DVD Review: Jack Taylor Set 2

Based on the bestselling crime fiction by Ken Bruen and filmed on location against the rugged backdrop of western Ireland, this gripping series follows Jack Taylor—a former cop fighting his own demons—as he works cases in Galway as a private detective. Set 2’s three new mysteries were broadcast in the U.K. on Channel 5 in 2013 and Acorn TV, the premier British TV streaming service, added them in April 2014. Jack Taylor is a former cop turned private investigator with little to show for his time in the Irish Guards but his old police overcoat. Few of his former colleagues have any regard for Taylor, who looks more like the people they arrest every day than one of their own. The exception is his friend Garda Kate Noonan (Nora-Jane Noone, The Magdalene Sisters), though even she has to walk a fine line between helping Taylor and irritating her boss.

Six months sober, Taylor takes on cases with the help of his young assistant, Cody (Killian Scott, Love/Hate), even while he worries about his elderly mother, who has suffered a stroke. Try as he might, the ex-cop from Galway finds that in his hometown, his past is always just a mistake away. The series also stars John Kavanagh (Alexander, Braveheart).

My Thoughts 

Set Two is an excellent addition to the Jack Taylor series. Jack is an ex-cop who now works as a PI.  This box set brings us three new episodes including:

The Dramatist: A drama student's death is declared a suicide associated with drug use, but one of her professors suspects foul play and hires Jack.

Priest:  A priest is beheaded while praying in his church. The other priest fears he might be next on the list and calls on Jack to see which of the parishioners might be the culprit.

Shot Down:  When a woman's shooting goes unsolved, Jack volunteers his services to help protect the woman's daughter who may have witnessed the crime.

This gritty series will leave you on the edge of your seat the whole time. There's lots of action and even a little romance.  I have seen the whole series, but you can watch each episode as a stand-alone. There are no cliff-hangers and each episode is it's own complete story. A great series for fans of drama and mystery with a little bit of edginess.
