Book Review: Little Miss Muffet by Iza Trapani

About the Author

Iza Trapani was just seven years old when she and her mother left Warsaw, Poland, for the United States. An award-winning writer and illustrator, Trapani's work has been featured on PBS Storytime and at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She also received the Rip Van Winkle Award, presented by the School Library Media Specialists of Southeastern New York, for her contribution to children's literature.  My Thoughts

Little Miss Muffet takes a classic nursery rhyme and turns it into a full length picture book kids everywhere are going to love. In this beautifully illustrated story, Little Miss Muffet still gets scared away by a spider while trying to enjoy a meal, but that is only the beginning of her trails. Soon a mouse is sneaking up on her, a frog attacks in the garden, and a cawing crow gives her a big fight. No matter where she goes, this timid girl finds some animal is out to get her. The poor thing even falls off her canoe when a fish jumps out at her, but in the end she finally does get to relax a bit and enjoy her curds and whey, making it a happy ending after all.

My daughter really enjoyed this extended version of Little Miss Muffet. It has the kind of humor all kids will enjoy and bright and colorful illustrations to go along with them. At the back of the book, they even include music so you can sing all the lyrics as you read. The notes are simple enough that my older kids were able to play them on their flutes while my toddler and I sang along. That little bonus definitely made it fun for the whole family.
