Wentworth, Season 3 DVD

Critically-acclaimed Australian prison drama Wentworth, Season 3 makes its DVD debut on June 6, 2017 from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. Fans of the iconic Prisoner series, which pushed boundaries over three decades ago and still boasts a loyal following worldwide today, will remember Bea Smith as gutsy and fearless, ruling Wentworth Correctional Centre with an iron fist. Wentworth, Season 3 stars Danielle Cormack (Xena: Warrior Princess, Deep Water, Rake) as Bea Smith. The 4-Disc set features 12 episodes, plus behind-the-scenes featurettes (44 min.) and a photo gallery ($59.99, AcornOnline.com).Wentworth, Season 3 premiered on Soho in Australia in 2015.

The women of Wentworth Prison face a high-stakes power struggle in Season 3 of the internationally acclaimed Australian drama. After receiving a life sentence without parole, Bea Smith (Cormack) assumes the mantle of top dog and asserts her dominance over the other inmates, including Franky Doyle (Nicola da SilvaRush), who finds herself more vulnerable than ever before. Enlisting the help of both prisoners and officers, Bea wages war with sadistic governor Joan “The Freak” Ferguson (Pamela RabeThe Secret Life of Us) but does not anticipate the collateral damage her schemes may cause.

This award-winning drama boasts “tense direction, sleek editing, and punchy writing… [with] extraordinary acting performances” (The Globe and Mail, Canada). The fantastic ensemble cast also includes Kate Atkinson (Jack Irish), Robbie Magasiva (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers), Socratis Otto (The Diplomat), and Aaron Jeffrey (McLeod’s Daughters).

My Thoughts

In Wentworth, Bea Smith is a women pushed to the edge. When she kills her abusive husband, she finds herself in prison with some pretty tough women. Refusing to let anyone ever hurt her again, this former house wife and mother becomes one of the top dogs at the prison. Season three is broken down into twelve exiting episodes.

The Governor's Pleasure  - Bea gets a lifetime sentence and the governor is out to get her.

Failing Upwards - Liz has family trouble and alliances are breaking down in the prison.

Knives Out - The knives might come out when several inmates aren't getting along. A guard is also causing some trouble.

Righteous Acts- Someone is out for revenge. Liz's family issues continue, and a guard is suspected of wrong doing.

Mercy - Bea plans to take down Ferguson and agrees to visit Kaz Proctor to try to stop some of the violence.

Evidence - Jodie's accusations of abuse causes problems for the Governor, but after Bea is kidnapped Jodie's story crumbles.
The Long Game - Bea learns she was drugged, and smuggles DNA samples out. Franky makes a shocking confession.

Goldfish - Doreen goes into labor while helping Bea with Ferguson.

Freak Show - Ferguson is still dealing with Jodie's accusations and has Bridget removed. Doreen is in for hard times with her newborn and Bea gets a surprising helping hand from Fletch.

A Higher Court - Franky is up for parole. Her former lover plants drugs in her cell, but she has a plan.

The Living and the Dead - Ferguson ends her mentorship of Vera thanks to Bea, but knowing that Ferguson is crazy she hopes to take her place.

Blood & Fire - Fetch and Vera gang up on Ferguson. Franky prepares for release, and Bea thinks she's solved Harry's murder.

This is a great series about an issue that is very realistic. We hear too often about women who are victims of domestic violence who go to prison when they finally fight back. I look forward to seeing what happens as this series progresses, and I do hope that eventually Bea gets out of prison. Though I never saw the original series in the 80s, I definitely enjoyed this one.  As a huge Xena fan, I was also exited to see Danielle Cormack back on the small screen. If you'd like to check out this fantastic series, you can find it online at Acorn Media or on Amazon.
