FALL BACK INTO SAFETY THIS SEASON WITH TIPS AND EASY-TO-USE PRODUCTS FROM MASTER LOCK

A new season brings new safety precautions to consider as daylight quickly turns to dusk and temperatures begin to drop. With school routines and activity schedules in full swing, Master Lock is reminding families and consumers to fall back into safety without falling victim to vulnerabilities with helpful advice and reliable products.

Don’t let security fall by the wayside. Master Lock wants consumers to stay one step ahead with these tips to help keep families safe and secure this season.

1.      Secure the backyard: Swing sets, pets and pools are among the fun, recreational items found in many backyards. Keep these valuables secure with the Master Lock Magnum M175XDLF Padlock. From storing pool toys or patio furniture to helping ensure pets remain in the yard, the Master Lock Magnum M175XDLF Padlock’s Tough-Cut shackle is 50 percent tougher than hardened steel, making it ideal for protecting the most valuable items in sheds, storage lockers, fences and gates.

2.      Lock up with lights on: Approximately 33 percent of break-ins occur through the front door, making it important to secure your home entirely to help avoid possible burglaries. To help protect against intruders, use a Master Lock 265DCCSEN Door Security Bar to resist forced entry through front, patio or sliding glass doors. For added precaution, make sure your outside lights are functioning properly and maintain a well-lit property to deter possible intrusions.

3.      Gun safety: If a household possesses firearms, it is of the utmost importance that they are consistently secured and not easily accessible, especially when children are present. Take maximum security measures by locking-up firearms and storing them in a safe and in an out-of-sight location that is also out of children’s reach. Designed with a deadbolt locking mechanism, the Master Lock 107DSPT Gun Lock can only be opened and closed when the key is inserted and turned for added security measures. The Sentry Safe Quick Access Pistol Safe provides readily available access when needed in an emergency, but its pry resistant solid steel construction helps prevent unauthorized access. Remember to always remove ammunition before storage, and keep ammunition in a locked location separate from firearms.

4.      Protect digital data: Personal and sensitive information such as legal documents, social security cards and bank account passwords should always remain in a secure location away from prying eyes.  The Master Lock Vault is a go-to free, digital safe deposit box that helps keep critical information from falling into the wrong hands. Store passwords and digital copies of important documents all in one place with access from any smartphone or computer. The Master Lock Vault helps ensure this information is protected and secure.

My Thoughts

I got to try out the Master Lock 265DCCSEN Door Security Bar, and it's made me feel so much more secure. Being a single mother with four kids can be scary sometimes, especially late at night when I'm sure I hear someone creeping around in the backyard. Usually it's just my writer's imagination getting the best of me, but you never know when someone might try to break into your home. Those little locks on my doors wouldn't hold anyone out who really wanted to get in, but the security bar gives me an extra layer of protection that helps me sleep better at night.

The Door Security Bar is very easy to use. Simply prop the handle end up against your door and place the leg against the floor.  The bar is adjustable, so it will fit any size door. If you have a sliding door, you can also lay it down in the gap between the two parts of the doors. There is no assembly required and the sturdy metal makes it next to impossible for anyone to get into your home. I feel much more secure with this on my door at night.

Our Thoughts
We recently purchased a rural property and plan to build a new home on it.  In the meantime, we'd like to leave some possessions for property maintenance there on the property and want to keep those items secure. The Master Lock Portable Key Safe is roomy enough to keep all our necessary keys safe, without us having to hand off a key ring to whoever will be working on it and then have to get that key ring back.

The Portable Key Safe has this vinyl coated exterior case to prevent scratches - it is very smooth to the touch, with no sharp edges.  You'd have to work pretty hard to be able to scratch a door with this!  It's also meant to keep the Key Safe, safe from the elements.

First up, you open it with the grips on the sides of the protective case.  There are some instructions shown on the inside of the case - as near as I can figure out, they are for if you fat-finger your code - just slide the C button down (bottom center) to reset, then punch in your code again to open the unit.  The unit comes fully open-able, so you then set your own code. You can choose up to 12 letters and/or numbers for your code.

Here you can see the inside - nice and roomy!  There are directions imprinted in the black plastic for the way the little yellow arrows go for setting your own code.  Change the arrows using the sequence for the code you choose, and you're done!  You'll need to enter the code both to open the unit, and to close the unit. It's easy to change the code, too.

