As parents, we want to protect our families from any possible harm, but increasingly available technology has made that a tough job. If you and your family use a laptop with a built-in web camera, then webcam hacking is a very real concern. Fortunately, it is threat we can prevent.
Covering the webcam is a simple fix, but stickers and Post-It notes are too easily removed, especially by the curious hands of children. Instead, the new discrete, always-on solution from SpiShutter ensures privacy by allowing users to physically block the embedded webcam on a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air laptop.
It has an opening in the center of the strip that lets you easily enable your webcam by sliding the strip left or right, and then block the camera when not in use. Designed to stay on your computer at all times, even when the lid is closed, SpiShutter is the easiest way to cover and uncover your camera. The low-friction powder coating also prevents the screen from any scratches, and leaves no residue.
SpiShutter retails for $19.99 and is available now on Amazon and SpiShutter.com in three colors - black, silver, and yellow. Check it out here on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I1CN3YY

Our Thoughts
As a parent of a "tween" it's been increasingly important for us to be able to control where and what Rob does online. I mean, come on, we've all seen those Dateline episodes where they catch the predators; that's what I think of when it comes to internet safety in our house. Now, let me add that my hubby is a System Admin and is a tech geek of the highest kind so he's locked down our internet sufficiently but there is always that slight chance of a breech.
With the SpiShutter, yes, the kids can still move it and expose the webcam on my MacBook Pro. They'll be able to find ways around anything that we put in place for their safety if they think about it long enough. However, as long as I'm sitting within eye sight, they will not be able to accidentally (or not so accidentally) open the webcam on themselves.
The SpiShutter is a great idea. It's sleek, matches my MacBook Pro (these do come in silver, yellow and black), and because it's powder coated it will not scratch my aluminum top case. For us, the $19.99 that it costs to get one is a no-brainer. I think as the kids get older, we'll want more of these just to have as a precaution.
You can find the SpiShutter on SpiShutter.com or Amazon. You can also follow them on Twitter and Facebook!

I've never thought about webcam hacking before, but I guess it's possible and probably happens more often than you know. This is a great idea! It's better to be safe than sorry!
I notice you mention Macbook, do the se work with all laptops?
