But what he finds are secrets that won’t stay buried. Adare is swept into the private world of wealthy land baron Samson Flusky (John Hallam, The Pallisers) and his mentally unbalanced wife, Lady Henrietta (Lisa Harrow, Kavanagh Q.C.). The gruff, unmannered Flusky hopes the well-bred Adare can bring Henrietta out of her mysterious dark moods and back into society. But her manic behavior masks something unspeakable. As Adare attempts to help this haunted woman, greed, jealousy, and a secret passion threaten to destroy them both.

My Thoughts

This movie was originally made in 1980 and I'm so glad it was put on DVD so I got a chance to watch it. Based on a novel by Helen Simpson, the story is set is 1831 and revolves around an Irishman named Charles Adare. He journeys to Wales in the hopes of making a quick buck, but instead finds himself swept up in the secret world of a wealthy baron. The baron's wife is suffering from mental illness, and he hopes the charming Adare will be able to help bring her out of it. But Lady Henrietta has good reason for wanting to escape reality and when those secrets emerge, Adare will have to choose between his fortune and his heart.

This film has it all. Thrilling secrets, spicy romance scenes, and even the stunning backdrop set in Australia. The costumes are beautiful and true to the time period and every actor gives a stellar performance. This was my first experience with this story, but I found it so intriguing I plan on looking for the book as well as the 1949 Alfred Hitchcock version of the film.

If you'd like to check out this fantastic historical thriller, Under Capricorn is available on Acorn Media for only $39.99.
