The Y to Offer 18,000 At-Risk Youth Free Access to Safety Around Water Program

During National Water Safety Month, Y-USA commits to help all children stay safe in and around water, with an emphasis on reaching at-risk African American and Hispanic/Latino children

With Memorial Day weekend almost here, the unofficial start of summer is right around the corner. As kids and families flocking to public and residential pools, lakes and beaches, it's important to remember that drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years old, and sadly African American children ages 5 to 14 are three times more likely to drown than their white peers.

That’s why during the month of May, the YMCA of the USA recognizes National Water Safety Month and has pledged to provide more than 18,000 scholarships for free swim lessons to children from underserved communities—with an emphasis on reaching at-risk African American and Hispanic/Latino children—as a part of its Safety Around Water program.

So while fatal drowning is a concern for all kids, children of color are disproportionately at-risk. The Y is dedicated to reversing the alarming statistics about youth drowning rates, especially in African American and Hispanic/Latino communities:

·         3 kids die every day from drowning
·         Drowning is the second-leading cause of deaths for kids ages 5-14
·         African American children ages 5 to 14 are 3 times more likely to drown than their white peers
·         70 percent of African American and 60 percent of Hispanic children cannot swim, compared to just 40 percent of Caucasian children
·         88 percent of kids who drown do so under adult supervision
·         60 percent of kids who drown are within 10 feet of safety
·         Participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children one to four years old
·         More than 1 million kids take swim lessons at the Y every year

Through the Y’s Safety Around Water program, parents and caregivers will help their children learn fundamental water safety and swimming skills. Armed with these skills, children will know how to reach the water’s surface if they become submerged, safely reach a pool’s edge, exit any body of water and respond to unexpected water situations.

Baili's Chocolate Croissants Summer #Giveaway

One of our favorite week-long holidays is right around the corner – Memorial Day! There's no better excuse to indulge in America's favorite sweet than an actual holiday.

For all of the chocolate lovers who enjoy this treat regularly, try celebrating with something other than your average candy bar or cupcake. Bauli Chocolate Mini Croissants are made in a REAL oven with no preservatives and naturally leavened dough. At just 50 calories a pop, these snacks are guilt-free and made for sharing...although you might not want to! Most importantly, Bauli Chocolate Mini Croissants are a fun and easy way to celebrate the start of summer.

My Thoughts

I was raised in an Italian household, and have always had a soft spot for Italian desserts. When I a child, I had great aunts and uncles who would bring all sorts of delicatessens from bakeries in South Philly when they came to visit. Most of those bakeries have shut down now, and it's not often we can find a quality Italian dessert, but Bauli offers just that. One of my favorites if their Croissants.

The Croissants are a delicious way to start your morning routine. Choose from flavors like cherry, vanilla, and chocolate I really enjoyed these because some desserts are just unbearably sweet, but that isn't the case with these yummy croissants. They are nice and fresh with just enough jelly to give you some flavor, but without being too sweet for breakfast, They were just right with a cup of tea or coffee.

If you'd like to learn more about Bauli and all they have to offer, be sure to visit their website. For even more fun, you can try the mini versions of their cakes so you can take them with you on the go. Remember, Bauli is the perfect way to bring a taste of Italy to your summer celebrations.

My Thoughts

I try my best to keep my family as active as possible. Both of my children are  involved in sports and their TV and video game time is limited to an hour a day. But it's also important to watch what they eat.  It isn't easy to find fun snack foods that are good for them and that they are actually willing to eat. That's why I was really happy to try out a few of the delicious varieties of crackers and chips from Crunchmaster.  These crispy snacks are gluten free, cholesterol free and saturated fat free.  They are also a good source of fiber and made using whole grains. The best part of all is that they taste just as good as any other snacks.

We received a few varieties of Crunchmaster to try out. I personally LOVED the  Multi-Seed Crackers.  They are so tasty, you don't really need to put anything on them, but they are the perfect compliment to any cheese or meats.  I thought they were better than most of the popular name brands crackers. They are light and crunchy and not greasy at all.  The  Sea Salt were tasty too. They are lightly salted and nice and crispy. They  both have lots of flavor, and don't taste like card board like most gluten free products. Ky kids never have guessed they were a healthier alternative to regular crackers, but I know the difference, and even if they cost a little bit more, they are definitely worth it because they are so much healthier for my family.

Confetti Spirit Nested Bowls from Zak Designs - Review & #Giveaway

For years, Zak’s Confetti line of dinnerware, serveware, and kitchen prep products have shown people how colorful and stylish environmentally friendly products can be. This year, they’re also going to show people how patriotic it is to be more eco-conscious!

Zak is expanding its popular Confetti line to include the new Spirit Nested Bowls. Just in time for Memorial Day, the Spirit Nested Bowls allow everyone to kick-off the barbeque season in style and proudly display their patriotic spirit in the kitchen or any backyard gathering.

The set includes a 4.4qt, 2.5qt, 1.25qt, and an 18oz bowl that nest inside each other for easy storage. Although the patented process used to create the Confetti products means that each piece is unique, the colors in the Patriotic Bowl Set coordinate with the entire selection of dinnerware and serveware in the red and white Confetti collections, giving people an easy way to tie all of their Confetti products into one cohesive statement.

The bowls are BPA-free, dishwasher safe, and, like all Confetti products, they’re made with recycled melamine – allowing people across the country to show their green colors with as much pride as their red, white, and blue.

 My Thoughts

With Memorial Day coming up this weekend, I can think of no better serving bowls than the Zak Confetti Nested Bowls in patriotic shades of red, white, and blue.  Each set includes four bowls of various sizes. If you're planning a barbeque for the weekend, they are great way to present your side dishes with style. The largest bowl could hold fruits, the midsize bowls are great for potato salads, and even the smallest size would work for condiments. The cheerful colors and confetti design are sure to get  your guest's attention.

In addition to being lovely for display, the bowls also work great for mixing cake batters or storing items in the fridge. They are large and sturdy, and won't break if you drop them. My son dropped one twice already, so I can vouch for this. They are also machine safe, making clean up a breeze. They're even easy to store since they can be stacked inside one another to save space. I just love these bowls and  I know they'll be getting plenty of use in my household all year long.

In addition to the  bowls, Zak has plenty of other fun items for your house and home. They have unique table top settings, Salad and Serve ware, and more. They also make adorable lunch boxes and table settings for kids, which are fun and practical gift ideas. Zak Designs are available in a number of nationwide retailers like Walmart and Target or you can order direct from their website. Shipping is free in all orders over $50!  To see a full list of retailers check their website. And for lots of recipes and dinner time activities, check out their mealtime fun section.