My husband says this is such a well made, sturdy key safe that if we weren't going to be using it, he'd like to take a 30.06 to it and see if he could destroy it or not!  Men.  Gotta love 'em!  Always wanting to blow stuff up. :)

#Giveaway and Review: Master Lock Security File Box

MASTER LOCK MAKES FILING LESS TAXING WITH SWEEPSTAKES,
TIPS FOR MAXIMIZING RETURNS AT VARIOUS LIFE STAGES

Five Master Lock Vault® users will win $1,000 each in Tax Relief Reward Sweepstakes

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (March XX, 2015) – Approximately 1 in 5 Americans who file their own tax return leave an average of $450 on the table each year – adding up to more than $5 billion in the U.S. – due largely to unnoticed deductions and credits*. This tax season, Master Lock is offering advice for maximizing returns during key life stages with credit opportunities and organization tips, and is also providing financial relief  to consumers via the Master Lock Tax Relief Reward Sweepstakes.

Now through April 16, any registered user of the Master Lock Vault is eligible to enter for a chance to win one of five $1,000 prizes. The Master Lock Vault is a free, digital safe deposit box that provides a safe and secure solution for storing copies of important tax documents for easy access from any smart phone or computer.

“Each new stage of life brings with it new considerations during tax time,” said Rebecca Smith, vice president, marketing for Master Lock. “Whether it’s your first year doing your own taxes, or first year with a dependent on your tax forms, we’re here to help you feel more confident about the process and your results, and maybe even take home some extra cash.”

No matter which life stage you are in this tax season, pay close attention to possible deductions and credits you may qualify for as you reach each new milestone**:

1.      Recent College Graduates: Graduating from college is a great accomplishment, but many graduates face a mountain of debt owed on their student loans. Luckily, there are credits that could provide a tax break for young professionals this season:

Graduates who begin repaying their student loans may qualify for the Student Loan Interest Deduction, which would deduct up to $2,500 of qualified student loan interest. If you plan to continue your education, you may qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit which can provide eligible students with a tax credit toward undergraduate, graduate or professional degree courses at an eligible educational institution.

2.      Newlyweds: After exchanging rings and tossing the bouquet, newlyweds’ lives – and taxes – merge into one. Filing jointly with your spouse offers many advantages, and the IRS gives joint filers one of the largest deductions each year.

With a new marital status comes significant changes that could affect your taxes. It’s imperative for the names and Social Security numbers on your tax return to reflect your Social Security Administration (SSA) records. If you made changes to your name (Form SS-5) or address (Form 8822), you need to file the proper forms to notify the SSA and IRS. You should also notify your workplace to ensure your receive your W-2.

3.      Parents: Raising a child to the age of 18 costs approximately $245,000 in today’s economy, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Parents can ease their burden by taking advantage of the Child Tax Credit, which offers a tax credit up to $1,000 per qualifying child. Additionally, parents who paid for child care in order to work may qualify for the Child and Dependent Care Credit, which reduces federal income tax.

4.      Seniors (65+): As we age, it’s even more important to correctly prepare tax returns in order to receive the proper deductions and credits. Storing personal expenses and documentation in a secure location, such as the Master Lock Vault, will keep seniors’ personal information organized and eliminate the worry of lost or stolen paper documents that contain confidential information. If you want or need to store physical copies, keep them protected in a locking fire- and water-resistant Sentry Safe storage chest or safe.

Based on filing status, seniors may qualify for the Credit for the Elderly or Disabled (Forms 1040 or 1040A), and seniors who do not itemize their deductions receive a higher deduction amount. Seniors should also take advantage of free tax services, such as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which provides income tax preparation and electronic filing services, and Tax Counseling for the Elderly program, which focuses on pensions and retirement-related concerns.

Master Lock Tax Relief Rewards Sweepstakes
An added bonus of utilizing the Master Lock Vault to organize the variety of forms and online passwords needed for your tax-filing process this year is the chance to win $1,000, which can be used to supplement your tax refund, or help ease the burden of additional taxes owed. To enter, new users can register for a Master Lock Vault account at www.MasterLockVault.com. Once the account has been activated, users will receive an email containing the sweepstakes entry form. Existing Master Lock Vault users who have opted in for brand communications will receive an email with the sweepstakes entry form once the sweepstakes kicks off March 16. One entry will be accepted per person through April 16.

