MURDOCH MYSTERIES, SEASON 13

Acorn TV features the DVD/Blu-ray debut of beloved Canadian period mystery series, MURDOCH MYSTERIES, SEASON 13 on July 7, 2020. Armed with gadgets and gizmos a plenty, Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) and his associates solve 18 cases across the many stratums and evolving manners of Victorian society. Set in the late 19th century in Toronto, the methodical and dashing Detective Murdoch enlists radical new forensic techniques like fingerprinting, ultraviolet light, and trace evidence to solve some of the city’s most gruesome murders. This five-disc DVD or four-disc Blu-ray set ($59.99, Amazon.com) includes the special 200th episode and Q&A with Yannick Bisson and Daniel Maslany (Detective Llewellyn Watts on the show). Season 13 of Murdoch Mysteries previously premiered weekly on Acorn TV from December 2019 – April 2020. Called a “glorious streaming service… an essential must-have” (The Hollywood Reporter), AMC Networks’ Acorn TV is North America’s most popular and largest streaming service featuring high-quality television from Britain and Beyond.

Season 13 follows Murdoch as he continues his deft detective work with new innovations, including a “searchizer” device that measures facial features and matches them with existing police files. Unfortunately, he is still rattled by suspicions about Violet Hart’s (Shanice Banton) appointment to coroner. The station also sees a new addition with Special Constable Robert Parker (Marc Senior), an African American former Pinkerton who went from suspect in a union murder to helping solve the case. Meanwhile Dr. Julie Ogden (Hélène Joy) is happily settled into her role as a full-time surgeon at Toronto Mercy Hospital but is surprised by the attentions of her colleague Dr. Andrew Dixon (Sebastian Pigott).

Inspired by Maureen Jennings’ novels, this popular series has garnered an amazing 45 Gemini® and Canadian Screen Award nominations from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television during its run, and Yannick Bisson won Canadian Screen Award’s ‘Fan’s Choice Award.’

My Thoughts

Murdoch Mysteries is one of my favorite crime based shows. I love period drama, and I love learning about criminal investigations. This show combines both in a late 1890 - early 1900 setting. You'll learn how forensics experts solved the cases before they had the help of computers and DNA.  The cast of characters are funny, interesting, and diverse. This season includes 18 new episodes.

Troublemakers -  A bomb goes off at a women's suffrage meeting. Julia goes stays with the speaker to keep  her safe.

Bad Pennies - A man arrested for the murder of a dockworker, but he swears he was chasing the real killer.

Forever Young - A woman is found with her throat slit. They think he's a missing person from years earlier but she hasn't aged.

Prodigal Father - While investigating the murder of a man posing as a waiter, Crabtree meets a man who may be his father.

The Philately Fatality - A man is killed after a gay party and they aren't sure if it was a lover or someone after this stamp collection.

Murdoch and the Cursed Caves - Murdoch and the gang come across a group of murdered campers who appear to have been attacked by a wild animal.

Toronto the Bad-  A known crook if found murdered in the back of a cab.

The Final Curtain -  An actor is killed on stage and the rest of the cast become suspects.

The Killing Dose - A woman falls from a balcony and the crew must figure out if she was pushed.

Parker in the Rye - Three murders take place a whiskey's baron's house and the only witness can't remember anything.

Staring Blindly Into the Future - Tesla gets into a fight with Thomas Edison and disappears.

Fox Hunt - During a fox hunt, the dogs stumble across a dead body.

Kill Thy Neighbor - Murdoch is framed for the murder of his neighbor after he turns up dead.

Rigid Silence - Murdoch learns of a suspicious death from an old friend.

The Trial of Terrence Meyers -Meyers is charged with the attempted assassination of the Prime Minister, but Murdoch believes he's innocent.

In the Company of Women - Julia stumbles upon a  dead body in a hair salon. The locals think it was an accident, but she's not so sure.

Things Left Behind - Watts finds a body in an alley. Murdoch takes that case while Watts investigates the theft of a painting.

The Future is Unwritten - Julia and Murdoch want to prove Violet is a murderer. Crabtree is missing.

This is such a great series. All of episodes are a bit on the dark side, but they are always tempered with humor. Both the costumes and the sets are realistic and really help to paint a picture of the time period.   This series is definitely a refreshing switch from the norm, and I'm looking forward to watching the  next season. If you want to take the advantage of a full set of amazing old world  stories, than this is the box set for you. You can order Murdoch Mysteries: Season 13 on DVD or Blu-ray on Acorn Media or Amazon.
