DISH Confronts Historic Low Satisfaction with Pay-TV, Kicks off “Tuned In To You” Promise with New Campaign
DISH today shared its vision to confront the low customer satisfaction pervasive throughout the pay-TV industry. To redefine its relationship with customers, DISH is doubling down on a company-wide commitment to listen, in an industry that does not. This sentiment is captured in DISH’s newly launched “Tuned In To You™” promise and accompanying “Spokeslistener™” campaign.
“Customers just want to be heard in an industry that has forsaken its ability to listen,” said Erik Carlson, DISH president and chief operating officer. “‘Tuned In To You’ is more than a marketing slogan. It’s a company-wide rallying cry and a long-term business philosophy. DISH has a history of putting our customers first and taking bold steps to make TV better. We are at our best when we listen to and fight for what our customers want.”
DISH has served as a disruptive force since its 1980 emergence cemented satellite television as viable competition to the cable industry, ultimately driving innovation and lower prices. This tradition continued with DISH as the first pay-TV provider to offer a DVR, and more recently with an abundance of advancements like AutoHop, conflict-free TV with Hopper 3, Netflix on Hopper DVRs, DISH Anywhere, HopperGO, as well as the My Tech tool’s reliable 75-minute arrival windows. Further, the company has consistently fought for lower prices and customizable programming options, including its 2-Year Price Guarantee, Flex Pack™ skinny bundle and live over-the-top service, Sling TV.
DISH is examining every customer touchpoint, across all departments, to evolve the delivery of customer service throughout its nationwide workforce. These efforts are exemplified by the October launch of “Base Camp,” an immersive training program that taps into the deep understanding that frontline employees have of DISH’s customer base.
Through Base Camp, corporate employees work in the field for one month to gain practical experience supporting new and existing customers. Participants field customer calls from billing inquiries to tech troubleshooting to sales inquiries from prospective customers. They spend full business days accompanying DISH’s professional technicians to observe the in-home services completed daily.
“The notion that management should roll back its sleeves and work with its customer base is almost unheard of in corporate America,” said Carlson. “But we can’t possibly fulfill on our ‘Tuned In To You’ promise without a working knowledge of our customers and the interactions they have with our brand.”
DISH expects to graduate 700 employees – including senior leaders – from Base Camp by year end. All interns and full-time new hires at DISH’s headquarters complete Base Camp within the first two months of their employment, while a plan is in place for all existing corporate team members to enroll in the training.
“Base Camp was one of the most eye-opening and educational experiences I’ve had during my tenure at DISH,” said Warren Schlichting, DISH executive vice president of media sales, marketing and programming. “One by one, Base Camp is instilling into the members of our headquarters team a ‘Tuned In To You’ mentality and a sense of urgency to improve our customer experience.”
An immediate change consumers will see is DISH prominently featuring feedback forms across every DISH.com webpage. While the company has always sought feedback, it’s now proactively asking TV lovers to share the ideas they see as capable of improving the customer experience. These real-time insights are distributed to designated leaders throughout the DISH business for review and potential implementation.
DISH and the Spokeslistener
With internal changes underway, DISH’s “Tuned In To You” promise kicked off today with a new multimillion dollar campaign – “The Spokeslistener” – that challenges the traditional spokesperson convention commonly used in television advertisements. DISH, with creative agency Camp + King, launched a series of television, radio and digital advertisements that illustrate the common frustrations experienced by pay-TV customers and the solutions offered by DISH.
“A spokesman talks at you, while a Spokeslistener listens to and communicates with you,” said Jay Roth, DISH senior vice president and chief marketing officer. “It’s a demonstration of our commitment to acknowledge common customer frustrations, and then take the appropriate action to provide meaningful solutions.”
DISH’s first two Spokeslistener spots are rolling out on local network affiliates (ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox) today in more than 150 markets nationwide. Watch the spots here and here. The company will introduce additional ads in the coming months.

