DVD Review: Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre

Well-acted…intriguing” —USA Today

Oscar® nominee Samantha Morton (In America) stars in this gripping adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s gothic romance about a young governess who uncovers dark secrets at an elegant English estate.

Orphaned as a child, a determined Jane Eyre struggles through hardship and brutality to gain an education. Hungry for adventure, she takes a job as a governess at the sprawling Thornfield Hall, where the master is the harsh, enigmatic Mr. Rochester (Ciarán Hinds, Game of Thrones). Despite his brooding ways, Jane finds herself falling in love—but something stalks the halls of Thornfield that threatens to destroy any happiness they might find together.

Morton mesmerizes as Brontë’s passionate, strong-willed heroine, and Hinds gives a commanding performance as Rochester in this satisfying adaptation of the timeless novel.

My Thoughts

Jane struggles through a difficult childhood. When she's orphaned, her aunt throws her in an institution. Trying to find her own way in life, she becomes the governess for the dashing Mr. Rochester. He's a little on the morose side, but their personalities compliment each other, and Jane knows she's falling in love. But this is more than just your typical rags to riches romance. There are secrets in Thornfield Hall, locked behind a door on the third floor--secrets that could lead to murder if Jane isn't careful.

This film is a wonderful adaption of the classic novel that stays pretty true to both the dialogue and storyline (from what I recall- it's been 20 years since I read it).  Both Morton and Bronte give stunning performances, and the costumes and scenery really draw you into the time period. If you enjoyed the book or like historical films, this is one movie you won't want to miss out on.

If you'd like to pick up a copy of this classic film for your personal library, you can find it on Acorn Media for only $19.99 or check it out on Amazon.
