When paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) travels to an isolated outpost in Antarctica for the expedition of a lifetime, she joins an international team that unearths a remarkable discovery. Our Thoughts

Mind Magic was a fun read! We enjoy magic shows and one very talented relative likes to perform magic tricks.  While I have no interest in performing, I have always wanted to know how the illusions are achieved.  To  me, knowing how it's achieved and being able to see the illusion created makes it an even more artful performance, rather than just blindly not knowing how it works.  I'm one of those people that just has to know, kind of like if my checkbook balance is off by a penny, I have to find it.

We attended a magic show in Branson years ago and it was fun to pick up on things; for example we could tell when a body double was being used, but there were many illusions we couldn't figure out - how do you make an entire car disappear in a split second?!?

The book is laid out where you read The Trick as the magician performs it, then Behind the Scenes, where the "how" is explained, and lastly, "The Performance" which helps you with your acting abilities as you perform the trick for others. Reading about the mathematics behind one of the tricks revealed in the book was eye-opening.  A good 20 years ago I used to know one trick well enough to perform it but never understood how it worked until now. Some of the other tricks in Mind Magic involve memorizing charts where specific verbiage is used.

Shortly after having read Mind Magic, I encountered a sweet cashier in a department store who took it upon himself to entertain my son & I with a trick.  Thanks to the book, I understood how it was performed (not that I was going to tell the magician that!) and it truly is an art form to have such a great performance perfected! I am very interested in reading more of Marc Lemezma's books to find out the "how" behind more illusions.

The film has been dubbed “a delightful tale” by the Dove Foundation, and has been awarded the Dove Family Seal of Approval. The Arctic Adventure: On Frozen Pond DVD will include an exclusive featurette titled “Giving the Characters a Voice: At the Recording Studio with Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox (creators of SMOSH), Ambyr Childers, and Jon Lovitz” when it hits the shelves for the suggested retail price of $19.98.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS
Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox (YouTube’s SMOSH) join Jon Lovitz (Hotel Transylvania) in this hilarious tale of brave frogs on a bold quest. For centuries, the Crystal Frog has protected the Frog Kingdom with its magic. But when sneaky One-Eye (Hecox) plots to steal the artifact and become King, it’s up to Freddy (Padilla) and the Frog Princess to make the arduous trek to the Holy Land. Through forest, desert, river rapids, and icy caverns, the bravery of the frozen warriors keeps this colorful saga hopping.

My Thoughts

Arctic Adventure: On Frozen Pond is a magical tale of warrior frogs who live on a magical pond. The pond is guarded by a magical artifact known as the Crystal Frog. When it's stolen by the evil One-Eye, the pond is thrown into chaos. The princess of the frogs and her group of friends head out on a quest to find the artifact and save their home.

This was a really cute movie with an original story line. So many movies today are retellings, and those are fun too, but this was new and refreshing. My children loved watching the cute little frogs as they journeyed into an icy world to save their pond. It's a fun adventure with plenty of funny moments and characters that will win your heart.

DVD Review: Deep Water

When a young gay man is brutally murdered near Bondi Beach, Detectives Tori Lustigman (Yael Stone, Orange Is the New Black) and Nick Manning (Noah Taylor, Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders) are assigned to investigate. After more bodies are found, Tori links the deaths to a series of murders of gay men in the 1980s and ’90s. Overlooked by police at the time, the crimes were reported as unexplained deaths, suicides, and disappearances, but Tori suspects they are all connected, despite her commanding officer’s (William McInnes, East West 101) calls for caution. Striving to bring closure to the victims’ families and haunted by the long-ago loss of her own brother, Tori’s fascination with the case soon turns to fixation.

Inspired by true events, this chilling miniseries is an “addictive…electrifying watch, with a cracking pace and several stirring performances” (DailyReview.com.au). Seamlessly blending a “sophisticated murder mystery” (TheNewDaily.com.au) with disturbing incidents from Australia’s recent past, Deep Water is a powerfully resonant and poignant crime drama. The terrific cast also includes Danielle Cormack (Wentworth), Jeremy Lindsay Taylor (The Diplomat), Craig McLachlan (The Doctor Blake Mysteries), and Dan Spielman (The Code).

