fluffy when applied.  It goes on almost like it just melts into your skin, and does a very good job of moisturizing.  I have tried other products containing plant stem cells, and those so far are my favorites for skin repair.

So far, after using plant stem cell therapy I've noticed my skin looks firmer for about twice the length of time than any other product I've tried has done. Not enough to last all day by any means, or at least not yet.  At first I did use it on my whole face, but ended up having to go back to my own special blend for my T-zone, where I'm most prone to breakouts as I was finding this to not prevent new breakouts. And since my wrinkles are not in the T-zone, that leaves me free to use plant stem cell therapy directly on my facial wrinkles and any other dry, aging areas, like the backs of my hands. I am very interested to see what results plant stem cell therapy produces over the next few months.  It comes in a 2 oz jar, and you need so little that it will last a good long time.

I want to point out Made from Earth's How To Guide, which is full of great information on their ingredients, suggested regimens, tips & advice, and rosacea. I'd also love to try some of their Face Serums and their lip balms look divine, too!

Holistic Pain Relief with Bausch + Lomb TheraPearl Eye Mask

Bausch + Lomb TheraPearl Eye Mask offers hot and cold therapy. The eye mask, which contains hundreds of tiny pearls can be heated in the microwave or put in the freezer, and does not leak or burst.

I got to try out the Bausch + Lomb TheraPearl EyeMask and I was really impressed with how well it  worked with both heat and cold. Using it is pretty simple. If you want to use heat, it takes literally seconds in the microwave.  It took me a few tries to get it just the right temperature in the microwave, but now that I have the hang of it, it comes out perfectly every time. They also stay warmer a lot longer than other therapy packs I've tried.   For cold therapy, it will need to stay in the freezer for at least a few hours.   If you use it hot, it provides relief for dry eyes. Cold, helps relieve headaches, swelling, and helps reduce puffiness if you don't get a good night's sleep.  These are only a few uses. The possibilities are really endless

The eye masks are a natural and holistic way to provide relief from minor aches and pains. And because they are not made from latex and are lead and BPA free, you know they are safe as well as functional. If you want to make a purchase for yourself, you can find the  Bausch+Lomb TheraPearl Eye Mask online at Amazon and Drugstore.com. Also be sure to check out their social media.

Book Review: Treatment Alternatives for Children - Lawrence Rosen, MD, and Jeff Cohen

Treatment Alternatives for Children
Lawrence Rosen, MD, and Jeff Cohen

Parents concerned about the side effects of commonly used over-the-counter and prescription medicines are in search of safe and effective natural treatment alternatives. The National Institutes of Health reports one in nine children use some form of complementary or alternative medicine. A new resource, Treatment Alternatives for Children: Reduce Serious Side Effects with Natural Equivalents to Conventional Remedies for Common Childhood Ailments, co-authored by leading integrative pediatrician Lawrence Rosen MD and holistic dad and author Jeff Cohen, will help parents find science-based natural solutions to childhood illnesses.  This book is a Mom's Choice Gold Award honoree.

Our Thoughts:
Being into a holistic lifestyle, I was happy to review a book aimed at just that, especially one geared for children!  I read it cover to cover - it covers many common childhood ailments, and has side-by-side comparisons of conventional and alternative treatments, including side effects.  I think parents need to see that side-by-side comparison, as many doctors don't talk about side effects of the medications they may push on a child.

While I think the idea behind this book is great, I feel the book itself falls far short.  In my opinion, this book would be most beneficial to those parents who are just beginning to consider holistic treatments, and definitely not for those, like me, who are quite far into their holistic journey.  The information provided is quite limited, dosage information is not always given, it mainly suggests treatments you can buy with only a generic mention of where to get them; when it does suggest herbs or essential oils to use, dosage and preparation methods are rarely mentioned. What upsets me the most is the very rare mention of what a healthy diet will do.  It seems this book is aimed more at those who want what I call a "band-aid cure", and does not get to the root of the problem.  It talks about treating the symptoms, but not the root cause.

I found the attempts at humor quite stretched, but those who are just beginning to consider holistic treatments may enjoy the writing style.
