RAKE, Series 5 DVD

The final season of award-winning Australian comedy-drama RAKE, Series 5 debuts on DVD on April 2, 2019 from Acorn TV. In a Silver Logie award-winning role, Richard Roxburgh (Moulin Rouge!, Hacksaw Ridge) is Cleaver Greene, a brilliant barrister battling self-destructive tendencies. As a lawyer, Cleaver prefers to defend those who are utterly hopeless and probably guilty; his clients include murderers, bigamists, and even cannibals. Despite his roguish ways, Cleaver's wit and charm have won him many cases and loyal friends over the years. The DVD 3-Disc Set features 8 episodes, plus a bonus behind-the-scenes featurette ($39.99, Amazon.com). Rake, Series 5 was also featured in October 2018 on Acorn TV. Called a “glorious streaming service… an essential must-have” (The Hollywood Reporter), Acorn TV is North America’s most popular and largest streaming service focused on British and international television.

The final season of this “ever-sparkling comedic drama” (The Guardian, Australia) tackles the contentious world of politics, with disbarred lawyer Cleaver Greene (Richard Roxburgh) having won an Australian Senate seat on a campaign promise to do nothing. But even Cleaver’s low expectations fall short of the absurd reality, as he contends with a right-wing nemesis (Jane TurnerKath & Kim), a noxious gas attack believed to be the work of terrorists, and a disastrous visit from the US defense secretary (Anthony LaPagliaWithout a Trace). Can Cleaver outmaneuver his cutthroat colleagues, or will his self-destructive behavior destroy his budding new career?

Featuring biting wit, inedible characters, and sharp social commentary, this “smart, cheeky, and funny” (Newcastle Herald, Australia) series also stars Matt Day (Muriel’s Wedding), Sara Wiseman (A Place to Call Home), Jacek Koman (Jack Irish), Erroll Shand(Mystery Road), Mark Mitchinson (Dear Murderer), and William McInnes (East West 101).

My Thoughts

Rake is an exciting  Australian series from Acorn Media. It centers around defense attorney Richard Roxburgh. He prides himself on defending bad guys: really bad guys, including terrorists and murderers!  His personal life is messy too. He's constantly in debt and always after the wrong women. This fifth season had eight awesome episodes.

Greene v The World - Cleaver makes a speech that leads the governor to resign. There's a gas attack at the Parliament House.

Greene v The United States - The America defense secretary vanishes after hanging out with Cleaver. The secret service tries to frame him for sexting.

Evans v Greene  - Cleaver comes dressed as a zebra to a political party and he upsets one of the senators.

Gold & Greene v Red - Cleaver is served with a defamation suit. Parliament argues over ice cream.

Green v Diaries - Cleaver meets a video game lobbyist at a rugby game. He is also being pressed to vote for a treaty.

Greene v The Unflushables - Cleaver the plumbing issues at home which gets him involved with a gas-explosion cover up.

Greene v Midwinter - War with China seems like a possibility and the politicians get ready for a winter ball.

Greene v The Reckoning - Cleaver gets kicked out after causing issues with Chinese diplomacy.

I really enjoyed this show. Cleaver is really a rake, just as the titles implies, but he has me crushing on him just the same! Each episode was packed full of adventure, and I always enjoy seeing the judges in those white wigs.  There is a lot of violence in the series, so make sure the kiddos are asleep before you pop in this disc. Overall, an exciting third season, and I can't wait to see what happens in Series 5. If you want to  grab a copy of this DVD for yourself, you can purchase one on Acorn Media or on Amazon.
