DVD Review: The Fall

With vivid characterizations and heart-pounding storytelling, the unforgettable, smash hit psychological thriller returns withThe Fall, Series 2 debuting on DVD and Blu-ray on March 1, 2016 from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. DSI Stella Gibson (Emmy® and Golden Globe winner Gillian AndersonBleak HouseThe X-Files) continues to hunt serial killer Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan, Fifty Shades of Grey). As Gibson tries to help Spector’s surviving victim remember the identity of her attacker, Spector deals with loose ends that he left behind in Belfast. When he realizes that someone from his past has been helping the police with their inquiries, Spector changes his plans with terrifying consequences. Co-starring Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife), Series 2 first aired in Nov. 2014 on BBC Two. Series 3 is scheduled to air in 2016. The DVD and Blu-ray 2-disc sets each feature 6 episodes plus a bonus behind-the-scenes featurette and deleted scenes ($39.99 each, AcornOnline.com). Additionally, Series 1 makes it Blu-ray debut on March 1st and is available upon request; it was released on DVD in 2013. The Fall won the 2014 Irish Film and TV Awards for Best TV Drama, Best Lead Actor (Jamie Dornan), and Best Original Score.

In Series 2, it’s been 10 days since serial killer Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) fled Belfast, and Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) is running out of time to catch him. Then Spector commits a brazen crime to silence someone from his past, and Gibson finds crucial evidence that puts her hot on his trail once more.

“An intelligent show with tremendous acting” (The Atlantic), this “harrowing yet riveting” (The Independent) British drama has enthralled critics and audiences alike. Anderson mesmerizes as the strong, self-possessed detective, while Dornan proves disturbingly charismatic as Spector, a man who is both a sadistic killer and a loving father.

BONUS Behind-the-scenes featurette (12 min.), deleted scenes (9 min.), and a photo gallery

My Thoughts

As a huge fan of Gillian Anderson, I was super exited to see her in The Fall, especially when she's playing such a strong female lead. In this series, she plays DSI Stella Gibson who is on the hunt for a serial killer.  You see the show through her eyes and the eyes of the killer himself, which makes for an exciting adventure that sometimes has you rooting for both sides. This season there were six new episodes.

These Troublesome Disguises- Paul has left behind surviving victims that could ruin his perfect double life. But if her victim doesn't remember, Stella's case could go cold.

Night Darkens the Street - Witness Rose is abducted which escalates the manhunt.

Beauty Hath Strange Power- Spector becomes a prime suspect, but they are still trying to find Rose.

The Mind Is Its Own Place - Spector is under police surveillance, but Stella is still uneasy about him getting into her room.

The Perilous Edge of Battle- Spector attempts to escape as the authorities narrow in on him.

What Is in Me Dark Illumine-  Spector, his wife, and Katie are all in custody. Spector only wants to talk to Stella.  The ending leaves us with a big surprise and a lot to follow next season.

I really enjoyed this series. Gillian is amazing and Dornan was wonderful as well. It was filled with suspense and I can't wait for series three. The DVD set also includes some deleted scenes,  a photo gallery, and behind the scenes footage.