My Thoughts

Deep Water is a mini-series set in Australia. The series is broken down into four fantastic episodes.  In the series, Detectives Tori Lustigman and Nick Manning are assigned to the murder of a gay man. Soon, his death is linked to a group of other murders from the 80s and 90s, and it's clear they are related. Those older crimes were considered suicides or disappearances, but now they know there may be a serial killer with hate on their mind who is  killing off gay men in the area.  Tori lost her brother under similar circumstances, and soon the case becomes an obsession for her. Can she find the killer before they strike again?

This was a great show, and sadly very realistic. I was just watching something on ID the other day about gay couples being murdered or attacked in Texas in the 90s, and the local government blamed the victims.  This series is also inspired by true events, and it gives us a good look at how hate  and prejudice can make people do some terrible things. If you'd like to grab a copy of this great mini-series for yourself, you can grab a copy on Amazon or Acorn Media.

DVD Review: Above Suspicion: The Complete Collection

ABOVE SUSPICION Complete Collection - “Superb—the best UK police drama in years” (The Times) - Kelly Reilly (True Detective 2, Flight) and Ciarán Hinds (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) star as detectives in the complete series of the gripping crime drama from the Prime Suspect creator, Lynda La Plante. Called a “younger, sassier successor to Prime Suspect” (The Telegraph), the series ran on ITV for four series from 2009-2012 but has not been broadcast in the U.S. (DVD 4-disc set). The entire series is also available to stream any time on Acorn TV.

My Thoughts
Above Suspicion brings you a spine-tingling collection of murder mysteries. There are four mysteries in this collection based on the novels by Lynda La Plante, and each one is like getting to watch a full length movie. The story revolves around a rookie detective named Anna Travis and her hard-nosed boss James Langton. The two of them overcome their differences long enough to gang up on London criminals. The four episodes in this box set include:

Above Suspicion : Anna is sent on a undercover investigation to help catch a gruesome murderer, but will the carnage she finds be more than she can handle?

The Red Dahlia : This one was inspired by actual events. There was a killer known for cutting his victims in half. Now when the same type of murderer makes a reappearance, the detectives suspect a copycat.

Deadly Intent :  An ex-cop is murdered in a crack house and his wife could be the next victim of the Mexican drug cartel.

Silent Scream : A celebrity is murdered and everyone around her is a suspect including her drug addict friends and scheming agent. There are a tons of guest stars in this episode.

I love this series. The mysteries were gripping and realistic. There is some nudity and a lot of graphic violence, so keep that in mind before you watch. However, if you like a good thriller, this is a series you'll want to watch.  There is also at ton of bonus material including behind the scene segments and cast interviews. This box set gives you the opportunity to see a variety of great mysteries and a full cast of outstanding actors!  It's a marathon worth seeing! If you'd like to pick up a copy of this DVD collection for your personal library, you can find it on Acorn Media for only $59.99. It's also available on Amazon.

Review: Noble Vines

Noble Vines
Not All Vines Are Created Equal

Over centuries, vintners have carefully singled out the most admired vines, naming each vine with a unique number to identify its exceptional attributes. Here in California, we've planted a selection of these vines exactly where they will flourish best: in select locations on the red soils and cobblestones of our family-owned vineyard in Lodi and on the gentle slopes of our cool-climate estate in Monterey.  Our wines honor these treasured vines and the blocks in which they are grown, chosen because their refined, classic qualities have stood the test of time.