Master Lock Vault
Benefits of the Master Lock Vault extend well beyond the tax season. Use the system year-round, via the website or by installing one of the free mobile apps for your Apple®, Android®, Kindle® or Nook® devices. Securely store and organize lock combinations, digital copies of your passport and social security card and other confidential data such as debit or PIN card numbers or online credit card account log-in information. My Thoughts:

I found this bock to be very secure and durable. The files I have fit perfectly in the box. I was able to fit a good amount of files in it. It is a lightweight box, not overly heavy. Without files inside, I was able to pick it up with one hand without a problem. Even with files inside of it, I was still able to lift with one hand. The design made it easy to tuck away. Even turning it sideways, my files stayed in tack.

I like that the box can be locked. Gives me a little more secure feeling when placing things such as bank records and personal files inside. The box has a logo on the side that it's tough under fire. I did not test that. :) I will just have to take their word for it.

Over all, I was very pleased with this file box and it would be one I pick up again in the future and recommend to friends.

The campaign will continue throughout the year with a series of safety tips and advice for every life stage and season.

My Thoughts

Master Lock was nice enough to send us a portable safe to try out as part of this promotion and my  daughter loves it. She's a teenager and she carries lots of things to school that I worry about her losing like house keys,  her  cell phone, and cash just to name a few. The portable safe gives me a little peace of mind. She's able to cable to wrap the case securely around the divider in her locker. Then she can put all her valuable items inside. She can even move it easily from her regular locker to her gym locker so she can toss in jewelry while she's in gym class without having to worry. No one can get in without breaking the combination. When she leaves school, she simply unhooks it and tosses it in her bag. Just keep in mind this may not work in every locker. You need to have something to wrap the cord around. Also its' not a fire proof safe and is meant more to protect from stealing than the elements.

Of course, this is only one possible use for the portable safe. There are lots of places where it could come in handy. You can use it in the car, on college campuses, at work, or on vacations. Anywhere you feel you need a little extra security, you can bring this along and feel more peace of mind. The safe is small enough that you can store in your book bag or handbag but very sturdy despite the fact that it's made from plastic. It's also water resistant and even has a foam lining to help protect the items inside from damage. We're very happy with this item and it's a great deal for the price.

#Giveaway - Now is the Time to Prepare-Opportunity with Master Lock!

North America is home to thousands of severe weather situations every year -- from thunderstorms to tornados and wildfires to hurricanes. Since many of these storms strike without much warning, Master Lock encourages consumers to prepare now to ensure their families and belongings stay safe during even the most tumultuous events.

Master Lock offers these tips to help families prepare for severe weather:

1. Learn the language. Beginning October 22, the National Weather Serv
ice Storm Prediction Center in the U.S. will add two new threat levels to its weather outlooks for storm days at risk of producing tornados, hail or high winds. Risk categories will now include "enhanced" and "marginal," in addition to the existing "slight," "high" and "moderate."

In Canada, citizens can depend on Environment Canada for severe weather warnings and watches. In April, Environment Canada updated its list of alert types to more accurately describe the severity of different weather hazards.
Learn the language of your national weather advisory organization so you can prepare appropriately for severe weather.

2. Prepare in advance. Severe weather may strike without warning, so take the basic steps now to ensure your family is ready should a storm strike when you're home or away.
If you're home when weather hits, an updated emergency kit is essential. Consumers listed water and non-perishable food as the two most important items in their emergency kits, according to the 2014 Safety and Security Survey*. Store these items in a cool, dry place and replace them every six months to ensure freshness. By writing dates on containers when you store them, you'll know exactly when it's time to swap them out. Don't forget to pack for your pets, too.
In the event that severe weather hits while you're out of town, ensure that a trusted friend or neighbor has the appropriate codes to access your property if needed. A resettable combination padlock, such as the Master Lock M175XDLF Combination Padlock, is a convenient option for securing your gate or fence since it does not require a key. It also allows you to change the combination as often as you wish, including when you arrive back home for added security.

3. Create a backup plan. Personal memorabilia and family/business documents were listed as the top two items people would want to save from their homes in case of a severe weather situation. To ensure these important documents remain intact after an emergency passes, store them in a Sentry®Safe fire safe that offers protection against fire and flood. To aid with disaster recovery in real time, store digital copies of these important documents -- including insurance policies -- in a secure online storage hub like the Master Lock Vault. The Master Lock Vault is free and can be accessed 24 hours a day, via smartphone, tablet or computer, allowing for easy access in any situation.

