The Home Apothecary
by Stacey Dugliss-Wesselman
Cold Spring Apothecary's Cookbook of Handcrafted Remedies and Recipies for the Hair, Skin, Body & Home

An apothecary is a skilled craftsperson who compounds herbal mixtures that enhance health and beauty. Put aside the modern world of tricky marketing and harmful chemicals and create your own apothecary solutions. They’re fresh, safe, and effective—and many are made from the wholesome ingredients already in your kitchen and garden.

Inside you’ll find:

  • Skin Care 101: How to make cleansers, scrubs, creams and lotions, tonics, and toners for oily, dry, sensitive, or combination skin—along with acne treatments, natural sunscreen, lip balm, and more
  • Body care recipes for homemade body scrubs, massage oil, body powder, and toothpaste
  • Remedies for what ails you, including healing cough syrups, compresses, teas, and tinctures
  • Hair care recipes for dry, normal, or oily hair—add shine, clear up dandruff, and control thinning and volume
  • Recipes for the home, including Kitchen Sink Scrub, Drawer Refresher, and Fly Deterrent
  • Plus, get inspired at your farmers’ market and explore seasonal recipes for a Pumpkin Mask, Cucumber Toner, and more!

All The Beauty Nature Has To Offer

The chemicals that make common commercial products function are often bad for both your body and the environment. The cosmetics industry pours vast amounts of these chemicals into their personal care products because, to date, there is little or no required testing, monitoring of health effects, or even labeling requirements to prevent them from doing so and the general public is often unaware of their usage entirely.

Stacey Dugliss-Wesselman launched Cold Spring Apothecary, a line of health, beauty, and home products that adhere to sustainable practices for people and the planet. Cold Spring Apothecary’s goal is to provide their customers with the safest alternatives to the harmful chemicals used in most cosmetics. In Cold Spring, NY, Stacey produces all of the products herself in small batches to ensure that only the highest quality ingredients are used. And instead of harmful synthetic chemicals, organic ingredients are the cornerstone of each product. Cold Spring Apothecary continually researches and adds to their ingredient list making sure they are using the best and latest green alternative ingredients they can.

Stacey was the recipient of a Daily Candy Start Small, Go Big entrepreneur award in 2011. She lives in Hudson Valley, NY.

Our Thoughts:
I make all our soaps, lotions, and salves for our family.  I strive to keep our home product usage as natural as I can.  The Home Apothecary is a great addition to my collection of books on herbs, essential oils, and home remedies!

I really wish I could show you the inside of this book.  The photography is gorgeous, the layout is beautiful, all in all it's a very well put together book. Very clean, very crisp presentation.  Did I mention I love the photos?!?!?  Most of my books have only hand-drawn illustrations of the plants, if any pictures at all.

The Home Apothecary is geared more for the beginner to intermediate practitioner, with a lot of explanation on uses and preparation techniques.  I really appreciate there's not only sections on herbs, essential oils, carrier oils, preparation techiques, and recipes; there's also a glossary, an appendix, index, and a resources page!  And it's very reasonably priced!  If I saw this in the bookstore, I don't think there's any way I could have passed it by!

There are a lot of recipes in here I plan to try for myself - some I've already tweaked for my own needs, and it's given me fabulous ideas for different herbs/essential oils to try!