DISH today introduced a new holiday-giving initiative called "Dollars for Downloads" to benefit the Marine Toys for Tots Program. For every DISH Anywhere app that customers download to compatible devices this December, DISH will donate $1 to Toys for Tots, helping the organization in its mission of delivering toys, books and a message of hope to underserved children.
"We're excited to partner with Toys for Tots and give back to the communities DISH customers know and love," said Jay Roth, DISH chief marketing officer. "By simply downloading the free DISH Anywhere app, our customers can join us in supporting the holiday dreams of thousands of children this season."

"Downloading our free app this holiday season helps to spread joy to thousands of Toys for Tots kids, with the added benefit of access to TV while on-the-go at places like malls and airports."
Toys for Tots has been delivering toys, books and other gifts to disadvantaged children since 1947. The program presently distributes an average of 18 million gifts annually, touching the lives of more than 251 million children across 800 communities nationwide in its 71-year history.
Dollars for Downloads is a DISH Cares initiative, supporting the program's focus on military support and youth empowerment. DISH, Independa transform in-home entertainment and care experiences for senior living
DISH and Independa, the global leader in remote engagement technologies, are transforming the way people interact with entertainment and healthcare services, whether at home or in senior living communities. Today at the Connected Health Summit, the companies announced that DISH's voice remote is now compatible with the Independa AnyTV Companion. When the Independa system is connected to a television installed with DISH's Wally receiver, users can easily control both their TV entertainment and Independa services with DISH's voice remote.
Launched in 2016, the Independa AnyTV Companion is a candy bar-sized set-back box that turns any TV with an HDMI connection into a bi-directional engagement platform for residential homes and organizations focused on senior living, home care, behavioral health and addiction recovery.
With Independa's award-winning technology, users can schedule appointments, receive medication reminders, engage with others via video chat and messaging, and stay up-to-date on community information, like dining menus and event calendars, directly on their television. The platform is also compatible with health sensors and devices, like blood pressure monitors and scales, providing organizations and loved ones with a holistic view of the Independa user.
"Television is the main source of entertainment and news for many older Americans," said Alistair Chatwin, vice president of DISH Business. "By combining the Independa system with our technology, we're turning the TV into a solution that delivers services to help provide a better quality of life, as well as operational efficiencies for organizations in senior care."
"Parks Associates research reports 29 percent of seniors age 65 and older find it appealing to have a video consultation with a doctor directly through their TV," said Elizabeth Parks, senior vice president at Parks Associates. "TV-enabled video solutions allow access to in-home care experiences for seniors who want to stay independent in their homes."
DISH's voice remote interprets natural language to control navigation, search and content selection on Wally. It also features motion-activated backlighting and two custom buttons: one to launch the Independa system and the other to signal professionals and loved ones for support.
"Independa and DISH are delivering an industry first, where a second remote is not needed for the operation of the Independa system," said Kian Saneii, founder and CEO of Independa. "Simplicity and ease of use are key factors here, and DISH customers can now enjoy all the benefits of an Independa system right on their TVs, without the need for a computer, tablet or smartphone. No passwords, no software updates – nothing new to learn."

DISH delivers Netflix to hotel TVs with EVOLVE
Picture this. You’re staying at a hotel and want to unwind for the night, but you can’t find anything to watch on TV. You consider pulling up your Netflix account on your smartphone or tablet to pick up where you left off in GLOW, but feel like watching it on a bigger screen. Enter EVOLVE®.
EVOLVE is DISH’s hospitality TV solution that combines streaming apps, live TV and casting into one platform, giving you the ability to choose what content you watch on the big screen in your hotel room. And today, we’re expanding EVOLVE’s personalization options by adding Netflix.
If you’re one of the millions of Americans watching Netflix, you’ll soon be able to access your personal account directly from the hotel TV. This means that you can easily pick up the series you’ve been watching at home from the comfort of your hotel room.
If you’re staying in a hotel powered by EVOLVE, you can easily sign into your existing Netflix account or subscribe to Netflix via the on-screen menu. You can also cast your own Netflix content from your mobile device to your room’s TV. Once you check out, your account information will be cleared from the system.
Netflix will be available on EVOLVE in the coming months, and it is already available on DISH home receivers.
