Review: Adult Coloring Books

Coloring is a favorite pastime of kids everywhere. We all spent hours during our childhoods filling page after page, sometimes with iffy results. Still, we had fun and it fulfilled our creative sides. Somewhere along the way, most of us grow up and feel that coloring books are a thing that we have to set aside as we take on adult responsibilities.

Those who continue to enjoy coloring (and the stress-relief benefits) are often left to choose between a selection of books featuring cartoon characters that don’t challenge the part of our brains that has far outgrown the big pictures. That’s where companies like Barron's are stepping in with lines of coloring books specifically for adults.

These are definitely not the pictures we grew up coloring! The images in these books are intricate, making them challenging to fill in. I love the fact they are so detailed; it allows me to really focus on what I am doing. My personal favorite of the books I received to try is the “Color Yourself Calm”.

“Color Yourself Calm” is a book that contains images of a more spiritual nature. Each page comes with a companion image already filled in so you get an idea of how the image should look. Messages are also printed on the bottom relating to mindfulness and other spiritual ideas. I love that because it gives you something to meditate on while you color. I think the combination is a great way to meditate and allow your subconscious mind to come through.

If you’re itching to let your inner child out to play, I’d recommend picking up some of these books. It seriously took me back and was a blast to work with the books.

This is so funny; While grocery shopping, I got a call from my 17 year old asking for a coloring book. I purchased her a Dr. Seuss Lorax book but I wish I'd seen/heard of the adult coloring book. It's something I'm going to purchase for future use.
