Our Thoughts
We recently purchased a rural property and plan to build a new home on it. In the meantime, we'd like to leave some possessions for property maintenance there on the property and want to keep those items secure. The Master Lock Portable Key Safe is roomy enough to keep all our necessary keys safe, without us having to hand off a key ring to whoever will be working on it and then have to get that key ring back.
The Portable Key Safe has this vinyl coated exterior case to prevent scratches - it is very smooth to the touch, with no sharp edges. You'd have to work pretty hard to be able to scratch a door with this! It's also meant to keep the Key Safe, safe from the elements.
First up, you open it with the grips on the sides of the protective case. There are some instructions shown on the inside of the case - as near as I can figure out, they are for if you fat-finger your code - just slide the C button down (bottom center) to reset, then punch in your code again to open the unit. The unit comes fully open-able, so you then set your own code. You can choose up to 12 letters and/or numbers for your code.
Here you can see the inside - nice and roomy! There are directions imprinted in the black plastic for the way the little yellow arrows go for setting your own code. Change the arrows using the sequence for the code you choose, and you're done! You'll need to enter the code both to open the unit, and to close the unit. It's easy to change the code, too.
My husband says this is such a well made, sturdy key safe that if we weren't going to be using it, he'd like to take a 30.06 to it and see if he could destroy it or not! Men. Gotta love 'em! Always wanting to blow stuff up. :)

MASTER LOCK STAY SAFE THROUGH EVERY LIFE STAGE AND SEASON #MasterLockProtects #Giveaway
Master Lock, the world’s largest manufacturer of padlocks, today announced its continued focus on helping consumers stay safe with a yearlong campaign dedicated to safety through every life stage. To kick off the campaign, Master Lock will ask consumers via Twitter to share the time in their life when safety and security has been most top of mind. For every Tweet posted with the hashtag #MasterLockProtects a $1 donation will be made to the American Red Cross up to $10,000. The campaign will continue throughout the year with a series of safety tips and advice for every life stage and season.
Master Lock was nice enough to send us a portable safe to try out as part of this promotion and my daughter loves it. She's a teenager and she carries lots of things to school that I worry about her losing like house keys, her cell phone, and cash just to name a few. The portable safe gives me a little peace of mind. She's able to cable to wrap the case securely around the divider in her locker. Then she can put all her valuable items inside. She can even move it easily from her regular locker to her gym locker so she can toss in jewelry while she's in gym class without having to worry. No one can get in without breaking the combination. When she leaves school, she simply unhooks it and tosses it in her bag. Just keep in mind this may not work in every locker. You need to have something to wrap the cord around. Also its' not a fire proof safe and is meant more to protect from stealing than the elements.
Of course, this is only one possible use for the portable safe. There are lots of places where it could come in handy. You can use it in the car, on college campuses, at work, or on vacations. Anywhere you feel you need a little extra security, you can bring this along and feel more peace of mind. The safe is small enough that you can store in your book bag or handbag but very sturdy despite the fact that it's made from plastic. It's also water resistant and even has a foam lining to help protect the items inside from damage. We're very happy with this item and it's a great deal for the price.

