DVD Review: Lovejoy Series 6

Called “The James Bond of antiques dealers” (The New York Times), LOVEJOY: Complete Collection features all 72 star-studded episodes of the hit BBC series. Ian McShane (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) stars as Lovejoy, a mischievous antiques dealer with a heart of gold. Alongside his friends Lady Jane Felsham (Phyllis Logan, Downton Abbey), Tinker (Dudley Sutton), and Eric (Chris Jury), Lovejoy gets himself into many sticky situations, but never loses his lighthearted charm. Lovejoy has featured many of the top British actors, including Michael Kitchen (Foyle’s War), Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous), Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting), Martin Clunes (Doc Martin), Neil Dudgeon (Midsomer Murders), John Gielgud (Arthur), Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton), and James Nesbitt (The Missing, The Hobbit). Series 6, the final season, is also available in an individual DVD set.

My Thoughts

Lovejoy mixes the world of antiques with the world of crime and this man can spot a shady criminal as easily as he can spot a forgery. He might be a little bit of a rogue, but he also has a good heart. Series 6 includes 10 exciting episodes that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Fair Exchange - Lovejoy & Charlotte argue over an 18th-century Polish painting. Lovejoy goes out drinking and wakes to to charges of theft.

Day of Reckoning - Charlotte is kidnapped my one of Lovejoy's enemies and he must find her before she gets killed.

Somewhere over the Rainbow - Tinker goes missing after he and Lovejoy have an argument and Lovejoy sets out on a journey to find him and discovers a lot about Tinker's past.

Double Edged Sword - Lovejoy is "hired" by a thug to track down a stolen Samurai sword.

Guns & Roses - Lovejoy goes to have an antique gun cleaned by an expert and gets in the middle of a battle with his landlord.

The Last of the Uzkoks - Charlotte is preparing to auction off a Geek artifact, but several people claim to own it. Lovejoy is enlisted to prove who it belongs to.

Breaking the Broker - A sea captain is suspected of smuggling religious artifacts, and the police want Lovejoy to help catch him

Fruit of the Desert - Lovejoy is offered a bounty of Islamic artifacts for a steal, but the only way to secure them could jeopardize his relationship with his daughter.

Holding the Baby - Lovejoy scores a Regency cabinet for a very low price, but Beth is conned into giving it away.

Last Tango in Lavenham - The series finale is filled with surprises. Beth gets a new job offer, Tinker is ready to move on, and Charlotte is thinking marriage.

This was such a great series. It has all the mystery without a lot of forensics, making it a fun and entertaining watch.  It's like a combination of Antique Roadshow and Murder She Wrote I love the series, but I still miss Lady Jane and Eric. Charlotte is okay, but its hard adjust to a new character. The show just isn't the same without the original cast members. Overall though, I am still sad to see this series come to an end. You can order Lovejoy Series 6 on DVD for only $49.99 at Acorn Media or on Amazon.
