***Complimentary product received in exchange for an honest review***
Sizzling with wit, camaraderie, and chemistry among its stars, Britain’s highest-rated TV drama, New Tricks, Season 9, debuts on DVD from Acorn on June 25, 2013. Led by Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redman, Sexy Beast, Honest), the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad’s beautiful, younger boss, the old dogs have solved cold cases with classic policing skills for years. This season, the gang copes with a new member (Emmy® nominee Denis Lawson, Bleak House, original Star Wars trilogy) after Jack Halford (James Bolam) retires. New Tricks has run on the BBC for nine seasons since 2003 and has already been renewed for a tenth season. The series has enjoyed ongoing broadcast exposure in North America on select PBS stations; however the DVD set features the unedited UK edition, which includes more than five minutes per episode not seen on public television, plus a bonus behind-the-scenes featurette (10 episodes, $39.99, AcornOnline.com).
For
eight years, the old dogs of the Unsolved Crime and Open Case
Squad—veteran detectives Jack Halford (James Bolam), Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong,
Garrow’s Law), and Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman, The Sweeney)—have
been a close-knit team. Then Jack drops a bombshell: he’s quitting.
Retiring. And this time, he means it. Before long, Sandra finds a
replacement in retired detective
Steve McAndrew (Denis Lawson). A chatty, enthusiastic Scot, Steve
treads on toes but gives the hit British series a “charm injection” (Huffington Post, U.K.).
Season Nine guest stars include
James Wilby (Island at War, Gosford Park), Sharon Small (The Inspector Lynley Mysteries),
Kerry Fox (Cloudstreet), and Tim McInnerny (Blackadder) as intelligence agent Stephen Fisher.

My Thoughts
I have always been a fan of crime television. There is something about a good murder mystery that really gets your adrenaline pumping. New Tricks, Series Nine gives you 590 minutes of back to back action that will leave you at the edge of your seat. The season starts out with one of the old characters retiring and a new member taking his place. This of course causes a little bit of tension but before long things run smoothly. The season runs the gamut of cases from the traditional murder to cold cases that are over a hundred years old, but each one leaves you guessing. I enjoyed how they give you a little insight in the private lives of the characters, whether its meeting their show biz pooch to the hint of something sinister with the new guy. All in all, its a full rounded show with likable characters and a great story line.
I had never seen New Tricks before getting this DVD set to review, but let me tell you, once I got it I was so enthralled I watched the complete set in just a few days and while there are some minor references to previous seasons, each episode can be watched stand alone.
If you want to get a little crime drama, grab your copy of New Tricks, Season 9 from Acorn Media for only $39.99.