#Giveaway - Now is the Time to Prepare-Opportunity with Master Lock!
North America is home to thousands of severe weather situations every year -- from thunderstorms to tornados and wildfires to hurricanes. Since many of these storms strike without much warning, Master Lock encourages consumers to prepare now to ensure their families and belongings stay safe during even the most tumultuous events.
Master Lock offers these tips to help families prepare for severe weather:
1. Learn the language. Beginning October 22, the National Weather Serv
ice Storm Prediction Center in the U.S. will add two new threat levels to its weather outlooks for storm days at risk of producing tornados, hail or high winds. Risk categories will now include "enhanced" and "marginal," in addition to the existing "slight," "high" and "moderate."
In Canada, citizens can depend on Environment Canada for severe weather warnings and watches. In April, Environment Canada updated its list of alert types to more accurately describe the severity of different weather hazards.
Learn the language of your national weather advisory organization so you can prepare appropriately for severe weather.
2. Prepare in advance. Severe weather may strike without warning, so take the basic steps now to ensure your family is ready should a storm strike when you're home or away.
If you're home when weather hits, an updated emergency kit is essential. Consumers listed water and non-perishable food as the two most important items in their emergency kits, according to the 2014 Safety and Security Survey*. Store these items in a cool, dry place and replace them every six months to ensure freshness. By writing dates on containers when you store them, you'll know exactly when it's time to swap them out. Don't forget to pack for your pets, too.
In the event that severe weather hits while you're out of town, ensure that a trusted friend or neighbor has the appropriate codes to access your property if needed. A resettable combination padlock, such as the Master Lock M175XDLF Combination Padlock, is a convenient option for securing your gate or fence since it does not require a key. It also allows you to change the combination as often as you wish, including when you arrive back home for added security.
3. Create a backup plan. Personal memorabilia and family/business documents were listed as the top two items people would want to save from their homes in case of a severe weather situation. To ensure these important documents remain intact after an emergency passes, store them in a Sentry®Safe fire safe that offers protection against fire and flood. To aid with disaster recovery in real time, store digital copies of these important documents -- including insurance policies -- in a secure online storage hub like the Master Lock Vault. The Master Lock Vault is free and can be accessed 24 hours a day, via smartphone, tablet or computer, allowing for easy access in any situation.
4. Secure outdoor belongings. Storms can often be most damaging to the exterior of your home, due to either heavy winds or rain, or damaging hail or lightning. In case of inclement weather, lock up all possible outdoor belongings in a covered shed or garage, and secure the door with a padlock built to survive extreme weather situations, such as the Master Lock M115XDLF Covered Laminated Padlock. For items that can't be moved to an inside space, such as patio furniture, lock them tightly together and to another sturdy surface, if possible, with a secure cable and locking system like the Master Lock Python™ Adjustable Locking Cable. These tactics may also safe-guard your belongings against looters in the worst-case scenario if you are forced to evacuate your home.
5. Go cordless. Power outages are often associated with heavy storms. Be prepared by purchasing batteries for flashlights and weather radios and portable, external battery packs for charging cell phones when the power's out -- just be sure to keep the battery pack charged! If you lose power, remember to unplug all of your electrical appliances such as laptops, televisions and corded phones. Power surges can occur as the result of lightning and can damage plugged-in electronics and appliances. If you still have power during a lightning storm, avoid using corded (landline) telephones, as they can conduct electricity.

My Thoughts
A few years ago, my little corner of the world was hit hard by Super Storm Sandy. Personally, I was very lucky. My home was untouched and our business had only minimal damage. Many others didn't fair as well. Entire towns were devastated by flood waters and many homes were lost. There are lots of ways that Master Lock can help you prepare for emergencies. I have a whole collection of their waterproof and fireproof boxes for all my important papers. Another important thing to consider is securing the area if you're forced to evacuate. Master Lock can help here too. For me the adjustable locking cable is a must-have. Whether I want to secure my patio furniture or lock up my shed, this cable has me covered.

Stay Safe This Summer With Master Lock - Review & #Giveaway
**Complimentary product received in exchange for an honest review***
With nearly 45 percent of consumers in North America using only the simple precaution of locking their homes' doors and windows while traveling*, Master Lock is reminding summer travelers that no travel plan is complete without proper safety and security precautions. Whether embarking on a quick weekend road trip or an extended vacation, Master Lock is offering tips to help travelers keep safety top of mind at every step of their journey.
As travelers take to trains (preferred by 3.8 percent of North Americans), planes (24.17 percent) and automobiles (68.58 percent) this summer, Master Lock offers these five security tips:
1. Protect the Home Front - A home that looks deserted makes an easy target for thieves. To keep your home looking occupied, set your lights on a timer and stop your newspaper and mail delivery so it doesn't build up while you are away. For added security, ask a trusted neighbor to check your home periodically and alert the police of any suspicious activity. Grant easy access to authorized visitors by storing your spare key in a portable key safe, like the Master Lock 5422D.
2. Limit Distractions on the Road - A focused driver is essential for any safe road trip, so plan to limit distractions by muting cell phones and packing provisions to keep young passengers fully entertained. Also, making frequent stops to refuel your body and clear your mind can boost energy and make for a safer journey.
3. Prevent Theft from Luggage - In a recent survey, North Americans said they would be most devastated if their cash (25.59 percent) or their camera (19.91 percent) were stolen from their suitcase*. With only 33 percent of North Americans securing their luggage*, travelers should
consider using a TSA-accepted luggage lock to help ensure the contents of their bags remain secure. If possible, keep valuables that would be hard to replace in a carry-on bag so they're always with you.
4. Protect Your Home Away from Home - Always lock up valuables when away from your room. If your hotel doesn't offer an in-room safe, bring your own portable 5900D SafeSpace to keep passports, jewelry and small electronics safe while you and your family are out and about.
5. Take Advantage of Technology - Advancements in technology continue to make travel both easier and safer. A smart idea for keeping kids safe is to take a cell phone picture of them every morning while on vacation. If something happens or if you get separated, you have a recent picture of him/her that shows the exact outfit they are wearing that day. Also, utilize the free Master Lock Vault app and website to store digital copies of important data such as travel documents, insurance cards, passports and medical information for easy access if paper documents are not readily available or are lost.
