DVD Review: Blandings: Series 2

The highly enjoyable period comedy from the master of British wit returns with Blandings, Series 2 making its North American DVD debut on August 26, 2014 from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. P.G. Wodehouse’s beloved Blandings Castle stories follow the foibles of an eccentric aristocrat, his peculiar family, and the ramshackle ancestral home they share. In this witty BBC series (2013-14), Timothy Spall (The King’s Speech, The Syndicate), Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) and Jack Farthing (Agatha Christie’s Poirot) sparkle as Wodehouse’s madcap protagonists. Wodehouse, a perennially bestselling author and creator of the beloved Jeeves and Wooster, continues to gain new fans. The DVD 2-Disc set includes seven episodes ($39.99, AcornOnline.com). Series 1 and 2 are currently being syndicated to public television stations via Acorn. In May 2014, series two made its North American premiere on Acorn TV, the premier British TV streaming service in North America at www.Acorn.TV.

Series 2 finds the dysfunctional inhabitants of Blandings Castle caught up in more uproarious adventures, from dodging an insane asylum to thwarting a most unseemly memoir. Clarence and Connie must also contend with a spate of unwelcome houseguests, including the irascible Duke of Dunstable (Harry Enfield, Skins) and their dreadful older sister, Charlotte (Celia Imrie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), who seems determined to make Blandings her permanent home. With guest stars including Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) and Robert Bathurst (Downton Abbey), these seven pitch-perfect adaptations capture Wodehouse’s masterful skewering of the British upper classes.

My Thoughts

Blandings is a hilarious comedy series ripe with British humor. The show revolves around a zany cast of characters including their pet pig. They are an upper class family that are more than a little eccentric and the laughs keep coming with every new episode. This box set contains seven fun shows.

Throwing Eggs -   The Duke of Dunstable attempts to get Lord Clarence committed and Beach and Freddie must come up with a rescue plan.

Dirty Work at the Crossroads - Lord Clarence's sister comes for a visit but hopes to make it more permanent. Empress the pig also turns up missing.

Hallo to All This - Clarence's brother is writing a book that could shame the whole family. Freddie hopes to do a little "editing" before the books hits the presses.

Lord Emsworth Acts for the Best - A Hollywood star visits Blandings in the mist of the furnace giving out  and Clarence's misshapen attempt at growing a beard.

Sticky Wicket at Blandings - Connie is on the prowl and hoping to get the attention of Col Fanshawe.

Necessary Rhino - It looks like Clarence may have sold forged artwork.

Custody of the Pumpkin - Connie wants  Freddie to find a wife, but the one she picks happens to be a cross dresser.

There were definitely lots of laughs packed into this box set. The bonus stills in the photo gallery were a great addition. I loved seeing all the fabulous shots of the cast. All around great series!

You can order Blandings Series 2 on DVD for only $39.99 at Acorn Media.