Noble Vines offers a portfolio of six wine varietals that make for delicious wine pairings: 337 Cabernet Sauvignon, 181 Merlot, 446 Chardonnay, 667 Pinot Noir, 1 Red Blend, and 242 Sauvignon Blanc.Thinking about what to serve for Easter brunch and dinner?  Noble Vines' chef has created three brunch recipes & wine pairings:

EDAMAME HUMMUS CROSTINI WITH GREEK YOGURT, PRESERVED LEMON & MINTPair with refreshing and fresh {Noble Vines} 242 Sauvignon Blanc

Makes 24 pieces

Crostini:
3 ea pita bread, each cut into 8 triangles
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
½ tsp salt
pinch ground pepper

Hummus:
12 oz frozen shelled edamame
2 cl garlic
2 tbs tahini
3 tbs fresh lemon juice
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
¾ tsp salt
½ tsp ground cumin

Garnish:
1 preserved lemon (or zest of 1 fresh lemon)
5 oz plain Greek yogurt
10 leaves mint, finely chopped
  • Preheat oven to 375f and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a bowl toss pita triangles with oil, salt and pepper. Arrange in a single layer on baking sheet and cook until brown and crisp, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Place Hummus ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and puree until very smooth. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, as needed to reach the desired consistency.
  • Remove the center and pith of the preserved lemon and discard. Finely mince the skin. Combine with yogurt and mint.
  • Spread hummus on each of the pita chips and spoon a bit of yogurt on top. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
Make Ahead: Hummus and yogurt can be made up to 3 days in advance and refrigerated

ASPARAGUS AND MOREL HASH
Serve with balanced and lush {Noble Vines} 667 Pinot Noir
Serves 8
3 slice apple-wood smoked bacon, diced
1 ½ lb potatoes, cooked and diced
3 tbs olive oil
2 cl garlic, chopped
½ onion, diced
4 oz dried morel mushrooms, soaked in ½ cup warm water
½ fennel bulb, diced
1/2 red bell pepper, diced
1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and diced
3 tbs finely chopped fresh parsley
salt and pepper, to taste
  • In a large sauté pan cook bacon until crisp. Add potatoes and cook until crisp and well browned. Transfer to a platter and keep warm in the oven.
  • In the same pan, heat the oil and add the garlic and onion. Sauté 2-3 minutes.
  • Drain the morels and discard the liquid.
  • Add morels, fennel, pepper and asparagus to the onion mixture and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes more.
  • Combine vegetable mixture with potato mixture, toss with parsley and season to taste with salt and pepper.
MAKE AHEAD CHEESE SOUFFLE
Serve with creamy and bright {Noble Vines} 446 Chardonnay

Serves 8

¼ cup room temperature butter
1 oz butter
3 tbs flour
1 cup milk
2 tsp Dijon mustard
5 oz grated cheese, about 1 cup
4 egg yolks
salt and pepper to taste
7 egg whites
  • Using room temperature butter, coat the inside of 8 six-ounce ramekins.
  • In a small saucepan melt butter, whisk in flour and cook for 2 minutes. Add milk, whisking constantly, and simmer until thick, about 2 minutes more. Remove from heat, stir in mustard, cheese and yolks. Season to taste with salt and pepper and transfer to a large mixing bowl. Cool to room temperature.
  • Whisk whites to soft peaks. Gently fold whites, one-third at a time, into cheese sauce, gently folding together until combined.
  • Pour mixture into prepared molds, arrange refrigerate for up to 4 hours before baking.
  • Preheat oven to 375f. Bring a kettle of water to a boil.
  • Place soufflés into 2 9x13-roasting pans and place in the oven. Pour the boiling water into the pan so that it comes half way up the ramekins. Bake until puffed and golden, about 20-25 minutes. Do not open the oven door during cooking.
  • Remove from water bath and serve immediately.
Make Ahead: In addition to being made ahead, once soufflés are baked they can be held in the water bath for up to 10 minutes before serving.

Our Thoughts
I like to try different wines.  I'm never sure what I'm going to like beyond sweet red wines, which are my favorite.  Noble Vines sent me the 181 Merlot and the 242 Sauvignon Blanc. It was a difficult choice narrowing it down to two samples!  Now, I'm not much of a wine drinker, I mainly like to cook with wines, exploring the different subtle flavors with each recipe.

