DVD Review: Murdoch Mysteries: The Movies

“A must for British mystery fans” (Los Angeles Times) - Now in original U.K. broadcast order and newly configured in slimmer packaging. Previously broadcast on A&E and public television, the idyllic villages of Midsomer County reveal their most sinister secrets in these two series from 2011-2013. Bucolic settings harbor macabre crimes and eccentric characters that are no match for DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and his trusty sidekick, DS Ben Jones (Jason Hughes) (DVD 4-disc and 3-disc). Also available on Acorn TV.

My Thoughts

I think this is one of my favorite crime based shows. I love period drama, and I love learning about criminal investigations. This show combines both in a late 1890 - early 1900 setting. You'll learn how forensics experts solved the cases before they had the help of computers.  The cast of characters are funny, interesting, and diverse. This set includes three full length movies including:

Except the Dying - A young girl is found naked and strangled close to the hangout of the local prostitutes. Her autopsy shows she was drugged and also reveals she was pregnant. The investigation leads to a rich and powerful family who definitely had something to hide.
Poor Tom is Cold - A local police officer appears to have committed suicide, but Murdoch suspects there is more to his death than meets the eye. To prove his case he'll have to talk to a madwomen, a lady with two fiances, and a prostitute.

Under the Dragon's Tail - A woman who dies of apparent alcoholism may have been murdered because she performs illegal abortions.  Religious zealots and a man who didn't want his girlfriend to go with the abortion all become suspects.

All of this movies are a bit on the dark side, but they are always tempered with humor. Both the costumes and the sets are realistic and really help to paint a picture of the time period.   This series is definitely a refreshing switch from the norm, and I'm looking forward to watching the full series. If you want to take the advantage of a full set of amazing old world  stories, than this is the box set for you. You can order Murdoch Mysteries: The Movies on both DVDon Acorn Media or amazon.