4. Secure outdoor belongings. Storms can often be most damaging to the exterior of your home, due to either heavy winds or rain, or damaging hail or lightning. In case of inclement weather, lock up all possible outdoor belongings in a covered shed or garage, and secure the door with a padlock built to survive extreme weather situations, such as the Master Lock M115XDLF Covered Laminated Padlock. For items that can't be moved to an inside space, such as patio furniture, lock them tightly together and to another sturdy surface, if possible, with a secure cable and locking system like the Master Lock Python™ Adjustable Locking Cable. These tactics may also safe-guard your belongings against looters in the worst-case scenario if you are forced to evacuate your home.

5. Go cordless. Power outages are often associated with heavy storms. Be prepared by purchasing batteries for flashlights and weather radios and portable, external battery packs for charging cell phones when the power's out -- just be sure to keep the battery pack charged! If you lose power, remember to unplug all of your electrical appliances such as laptops, televisions and corded phones. Power surges can occur as the result of lightning and can damage plugged-in electronics and appliances. If you still have power during a lightning storm, avoid using corded (landline) telephones, as they can conduct electricity.

Visit www.masterlock.com for additional information or www.masterlockimages.com for high-res downloadable images.

 My Thoughts

A few years ago, my little corner of the world was hit hard by Super Storm Sandy. Personally, I was very lucky. My home was untouched and our business had only minimal damage. Many others didn't fair as well. Entire towns were devastated by flood waters and many homes were lost. There are lots of ways that Master Lock can help you prepare for emergencies. I have a whole collection of their waterproof and fireproof boxes for all my important papers. Another important thing to consider is securing the area if you're forced to evacuate. Master Lock can help here too.  For me the adjustable locking cable is a must-have. Whether I want to secure my patio furniture or lock up my shed, this cable has me covered.

Stay Safe This Summer With Master Lock - Review & #Giveaway

**Complimentary product received in exchange for an honest review***

With nearly 45 percent of consumers in North America using only the simple precaution of locking their homes' doors and windows while traveling*, Master Lock is reminding summer travelers that no travel plan is complete without proper safety and security precautions. Whether embarking on a quick weekend road trip or an extended vacation, Master Lock is offering tips to help travelers keep safety top of mind at every step of their journey.

As travelers take to trains (preferred by 3.8 percent of North Americans), planes (24.17 percent) and automobiles (68.58 percent) this summer, Master Lock offers these five security tips:

1. Protect the Home Front - A home that looks deserted makes an easy target for thieves. To keep your home looking occupied, set your lights on a timer and stop your newspaper and mail delivery so it doesn't build up while you are away. For added security, ask a trusted neighbor to check your home periodically and alert the police of any suspicious activity. Grant easy access to authorized visitors by storing your spare key in a portable key safe, like the Master Lock 5422D.

2. Limit Distractions on the Road - A focused driver is essential for any safe road trip, so plan to limit distractions by muting cell phones and packing provisions to keep young passengers fully entertained. Also, making frequent stops to refuel your body and clear your mind can boost energy and make for a safer journey.

3. Prevent Theft from Luggage - In a recent survey, North Americans said they would be most devastated if their cash (25.59 percent) or their camera (19.91 percent) were stolen from their suitcase*. With only 33 percent of North Americans securing their luggage*, travelers should
consider using a TSA-accepted luggage lock to help ensure the contents of their bags remain secure. If possible, keep valuables that would be hard to replace in a carry-on bag so they're always with you.

4. Protect Your Home Away from Home - Always lock up valuables when away from your room. If your hotel doesn't offer an in-room safe, bring your own portable 5900D SafeSpace to keep passports, jewelry and small electronics safe while you and your family are out and about.

5. Take Advantage of Technology - Advancements in technology continue to make travel both easier and safer. A smart idea for keeping kids safe is to take a cell phone picture of them every morning while on vacation. If something happens or if you get separated, you have a recent picture of him/her that shows the exact outfit they are wearing that day. Also, utilize the free Master Lock Vault app and website to store digital copies of important data such as travel documents, insurance cards, passports and medical information for easy access if paper documents are not readily available or are lost.