181 is classic Bordeaux-style Merlot, elegantly opening with aromas of cherry, blackberry and sweet herbs. Fresh fruit flavors of black cherry and ripe plum fuse seamlessly with hints of spice leading to a lingering and luxurious finish. With balanced tannins and acidity, this medium-bodied wine is a perfect companion to oven-roasted turkey, Italian sausage, braised short ribs and mild to medium hard cheeses like Port Salut, Edam and Gouda.

242 Sauvignon Blanc exhibits vibrant aromas of white peach, green melon and lemongrass. Medium bodied with a round mid palate and bright acidity, this refreshing wine offers flavors of guava, passion fruit and a hint of lemon zest.
The 242 I thought had a bright initial bite with a smooth, pleasant finish.  The 181 definitely had a darker flavor than the 242.  I could have sworn I tasted a hint of cocoa in there too!  Whether or not that's actually in there I don't know, but it reminded me of cocoa.  I'll be trying the 242 with my next lemon-chicken creation, and the 181 with some beef. New wines always give me great recipe ideas!

Our Thoughts
I love to cook, and when I use pepper, I refuse to use anything but fresh-ground pepper. Store-bought ready-ground is just so . . . stale. There's nothing quite like the aroma of fresh ground pepper! I've been using one of those little coffee/herb grinders to grind a small amount of peppercorns as needed, then transferring the pepper to a container for use.  I've been on the lookout for a pepper grinder that meets my needs.
Awhile ago, my mom gifted me some sea salt in coarse grain form.  The salt crystals are a little too big to use directly on food where just a little bit is required, and my coffee/herb grinder would grind it too fine for my liking.  It's just been sitting there, waiting to be used.  One of my best friends has a salt grinder, and I've been on the lookout for one of those too! There are some dishes that having coarse ground sea salt adds just the right touch.
The Ozeri Duo Ultra Salt & Pepper Grinder definitely meets my needs!  I like that I can have both salt and pepper in ONE grinder, eliminating the need for two separate grinders.  I can grind just salt, just pepper, or both of them together at the same time.  The instructions are very helpful in how to fill and use the grinder.  It's also very durable, which is always a plus in my kitchen!  Stylish, too.  The only thing I don't like about it is the way the bottom is designed.  The way the plastic is, it creates a little lip all around the inside and that seems to be where a lot of the freshly ground salt/pepper lands, rather than out on the food, so after you're done grinding, you may want to shake it a bit to get the hidden particles out.

An oversized control knob promises optimal customization to create an endless array of healthy homemade foods and beverages.  Protein drinks, green smoothies, dips, dressings, spreads, sauces and salsas are just the beginning.

Our Thoughts

This is one awesome blender! It honestly sounds like a plane is taking off when it's on the highest setting, it's really neat. There is a lot of space in this blender, I can't imagine filling this thing to the top with anything I'm making, it's really larger than it seems. I made a smoothie and thought I just made a little bit but it just kept coming out! A lot really hides down there where the blades are.

This is not an annoying blender that you have to twist on and off the base in order to turn it on. No more messes when you have a blender filled with liquids and it sloshes over when it twists off, it just easily sits on and you just as easily pull it off.

It works quite well, it will turn your ice cubes to mush in a matter of seconds, I know I'm not going to spend 15 minutes making a smoothie. That device it came with to push down the inside is so nifty, I don't necessarily have to stop the blender to get what comes to the top pushed back down, just make sure you turn it off if you're pushing it all the way down obviously.

Now the reason my last blender went bye-bye was it was a disaster to clean and I just gave up one day. Not with this one. Since you can make hot soups in it, why not  hot water. We pour hot water in the blender and turned it on and it shot up water all over the side and liquefied all the stuck on food! A simple soapy wipe down and rinse and it was clean.

There are different settings on the Oster Versa blender, one specifically for smoothies, soups, dips/spreads. I had no idea you could make dips or spreads in a blender and I love love love dips and spreads. The blender came with two recipes books for each setting (smoothies, soups, dips/spreads) and oh my word... so simple to make and they look amazing!

I am really loving this blender, it's definitely becoming one of my favorite kitchen accessories!
